B4 Three questions for “The Necklace”

1)

Matilda’s character is very unappreciative of what she has. First, when she is invited to a party she wants a new, expensive dress, otherwise she won’t go. Her husband doesn’t really have the money for it but he squeezes in some money just to make his wife happy. Matilda doesn’t see how hard Pierre is trying to get the best for her.” In truth, I am ashamed. I haven’t any jewelry. My husband means well, but he’s merely a clerk,” (13).she puts her husband in a low place while her husband puts her as the queen of the world. Matilda always wants more in life. No matter how much she has she will be selfish and try to get more and more.

On the contrary, Matilda’s husband Pierre Loisel is a man that is very loving. He wants the best for his loved one and will do mostly anything to make her joyous. “We had so little money to spare for luxuries. But her sadness was too much to bear,” (12). He even offers to put on Matilda’s jacket for her because it was freezing outside but she said her jacket was too old for anyone to see.

2) This story takes place around the 1870’s in Paris and back then fashion was a big thing. Having a very expensive dress would prove that you are rich and in a high class. If Matilda was in a place where fashion was not part of your daily life then she would not want all of the expensive items. If they were invited to a party that was not that high class then maybe Matilda would have not had the necklace and without the necklace then they would have no debt to pay. Matilda is the kind of person who buys more than what she needs; so if there is no fashion and no trends then she would have no reason to buy all of the things. The character acts in different ways based on the environment around them.

3)

Irony is the opposite of what you would except to happen. In the story “The Necklace” Matilda borrows a necklace she believes is made out of pure diamonds. She lost it so she and her husband spend 10 years of their life trying to repay the amount of the replacement necklace. The irony is that the necklace was fake so it was only worth 500 francs (about 1,200 USD) and these people spent a big chunk of their lives trying to pay for a 34,000 francs necklace.
