2016 AORN Congress Student Program -- Understanding the OR Agenda Tuesday, April 5. 2016 9:30AM – 2:30 PM

8:00 – 9:00 AM Gathering, Opening Remarks, and Overview for the Day Susan D. Root, MSN, RN, CNOR

9:00 AM to 11:30 AM Hands-on Practice Session Students will proceed through the following stations: . Hand Hygiene . Gowning and gloving . Patient Positioning . Hair Removal . Prepping . Electrosurgery Equipment Demonstration . Endoscopic trainers

At the end of this session the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate proper hand hygiene. 2. Apply sterile gloves without contaminating them. 3. Demonstrate how to properly perform abdominal skin preps. 4. Describe the safety issues involved with electrosurgery. 5. Identify two safety issues related to positioning.

11:30 to 2:00 PM Exhibits and Lunch Students go the Exhibit Floor to visit vendors and complete an assignment.

At the end of this session the student will be able to:

1. Discuss the complexity of surgery by observing on the exhibit floor the vast number of supplies and equipment used. 2. Identify the role of the industry representative in providing safe care to patients by questioning the representative. 3. Describe different types of antimicrobial agents for hand scrub or patient skin preps. 4. Identify the equipment used to achieve sterilization by different methods. 5. Compare the characteristics of different types of gloves

2:00 to 2:30 PM Students return to Hands-on Room to turn in assignment and receive Certificates of Attendance.
