Do You Need to File for A

Things to Do to get help at the Self-Service Center

READ THIS ENTIRE FORM

 Arrive early to get help at the Centers. The Courthouse opens at 8 am but many people line up outside the Courthouse much earlier than 8 am. We are open for one-on-one walk-in help on a first-come, first- served basis, Monday – Thursday. Self-help computers are available Mon – Fri.

 If you want to change a Court order the Court already made, you must bring a copy of your current Court order.

 If you are trying to finish your divorce case, bring a copy of all the papers in the Court file (not just the papers YOU have).

 For all other legal issues we may need to see all the papers in your case, if you have one. It is best to bring a copy of your entire Court file.

 To find out how to get a copy of your court papers, check with the Clerk’s office. They will look up your case number and tell you where your file is stored so you can go to that building and get copies. Note: Copies are 50¢ per page side.

 Bring your 2 months’ most recent pay stubs from your job, or any other proof of income you have (such as disability statements, unemployment paystubs, proof of AFDC/CalWorks).

 If you cannot read and write in English, please bring a friend or family member who can help you fill out your paperwork.

 We cannot help people who have attorneys. If you have an attorney but are no longer using them, please bring a written, filed court order (called a “Substitution of Attorney”) proving that you do not have an attorney now.

 Please make plans for someone to watch your children while we help you with your forms. The Children’s Waiting Room may be available to watch your child. Call them to find out about their rules and if they have space (408-882-2960) before you bring your children.

 There are legal issues we cannot help with... We may only learn this after you have come to us with your papers and we have a chance to look at them and interview you. For those issues you will be referred to a private attorney, legal services provider or the Law Library. For example, we do not do legal research about complicated legal issues, we do not create “custom” legal forms (pleadings) just for your case and we do not help with issues that are not heard in Superior Court.

IMPORTANT: The Staff does not represent you or give legal advice. We are only able to give you legal information.
