By completing this task students will be able to:
Investigate occupational entry level requirements. Categorise employment according to entry level requirements. Practice career research skills.
Preparation and Materials
Copies of Activity Sheet (1) and (2) “Entry Levels To Employment” for each student. Copies of Activity Sheet (3) “Entry Levels To Employment” for each student. Teachers’ Notes for reference. You will need to have some familiarity with levels of qualifications and with resources in the (careers) library. Students need access to careers information resources. A careers advisor could provide support for this lesson. This lesson has links to lesson plan lifelong learning.
Method
1. Put the students into groups of 3 to 4. 2. Explain the aims of the lesson using the learning outcomes on Activity Sheet (1). 3. Ask the students with qualifications they have come across , through siblings, friends, own experience etc. 4. Give out Activity Sheets (1) and (2). Explain that we can catergorise jobs by entry level. In their groups, ask students to try to sort the jobs list into 4 categories, drawing on their own knowledge, parents’ jobs or just by guessing. 5. Ask the groups to feed back their answers and discuss the responses – differences in groups’ opinions, whether particular subjects might be required or if other entry requirements exist (health etc.). 6. Give out the correct answers (remembering to mention that there are exceptions and students may know of some). 7. Give out Activity Sheet (3) and ask students individually to choose a career of interests and research the entry level using the Careers Library Resources. 8. Ask the students what they have learned from the lesson. 9. Summarise the main learning outcomes. TEACHERS’ NOTES – Entry Level To Employment

Professional Technician High School diploma and CGEP or High School diploma in specific subjects vocational college plus university/higher and possibly related CGEP/vocational qualifications college course.
Craft Operative/Semi Skilled High School diploma in relevant areas Qualifications useful but not essential and vocational college course in specific you my be given some in house training or area put on courses
