Safety Net program

The Equity and Diversity Committee is a standing committee of the Saddleback College Academic Senate that is comprised of faculty from multiple disciplines across campus. The committee recently met to address how faculty can support all students in our community during this time of uncertainty regarding national policy pertaining to the international travel of different immigrant groups to and from the United States. This committee holds that the great diversity of our student body in nationality, race, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious beliefs and more enriches our academic environment and is an asset to our campus community. To this end, the Equity and Diversity Committee has resolved to implement the Safety Net program to create a safe atmosphere for all students on campus to freely express their own views and learn of campus resources available to help them deal with any potential related concerns, distress, or apprehension that they may feel. The Safety Net program consists of a network of faculty across campus who have individually pledged to designate their office as a safe space for the above types of open dialogue and to serve as a resource to all students. Look for the Safety Net symbols that portray overlapping human figures outlines who share one heart and are atop a globe, symbolizing the similarities of all people in our global society and emphasizing the strength of openness and empathy over discrimination. This meaningful symbol will be posted on many instructors' office doors and other locations on campus to signify Safety Net safe zones available to any and all students.
