7th Grade Course Descriptions

Overview – At McPherson Middle School, 7th Grade students are enrolled in five (5) core classes, select two (2) elective courses each semester, and have a Core Advisory class to end the school day.

Core Course Descriptions

Grammar & Composition  Grammar & Composition II – In this course students will improve their writing, spelling, and grammar skills.  Pre-AP Grammar & Composition II – This challenging course requires a self-motivated student who wants to improve his/her writing, spelling and grammar skills through enrichment.

Literature  Literature 7 – This course will include literature, vocabulary and critical reading and thinking skills.  Pre-AP Literature 7 – This course will challenge the self–motivated reader with literature, vocabulary and critical thinking skills. Mathematics  Mathematics I – This introductory math class focuses on the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions with a problem solving emphasis. In addition, exponents, probability, basic geometry, area and volume are introduced. This math class is for students needing a deeper understanding of mathematics in their transition to middle school.  Mathematics II – Students in this course review basic operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, ratios, percents, geometry, measurement, and properties. Students are also introduced to integers, equations, and expressions. Topics presented are emphasized through problem solving. Students need to be self motivated with a good work ethic.  Pre-Algebra – Areas stressed are computations and equations involving the real number system. This is a Mastery class in which students are expected to meet mastery requirements for the district. This is a pre-requisite course for Algebra. The student needs to be a good achiever and highly motivated.

Social Studies  Social Studies 7 – Students study world geography including the physical, cultural, and environmental aspects of the continents. A twelve-week study of Kansas provides an overview of famous people, important events, history, and geography of our state. Current events are incorporated through the use of the CNN “Newsroom” program.  Pre-AP Social Studies 7 – Requires more reading, writing, research, work outside class, and higher level thinking skills.

Science 7 – A general science class with an emphasis on life science and health.

Pre-AP Courses – Pre-AP courses are offered at McPherson Middle School for students who show strength or an interest in specific curricular areas. Students planning to attend a post- secondary school after high school should consider taking at least one Pre-AP course during middle school. Students enrolling in Pre-AP courses should exhibit a strong work ethic and a desire to learn.

Elective Course Descriptions

Art I (1 Semester) – Students will continue the exploration of the elements and principles of art with emphasis on creativity, originality and development of art skills. There will be additional instruction of new media, 3- dimensionality and art history.

Art II (1 Semester) – The prerequisite for this class is the proficient completion of Art I. This class will enable the serious art student to further explore visual art at an advanced level. Exemplary effort and attitude will be required.

Computer Applications I (1 Semester) – Students will learn file management skills including how to hand in work and pick up instructions electronically. Students will review keyboarding and develop word processing and desktop publishing skills using Microsoft Office. Students experience working with PowerPoint. Grading is project based. All work will be done in class. There will be no tests and no homework. Computer Applications II (1 Semester) – Students review keyboarding and word-processing. They will then practice internet research. Students develop spreadsheet skills using higher-level math formulas, review PowerPoint and begin working with imovie. Other software packages and devices will be introduced as they are explored, discovered and purchased. Grading is project based. All work will be done in class. There will be no tests and no homework. Students must have passed a full semester of Computer Applications I to enroll in this class.

Physical Education 7/8 (1 Semester) – The basic concept of physical education is the development of the total person; physically, socially, and emotionally. This is achieved through team games, individual games, and skill development. Various activities are used to develop traits of self-confidence, sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility, and the aesthetic appreciation of grace and movement. Grading is done in three main areas: daily work, skill improvement, and written work.

Technology Explorations I (1 Semester) – The purpose of Technology Explorations course is to give students an opportunity to explore many subjects in the content areas of technology, family & consumer science, and science. Students work in a module for seven sessions, learning about a module topic using various types of technology. Some of module topics available are: Applied Physics, Audio Broadcasting, Breakfast Nutrition, Creative Problem Solving, Electronics, Engineering Bridges, Forensic Science, Interior Design, Flight Technology, Robots, Rocketry & Space and Weather. Students can expect to explore 8 different modules within the semester.

Technology Explorations II (1 semester) – The concept behind the Technology Explorations II class is to give those students who enjoy working on their own, with guidance from computer software and the instructors, a chance to explore more module content than what they previously have. Hands-on projects, built by teams of students, will also be incorporated to enhance the problem solving skills of the students. Prerequisite: Technology Explorations I

Band II (Full Year) – This class is for the band student with a minimum of one year playing experience. The course involves playing a musical instrument as part of a large group. Emphasis will be placed on playing techniques (i.e.-tone, balance, intonation, interpretation, theory and performance). Several evening performances are required for this class. Other performances will include contests, solo festivals and small ensemble opportunities. Students are responsible for securing an instrument and method book for the year. Instruments may be purchased or rented from a local music store. Prerequisite: One year of experience playing a band instrument or consent of the instructor.

Jazz Band (Full Year) – Jazz band is an advanced performance group for the student with at least one year of playing experience. The course involves playing a musical instrument as part of a jazz ensemble. Several evening performances are required for the class. An emphasis will be placed upon playing, listening to, and evaluating different styles of jazz music. Simultaneous enrollment in a fundamental performing ensemble is required. Students are responsible for securing an instrument for the year. All music and materials will be provided. An audition/skills test is required before enrollment. Prerequisite: One year of experience playing an instrument, and consent of the instructor. Vocal Music 7 – This course is designed to further develop the basic fundamentals of music gained in 6th grade. Students will learn to work in a group while developing their personal singing voice. This class is aimed toward developing student confidence and team work skills by facing musical challenges head on. Students will have numerous opportunities to perform through concerts and music festivals.

Strings II – This course continues to focus on developing technique and note-reading skills. More concert opportunities are given including contest. Various styles of music are introduced.

8th Hour Course Descriptions

Band I (Full Year) – This class is for the beginning band student with no experience playing an instrument. Instruction is given on playing techniques, music fundamentals and instrument care. Students are responsible for securing an instrument and method book for the year. Instruments may be purchased or rented from a local music store. Prerequisite: None.

Core Advisory 7 (Full Year) – This developmentally appropriate course will focus on study skills, citizenship preparedness, career exploration and academic monitoring.
