Digidol: Developing Digital Literacy Monthly Update November 2011

Introduction This monthly update document is intended for circulation amongst the Digidol Steering Group in order to maintain up to date awareness of project developments. Copies of all monthly reports will be uploaded to the project space in Teamplace. The workpackage document containing the detailed schedules of work, together with the project is also available in Teamplace. This report shows progress measured against the planned workpackages.

Workpackage 1: Project Start-up and Due: 31/12/11 Status: In Progress stakeholder engagement

 Project website/blog set up http://digidol.cardiff.ac.uk/  Teamplace workplace created and documents uploaded  Project email account set up [email protected].  Twitter account set up @DigidolProject  Project Manager recruited and started in post on 14th November 2011  Expectations agreed with JISC programme manager 16th November  Project Plan created and reviewed by project team , steering group and JISC programme manager.  Steering group set up and first meeting held 28th November 2011  Workpackage plan completed  Financial report created with support from INSERV Finance  Plan, Workpackages and Financial report to be sent to JISC by the end of this week.  Meeting held with Stephen Griffin from PALET and actions agreed including joining connections community, attending workshop and agreeing designated PALET contact.  Meeting held with Clare Kell from PCUTL on project engagement and areas of input  Project initiation forms A&B for INSRV programme board in progress.  Meeting held with the INSRV Information Literacy Group in which it was agreed that the group would expand its remit and work with the Digidol project. New name for the group was agreed as the Digital and Information Literacy Group

Workpackage 2: Baseline 1 Due: 31/01/12 Status: In Progress

Objective 1: Identify Digital Literacy behaviours, attitudes and provision for: academic staff and taught students (undergraduate and postgraduate)  Meeting set up and held with Sarah Richards from LEAN on 17th November to discuss use of lean data for baseline  Approach discussed with Helen Beetham (JISC Advisor on Baselining methodology)  Ongoing identification and gathering of data sources and documentation that detail existing strategy, policy, practices across the university, including reviews and surveys.  Arrangements made for interviews with teaching staff from each School. As of 30th Nov interviews completed for 11 Schools, five more so far confirmed.  Arrangements to be confirmed with Sam Reid to set up a focus group with student representatives before Xmas.  The development of a Digital Literacy focus model is in progress. Draft to be distributed before Xmas.

Objective 2: Identify Digital Literacy behaviours, attitudes and provision for: researchers, admin and support staff.

Workpackage 4: Strategic Alignment Due: 31/05/12 Status: In Progress

Objective 3: To analyse and review the University’s new strategies in order to identify key areas of value which Digidol can support. To work with schools and departments in order to feed into action plans addressing strategic change. Providing appropriate direction and opportunity for embedding Digital Literacy, enabling practices into existing processes.

 Meeting arranged with Christine Stewart and Sarah Richards to develop working with Lean on 13th December.  Meeting arranged to plan the Digital and Information Literacy Strategy on 15th December  The Digidol team have joined the Digital Media Task and Finish Group ( although the first steering group meeting clashed with the last meeting so a representative from the D&IL group kindly stepped in to represent the group)  Joy attended INSRV Education Strategy Action Plan meeting on 14th November and is feeding into response. Objective 4 : To establish ‘As Is’ (current) and ‘To Be’ (exemplar) end to end organisational models for digital literacy provision,

Workpackage 6: Facilitating Change Due: 31/09/12 Status: Pending

Objective 5 : Conduct a gap analysis and change management approach for embedding Digital Literacy into all staff development courses and academic programmes of study for staff and students. Plan the transfer of the organisational model to the strategic areas of Research and Innovation & Engagement.

Workpackage 7: Resource Bank Due: 31/01/13 Status: Pending

Objective 6 : To collate / develop an open resource bank of learning activities that addresses the full spectrum of learning literacies, including Digital Literacies. Establish a Methodology and curriculum for digital literacy provision.

Objective 7: To provide workshops for staff in order to raise awareness and confidence in the use of digital technology in academic and service provision. Directly enabling digital literacy development for staff who will in turn cascade to students.

Workpackage 9: Dissemination and Due: 31/03/12 Status: In Progress Engagement

Objective 8: To engage the community in the developing project and to disseminate the project outputs and outcomes widely  Press release written and sent to INSRV communications for the INSRV annual report and to the steering group for wider dissemination  Press release written for and send to the Welsh Government Digital Wales project report  Abstract written and sent in LILAC ( Librarians Information Literacy Annual Conference) to present a paper at the conference in April  Abstract written and sent in for the ALDinHE Annual Conference on the theme of "Learning Development in a Digital Age: emerging literacies and learning spaces"  Dissemination group scoped and planned  Joe and Cathie attended the developing digital literacies workshop in Swansea on the 4th November  Joe presented an initial project pitch to the digital literacy programme in Birmingham on 4th October 2011  Joe and Joy attended various sessions from the JISC innovating e-learning Elluminate conference November 22-25th.  Paper confirmed ‘Making the Connection: the value of Digital Literacy’ to be presented at Social Connections conference 9th December 2011 - http://socialconnections.info/  Paper confirmed “What does social media mean for IT Services?” to be presented at UCISA meeting Using Social Media to Communicate, 18th January 2012 –- http://www.ucisa.ac.uk/en/groups/ssg/cg/Events/2012/socialmedia/Abstracts.aspx

Workpackage 10: Management and Quality Assurance Due: 31/07/13 Status: In Progress

 Project Manager recruited and in post 14th November  Steering group appointed 18th November  Initial Steering Group meeting held 28th November  Project Management process and Quality Assurance processes initially defined as part of the start up phase ( see workpackage 1) and outlined in the project plan  Project Plan reviewed by steering group, project team and JISC programme manager,  Plan to be finalised and posted on the JISC website by the end of the week.  Meeting with the project’s JISC appointed critical friend arranged for 12th December

Workpackage 11: Embedding & Sustainability Due: 31/07/13 Status: Pending

 Sustainability Plan defined as part of the Project Plan in Start Up phase ( see workpackage 1) Digidol’s expected month by month focus based on JISC timelines is illustrated below. We are currently in month 4, therefore activity is focused on workpackages 1, 2 and 10.
