A Student’s Guide to Calculating the UC/CSU GPA

The UC and CSU calculate GPA in a very specific manner. The following will help guide you to calculate your own. Please note, however, that private schools and scholarships may use a different method to calculate GPA. To see which Galileo classes count toward fulfilling the A-G requirements, go to: https://doorways.ucop.edu/list/

1. Count only college preparatory classes. Count only classes taken during 10th and 11th grades. 2. Count summer school taken after 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. 3. All AP and some (not all) Honors courses receive an extra grade point. For example, an A in an AP class will count as 5 points, whereas an A in a non-AP class will count as 4 points. 4. Assign each semester grade a point. Here’s the point system: Regular classes AP and some Honors A 5 A 4 B 4 B 3 C 3 C 2 D 1 D 1 F 0 F 0

5. Ds and Fs in AP and those few Honors courses do not receive an extra grade point. 6. Add up the grade points. 7. Count the number of semesters of classes taken during 10th, 11th, and summers. 8. Divide the total grade point by the total number of semesters. For example: 72 grade points / 21 semester classes = 3.42
