Dr. Gore reviewed the minutes from the June 8, 2010 MBE/EDGE Committee meeting.

Dr. Gore asked committee members if they had received the Catalyst Newsletter through their email. Ms. Mominee stated that she had contacted the UT Communications department to have the mailing list updated, and that all committee members should now receive the newsletter. Dr. Gore asked the committee that if they had any ideas for content, to let her know so that she could pass those ideas to Mr. Jon Strunk, UT Media Relations Manager.

Dr Gore stated that Mr. Burns could not attend this meeting, but that he would present the brand platform for the City of Toledo at a future meeting.

Dr. Gore thanked the committee for attending and supporting the Center for Biosphere Restoration Research Outreach Event on June 30. Dr. Gore stated the Construction Reform Project was one of three in Ohio with a budget of $7.8 million and a 15% MBE/EDGE margin to meet or exceed. Dr. Gore also added that the MBDC is providing space for the construction reform project leaders from the state. Action Item: Dr. Gore will update the committee at the August meeting with progress from the State taking space in the MBDC.

Page 1 of 3 Dr. Gore asked Mr. Wood to give his presentation regarding the Minority Trucking Consortium. Mr. Wood gave a presentation on the Minority Business Assistance Program (MBAP), formerly known as the Minority Contractors Business Assistance Program (MCBAP).

Mr. Wood explained that the name had been changed because local companies were under the impression that MCBAP only worked with contractors.

Mr. Wood explained that MBAP began by linking many small trucking companies together so that they could bid on and win larger trucking contracts. Mr. Wood added that MBAP mentors these small companies and shows them the most effective ways to bid and earn business while maintaining a company.

Mr. Wood stated that MBAP only works with companies that are registered in Ohio, properly insured, have the correct permits, and only employ drivers with Commercial Drivers Licenses.

Dr. Gore asked how MBAP will select which company or companies will be hired when a job is not big enough for all of them to work. Mr. Wood explained that MBAP has an oversight committee that selects which companies will work based on seniority and certification, and that the companies will take turns on which one will be the lead on the project.

Dr. Gore asked Mr. Johnson to provide an update on the Minority Contractors Lending Program (MCLP).

Mr. Johnson stated that he had recently met with Mr. Thomas Winston, the Finance Director for the Port Authority, who is helping assemble the qualifications for businesses seeking to be involved with the MCLP. Mr. Johnson added that a larger meeting was planned for Friday, July 16. Mr. Johnson stated that bonding was still an issue to be resolved. Ms. Reichert-Kral asked Mr. Johnson if they had looked into SBA Bonding and stated that she would email him the contact information. Action Item: Mr. Johnson or Mr. Toth will update the committee at the August meeting regarding the July 16 MCLP meeting.

Ms. Skutch reminded the committee about the College of Business and Center for Family & Privately-Held Business lunch outreach event for the MBDC and the MBE/EDGE Committee, to be held July 20 at noon in Stranahan Hall South room 2032.

Dr. Gore urged members to attend and thanked the College of Business for their support of the MBDC. Dr. Gore also thanked Ms. Skutch for her work in planning the July 20 event.

Mr. Johnson stated that the University should put together a schedule of events, seminars, and workshops that the different colleges sponsor so that it is convenient to see what resources are being offered to the MBE/EDGE community.

Page 2 of 3 Mr. Parker stated that a Leadership Symposium is being held on Friday, October 1 from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and a golf outing is being held during the day on Saturday, October 2. Mr. Parker asked that members contact him with any questions. Mr. Parker’s email address is [email protected].

Ms. Reichert-Kral stated that the MBDC won grant money from the Edison Incubation Program, and would be hiring a part-time employee to work in the MBDC, as Manager of the MBDC. She added that the employee would report to Dr. Gore and herself with the purpose of helping bridge any gaps between the MBDC tenants and the University. Ms. Reichert-Kral stated that the part- time employee would be making $25,000 per year including benefits at 20 hours per week.

Both Dr. Gore and Ms. Reichert-Kral urged members to refer individuals to the job opportunity once it is available.

Ms. Reichert-Kral stated that a full-time employee would also be hired for the Nitschke Technology Commercialization Complex (NTCC) as Manager of the NTCC. She added that it was her goal to have these positions posted in a few weeks. Ms. Reichert-Kral stated that the full-time position would be making $50,000 per year including benefits at 40 hours per week.
