In this study, scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) specimens extracted from Hun- garian Natural History Museum soil samples (2970 samples in total), all of which were collected using soil and litter sampling devices, and extracted by Berlese funnel, were examined. From these samples, 43 scale insect species (Acanthococcidae 4, Coccidae 2, Micrococcidae 1, Ortheziidae 7, Pseudococcidae 21, Putoidae 1 and Rhizoecidae 7) were found in 16 European countries. Abstract The mealybugs form the second largest family group within the scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha), with about 2,300 species in almost 300 genera, and is currently considered to include two families, Pseudococcidae and Rhizoecidae. D.A. Downie & P.J. Gullan undertook the first molecular phylogenetic study of the group, and recognised three major clades which more or less equated to the Pseudococcinae, Phenacoccinae and Rhizoecinae. More recently, N.B Hardy and co-workers did a similar large study with more taxa, and included a morphological data matrix based on the adult female, adult males and first-instar nymphs; their results were broadly similar to those of Downie & Gullan except they found that the Rhizoecinae were included within the Phenacoccinae. Since this latter study, the Rhizoecinae has been recognized as a separate family, Rhizoecidae, and is used as an outgroup in this study. -

However, using a recently developed primer set, we recovered barcode records from 373 specimens, providing coverage for 75 species from 31 genera in two families. Overall success was >90% for mealybugs and >80% for armored scale species. The G·C content was very low in most species, averaging just 16.3%. Sequence divergences (K2P) between congeneric species averaged 10.7%, while intra-specific divergences averaged 0.97%. However, the latter value was inflated by high intra- specific divergence in nine taxa, cases that may indicate species overlooked by current taxonomic treatments. Our study establishes the feasibility of developing a comprehensive barcode library for scale insects and indicates that its construction will both create an effective system for identifying scale insects and reveal taxonomic situations worthy of deeper analysis. -

The data provided here are based on literature records and include the latest taxonomic and nomenclatural changes and updates on Coccomor- pha reported in Poland. Changes in comparison with ScaleNet and Fauna Europaea electronic databases are also discussed. A total of 185 species belonging to 98 genera and 16 families are included in the list. Of this group, 47 species are alien introduced species and live only indoors, and one species, Pulvinaria floccifera (Westwood), develops both indoors and outdoors. Faunistic research conducted in Poland for over 80 years has led to the discovery of 143 species of scale insects that live in the natural environment. The state of knowledge of the coccoid fauna of individual areas is uneven, however, 83 species of scale insects from 8 families were collected in Upper Silesia (Górny Śląsk). Upper Silesia is the region in Poland with the fourth-largest number of species; it is preceded by the Kraków-Wieluń Upland (94 species), Roztocze (88) and the Świętokrzyskie Mts. (86). Two of the species collected in this area – Trionymus hamberdi and Volvicoccus stipae – are known only from this region. The paper gives a list of scale insect species collected in Upper Silesia together with information on their localities. KEY WORDS: scale insects, Hemiptera, Coccoidea, Upper Silesia. INTRODUCTION Scale insects (coccoids) belong to the superfamily Coccoidea, suborder Sternorrhyncha and order Hemiptera. The world fauna of these plant feeding insects includes nearly 8 000 species (GULLAN & MARTIN 2009). 143 scale insect species occurring in the natural environment have been recorded in Poland (ŁAGOWSKA 2004). Although faunistic research in our country has been carried out for over 80 years, the level of knowledge on the scale insect fauna of Poland’s individual regions is still uneven. -
