PARMANAND J. 12 DAWANI OF MARION COUNTY, FOUNDER OF HELPING 13 HANDS FREE MEDICAL CLINIC, FOR HIS 14 HUMANITARIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY, 15 AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN THE COMING 16 YEARS. 17 18 Whereas, it is altogether fitting that the South Carolina House of 19 Representatives should pause in its deliberations to commend Dr. 20 Parmanand J. Dawani of Mullins for the outstanding service he has 21 provided to the people of South Carolina; and 22 23 Whereas, a native of Pakistan, Dr. Dawani prepared for his life’s 24 work as a physician through studies at Fergusson College in Pune 25 and Dow Medical College in Karachi, earning a medical degree 26 from the latter in 1961; and 27 28 Whereas, in 1972 Dr. Dawani moved his family to the United 29 States, where he completed a residency in internal medicine in 30 1975; and 31 32 Whereas, after a tenure with the Veterans Administration Hospital 33 in Columbia from 1975 to 1978, Dr. Dawani and his family 34 relocated to Mullins, where he practiced internal medicine with 35 Advanced Medical Associates until his retirement in 2002; and 36 37 Whereas, upon retiring, Dr. Dawani founded Helping Hands Free 38 Medical Clinic in Marion County, realizing his dream of providing 39 basic primary medical care to the uninsured and underserved of 40 Marion County and its surrounding communities; and 41

[5374] 2 1 Whereas, Helping Hands Free Medical Clinic began with an all- 2 volunteer staff consisting of a physician, nurse, and an eligibility 3 coordinator. Today, the clinic has locations in Marion and Mullins, 4 and a staff consisting of a physician assistant, nurse, and 5 receptionist, as well as the continued volunteer services of Dr. 6 Dawani and many others; and 7 8 Whereas, although Dr. Dawani is most widely recognized as a 9 compassionate and skilled physician, he also is a devoted husband 10 to Champa Dawani, and together they are the proud parents of two 11 fine sons who followed Dr. Dawani’s footsteps to pursue careers in 12 medicine, Dr. Mahendra Dawani, an anesthesiologist, and Dr. 13 Surendra Dawani, an internist, and two wonderful daughters, Sarla 14 Dawani Morris and Sharmila Dawani Bali. They also are the proud 15 grandparents of three beloved grandchildren; and 16 17 Whereas, in his rare moments of leisure time, Dr. Dawani often 18 enjoys relaxing with a few rounds of bowling, preferably rolling 19 strikes, or at least spares; and 20 21 Whereas, it is fitting that the South Carolina House of 22 Representatives should pause in its deliberations to recognize and 23 celebrate the humble and generous contributions of Dr. Parmanand 24 J. Dawani to improving the health of the people of Marion County 25 and surrounding areas. Now, therefore, 26 27 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 28 29 That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of 30 South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Dr. 31 Parmanand J. Dawani of Marion County, distinguished physician 32 and founder of Helping Hands Free Medical Clinic, for his 33 humanitarian contributions to his community, and to wish him all 34 the best in the coming years. 35 36 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 37 Dr. Parmanand J.
