What are the similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, and between differ- ent eukaryotic cells? 3. How do cell structures enable a cell to carry out basic life processes? 4. How do different cells in a multicellular organism contribute to the overall function of the organism? 5. How do cells within a multicellular organism communicate with each other? 6. Why aren’t all cells identical? 7. How do scientists study cellular structure and function? 8. How do organisms obtain the energy they need to survive?

By the end of this unit of study, you should be able to: 1. List the components of the cell theory and name the scientists and the discoveries they made that con- tributed to it. 2. Compare and contrast eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells based on size, structure and organism examples. 3. Explain how the cellular hierarchy found in a multicellular organism helps it to maintain homeostasis 4. Identify the cellular hierarchy found in a sample organism. 5. Compare and contrast the structure and functions of various organelles found in typical plant and animal cells. 6. Explain how cellular organelles work together to maintain homeostasis within a cell. 7. Propose analogies between cell parts and other systems such as a school or factory. 8. Give examples of the diversity of cell types and relate the structure of cells to their specialized function. 9. Translate a drawing of how cell transport and a cell’s endomembrane system work together to help a cell secrete certain products. 10. Illustrate and explain the roles of the cell organelles involved in the coding, production, refinement, sort- ing, packaging and transport of a secretory protein. 11. Distinguish between the types of proteins produced on bound and free ribosomes. 12. Explain how the structure of the mitochondria is related to its function in cell respiration. 13. Explain how the structure of the chloroplast is related to its function in photosynthesis. 14. Distinguish between different types of membrane proteins 15.
