Description of Workshop:
8:30am – 11:45 am- Mike McMillion This will be an extensive opportunity for participants to use fingerspelling in a dynamic role-play situation. The instructor will use various real-life scenarios that are full of information that will be appropriate for fingerspelling. Both receptive and expressive situations will be incorporated. Participants will be expected to get involved with the role-play scenarios and both give and receive feedback from fellow participants and the instructor.
1:00 pm – 3:15 pm Carlos Santos-Cuyugan The afternoon session will guide participants in both recognizing and incorporating non-verbal communication as you speak. Participants will gain information about body language, tone of voice, and general tips for addressing others professionally. This session will include lecture, demonstration and participation
3:15-4:00 Question and Answer/Session Wrap-up Mike McMillion and Carlos Santos-Cuyugan This will be your opportunity to ask questions related to either session and in general related to Interpreting and Non-Verbal Communication/Public Speaking.
Who is Mike McMillion? Mike McMillion is a certified Sign Language interpreter (Texas BEI Level IV and Court; RID Certificate of Interpretation and Certificate of Transliteration) working as a video interpreter (VI) for Sorenson Video Relay and was formerly the Communication Specialist for the Corsicana Regional Day School Program for the Deaf. He taught at the High School level and was providing Deaf education services for the district. Mike is a mentor to other interpreters and has presented seminars and training workshops statewide and has conducted seminars in several countries. He is a member of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators, the National Association of the Deaf and the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf. He has been a member of the American Sign Language Teachers Association. Mike is a licensed EMT and volunteer firefighter. He is a member of the United Response Search and Rescue team.
Who is Carlos Santos-Cuyugan?
Carlos Santos-Cuyugen received his Master’s degree in Speech Communication from the University of Philippines and has been teaching Speech Communication classes since 1988. He has presented various workshops in the United States and the Philippines. Carlos was employed as a Lecturer at the University of California in Los Angeles and as an adjunct faculty member at the Dallas County Community College District. Description of the Workshop:
Through role-play and active participation this will be a practical workshop applying rules, regulations, and the ethics of working as a team member in a multi-cultural hospital environment. Participants will self assess if hospital interpreting is for them, and working interpreters will network with names of people who coordinate and refer multi-lingual interpreting services for hospitals in the Dallas area.
Who is Suzanne Terrio?
Graduated New York University in 1978, MA in Deaf Education. She received her Ed.M. from Columbia University Teachers College in 1985.

P/T Interpreter for Sign Language Resources in New York State 1985-1998 Community, Legal, Medical, Educational, Theatrical, Corporate, Political, Interpreter under the Connecticut Commission on the Deaf 1986 - present: Comprehensive Skills Certificate, National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Westchester's Broadway Theatre in New York, interpreted musical plays Westchester's Cable T.V. interpreter Visited the Manila School for the Deaf in Sweden; Nassau Center f/t Deaf in the Bahamas Winner of Channel 13 Award for the Utilization of Television in Education of Deaf Children Worked with Bernard Bragg and Phyllis Frelich in Wallingford, Conn., for the NTD Summer Script Work in Progress Worked with Huberta Schroedel, Director of the New York Center for Law &the Deaf- Sign to voice; Voice to Sign Interp. Relocated to Texas in 1998 due to her Deaf husband's relocation with GTE/Verizon 1998 to Present: Interpreter for University of North Texas, Denton; Adjunct faculty at TWU and Associate faculty at CCCC; ASL Instructor for Denton Ryan High School.
These workshops are hosted by Collin County Community College American Sign Language and Interpreter Preparation Program and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, RSA Region IV Interpreter Education Project, Grant # H160A00003. RID, ACET, and DARS ODHHS BEI CEUs are pending. These workshops are accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
