UIC COLLEGE OF EDUCATION - OFFICE OF RESEARCH Support For Proposal Development Proposal Incentive Fund (PIF) Request
The Office of Research within the College of Education will provide funds to enable a faculty member to prepare a strong proposal for extramural funding. Funds can be used for a course buyout, student support, travel to meet with a collaborator, etc. Up to four proposals within the college will be awarded funds each academic year, contingent upon budget allocation and proposal quality. To apply for these funds, please follow the steps below.
1. Consult with COE Office of Research to identify a suitable funding opportunity consistent with the College’s current research agenda. Federal funding opportunities are preferred or private or state opportunities which provide for recovery of administrative or indirect costs.
2. Requests should be prepared far enough in advance to allow sufficient time to develop a thoughtful and high quality proposal. This may involve reviewing funded proposals, discussion with experts in areas that will support the proposed activity such as development of evaluation and outcomes of proposals. Normally a period of between 3-6 months is required for a careful development of an idea for a competitive proposal.
3. Consult with the department chair to determine if the support requested may be appropriate for the period requested (i.e., can the teaching schedule be adjusted to provide for the necessary course release) and if the proposal identified is complementary to goals for faculty development such as promotion and tenure or advances an area of the department’s mission.
4. Prepare the attached form with the following information:
a. Identification of an appropriate funding opportunity;
b. Due dates for letter of intent, preliminary proposals, and full submission;
c. Brief description of your proposed project;
d. Amount and description of requested support;
e. Time period for requested support;
f. Any other college or university time commitments that you have during the period of your requested support.
5. Forward your request form to your chair for their recommendations.
6. Upon review and with the recommendation of the chair, the Associate Dean for Research will make an award of funds to the applicant’s home department.
7. Acceptance of the funding obligates the faculty member to submit the proposal. If the faculty member does not submit the proposal he/she will be required to make arrangements with the department chair (or dean if the chair receives funding) to compensate the College by executing additional duties commensurate with the expended funds in the ensuing semester. For example, if funds are awarded to cover a course buyout in the fall semester, failure to submit the proposal will result in teaching an additional course during one of the upcoming semesters.
8. A faculty member may receive incentive funds from the COE Office of Research once every three years as long as obligations from previous incentive awards are upheld.
Funding will be up to $5000. Items that may be requested are (1) adjunct funding to provide for a course buyout or modification of a work assignment to allow for time to develop a proposal, (2) GA/student assistance, (3) travel to a required conference/workshop or to acquire specialized training (i.e. equipment operation) required for a competitive proposal, and (4) costs to work with off campus collaborators or mentors with expertise and/or funding success in a related program.
Items that are not funded are (1) extra compensation for work over and above a current work assignment and (2) costs that are unallowable from state expenditures (e.g., food for events attended by University employees only).
Requests are reviewed on a continuous basis. Please contact the Office of Research for more information and assistance.
