As part of this unit of work you will be required to undertake an independent study on the topic you are studying. This booklet is designed for you to complete, on your own, to support your knowledge and understanding of this area of English.

How to use this booklet

 You must complete 6 tasks from the selection below.  Tasks can be completed on paper or using a PC.  Make sure that you complete all tasks with as much effort and detail as you possibly can, as you will be awarded an overall level/grade for your independent study.

 If you have any questions about this project, or need help with any of the tasks, ask for help as soon as you can. Do not wait until the due date.  Your completed homework should be submitted on the following date, in the form of a project:

Write a newspaper report which details the landing of a UFO in the local area. Make the report sound exciting by using carefully selected verbs, adjectives and adverbs.

Check your writing for spelling, punctuation and grammar when you have finished.

OptionOption Two:Two: SupernaturalSupernatural StoryStory

Write the opening paragraphs (max ½ page of A4) of a supernatural story. You may wish to research some ideas.

OptionOption Three:Three: TimeTime TravelTravel -- 11

Imagine it was possible to travel back in time. Which point in history would you choose? Write the text of a speech which explains why you have chosen this time period.

Try to write ½ a side of A4.

OptionOption Four:Four: TimeTime TravelTravel -- 22

Create a questionnaire and then interview two family members about which period in history they would like to visit if they could travel back in time. Write up the questionnaire showing the questions and answers.

OptionOption five:five: Sci-FiSci-Fi novelsnovels

Research and make a list of 10 Science Fiction novels for children. Choose one and read the opening chapter. Write a brief summary of what happens in the chapter (characters, events, settings).

Holidays to Mars will be available from Easter this year. You are putting together a brochure to tempt people to take a trip to Mars.

Research existing holiday brochures. Look at how they use layout, pictures and language to help make the holiday sound appealing.

Create a page for a new hotel that will be included in the brochure.

OptionOption 7:7: Sci-FiSci-Fi PosterPoster

Create a poster for the Science Fiction genre. It should show what conventions you would expect to find in these texts (films, books, poems etc). You may wish to give examples of texts which fit this genre.

OptionOption 8:8: BlastBlast Off!Off!

Write a dramatic account of a rocket taking off. This could be a section from a story (focus on thoughts, feelings) or a poem.
