Honors Humanities Class Schedule 10/26-10/30

Reminders:  The map quiz over South Asia will be on Friday, 10/30.  Don’t forget to review vocabulary.

Monday 10/26: Topic: Indo-Aryan Migration Reading in Text:  Chapter 3.1 first read pages 61-62 you may stop at “The Hittite Empire”—this reading is a short overview of the Indo-European migrations—you read this with the Hittites, but it’s a good review of the Indo-Europeans  then read pages 63-67 (you should start reading at “Aryans Transform India” on pages 63 and stop at “New Religions Arise”).  Below are the questions you should do your best to answer when you read about each including Hinduism. Describe sacred literature of the Hindus. o Discuss the social structure that developed in India following the Aryan migration. o What kind of religion was practiced? (theist (mono or poly), ethical, or animist) o How did it originate? What was the time and place of founding? o What are the beliefs of the religion?

Tuesday 10/27: Topic: What are the beliefs and practices of Hinduism? Reading from Handout found on the blog: “Life, Death, and the Gods on Aryan India”  Answer the Questions for Analysis in the middle of each section. You should be able to reference specific examples and illustrations from the text. o Be prepared to DISCUSS the primary source excerpts from the Rig-Veda in class today (pages 1-3, stop at “the Emergence of Brahminical Hinduism” and answer the questions for analysis on page 1) —ignore questions that ask you to compare to another document you haven’t been given

Wednesday 10/28: Topic: What are the beliefs and practices of Hinduism? Reading from Handout found on the blog: “Life, Death, and the Gods on Aryan India”  Answer the Questions for Analysis in the middle of each section. You should be able to reference specific examples and illustrations from the text. o Be prepared to DISCUSS the primary source excerpts from the Upanishads in class today (pages 3-5, start at “the Emergence of Brahminical Hinduism” stop at “Dharma the Imperative of Caste Law”, and answer the questions on page 4.—ignore questions that ask you to compare to another document you haven’t been given
