Why Ibicus Workshops?

In 2003, while working as an IB Diploma coordinator, Jill Rutherford realised that training for IB Diploma teachers was sporadic, yet most teachers who attended workshops gained inspiration and came back revitalised. Ibicus started small with a few teachers getting together to share their ideas and Kevin Brown made it all possible with his business and communication skills. Lesley Beckingham ([email protected]) is the Administration Manager for the company, handling all your practical requirements.

We work in full cooperation with the IBAEM in The Hague, ensuring quality and rigorous standards.

The workshops are intensive but productive, as experience and feedback tell us that this is the way most of you like them. Groups are often small so you have time to discuss your questions and most participants find that they leave the workshops with a network of new colleagues with whom they can continue sharing ideas.

We know that teachers work hard and hope that you leave our workshops with concrete ideas to put into practice, some hints and tips on teaching the courses, some new colleagues and having had an experience that is inspirational or uplifting as well as a good time.

We look forward to meeting you.

About King Edward’s School

In September 2010 King Edward’s School replaced A Levels with the International Baccalaureate Diploma for its Sixth Form provision. This change followed the school being authorised as an IB World School by the International Baccalaureate Organisation in December 2009. The International Baccalaureate was created in 1968 as an attempt to bring together the best elements of the British and European educational systems and it is now taught in 2,721 schools in 138 countries. In September 2009 there are 190 schools in this country teaching the IB Diploma and the number will continue to grow.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma embodies an entirely different educational philosophy. The A Level system tends towards specialisation whereas the IB Diploma has at its heart a more holistic approach. It believes in pupils experiencing a wider range of different subjects - boys will continue to study six subjects and must study English, Mathematics, a science, a language and a humanities subject. It is equally important that these subjects are bound together into a coherent whole through a common core. This common core is composed of a course on The Theory of Knowledge (ToK), an extended essay on any subject and the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) programme, whereby a student gets credit for extra-curricular activity. IB is, as they used to say, not so much a programme, more a way of life. Indeed, the IB says of itself in its Mission Statement: ‘ The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.’ There are several different reasons why the school feels that the IB Diploma is the right programme for Sixth Form study:

o IB is a coherent course with a clear purpose and philosophy, not just some subjects bolted together. This is emphasised by the Theory of Knowledge component at the heart of the system. o The continuation of more subjects enables a pupil to leave open the final decision about subject choice for university for longer. He is not driven down one channel too young. The problem for many of our boys is that they are forced too soon to give up things they enjoy. Also, at 16+ a boy may begin to be able to understand subjects that he may have thus far found difficult. After all, it is a time of growing intellectual and emotional maturity. o The course is linear, ending with examinations at the beginning of the last term of the Sixth Form. This allows teachers to teach as they want when they want and it allows pupils not to be continually oppressed, year upon year, by public exams. In many subjects, there is much greater freedom in specification and the questions are more open, allowing candidates greater freedom to show their ability.

o There is an emphasis on two things that this school particularly values, independent learning, through the Extended Essay, and action beyond the classroom, through the Creativity, Action, Service component. There is a strong sense that IB pupils are better prepared to cope with the nature of university life. o The international component makes it valuable for a school like ours with a 40% ethnic population, a very rich cultural diversity and wide opportunities in later life. It also makes it interesting for staff to be trained alongside teachers from other countries. o IB is free from government interference and grade inflation.

All of these reasons are of significance in trying to offer our pupils the best route into the future. However, an argument that has carried as much weight has come from the experiences many of our staff have had in visiting IB schools. In every IB school there is a sense of excitement and energy and enquiry. This school’s declared purpose is to provide:

‘ an educational experience that is the richest, most diverse, and most exciting possible in an atmosphere that provides support, encouragement and care for everyone, pupils and staff, here. We want our pupils to love coming here and to go from here prepared for all that human life has to offer.’

We strongly believe that the IB Diploma is the best way to do just that.

Why not offer A levels and IB?

We firmly believe that the IB Diploma is the right path for this school and all of its pupils for all of the reasons outlined above. By doing the IB Diploma, and only the IB Diploma, we will ensure that all of our efforts are directed towards its successful implementation. This means that every member of staff, and every element of the school will be dedicated to the IB Diploma. It won’t be a side-show or a minority provision. It will be what every pupil is studying, what every teacher will be teaching.

Getting to Birmingham and the school

BY TRAIN Birmingham is served by three major train stations. Most trains arrive at Birmingham New Street. In particular, there is a fast service to Birmingham from London Euston which goes every 30 minutes and takes approximately 90 minutes. A cheaper (but slower) option from London is to take the Chiltern Railways service from London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill. Taxis from either station will take 10 minutes or so to KES – but be warned, there is often a queue at Birmingham New Street.

Ibicus runs educational courses and does not own schools, transportation or accommodation.

Our Intention We are in business to provide the highest-quality teaching and training of IBDP-related subjects at competitive costs, at convenient times and locations.

Our Method For each subject workshop we advertise, we require a minimum number of registered and fully paid participants to make it viable. We try to put together events which make this happen and to make it work we need firm bookings for each subject on a course to ensure our costs are covered. When a course has had the minimum number of bookings paid in full, we can confirm that that course will run. Depending on the venue costs, this minimum number varies, but we will let you know when the course is confirmed to run as soon as we know ourselves. Naturally, we want to run all our courses, but sometimes it just isn't feasible. We only ever cancel as a last resort.

Our Agreement This is legally binding and governed by English Law once signed and accepted by us with your payment or booking form. If you apply electronically or by phone, it is binding in the same way. The completion of our online booking form, the raising of an invoice or pro-forma invoice indicates acceptance of your booking by Ibicus and your acceptance of these Terms and Conditions

Enrolment You agree to complete the online application form and arrange for full payment of our automatically generated invoice within 30 days of making the booking or sooner if the workshop commences before the 30 day deadline. We agree to provide you or your proposed teacher with tuition, refreshments (and accommodation, if residential) as described by venue in our website or email to schools.

Payment Payment can be made immediately online via credit card for which you will receive an automatic acknowledgement and receipt. Our payment terms are stated on our pro-forma invoice, and due amounts (if not paying online at the time of booking) must be paid on time and in full, and within 30 days of making the booking or sooner if the workshop commences before the 30 day deadline. Late payments attract an additional fee of £50. No participant will be permitted on to a workshop if we have not received full payment prior to their attendance. Please make sure you pay the bank charges for transferring money, so we receive the full due amount. All payments received will be acknowledged via an emailed receipt. Payment is available in GB Pounds Sterling for credit card bookings and bank transfers, or a choice of GB Pounds Sterling, Euros or US Dollars for bank transfers, nominated at the time of booking.

If we cancel any courses or part of a course, you are entitled to a full refund of all net payments received by us. You are therefore advised not to make non-refundable travel or accommodation arrangements until you have received our confirmation that the workshop is going ahead. Cancellation by you If you decide to cancel the booking or part of a booking for whatever reason BEFORE the workshop is confirmed, you must tell us in writing or by email to [email protected] Prior to confirmation of the workshop, your cancellation will not incur liability for any fees due.
