Combining Season

Combining Season By: Brielle Mears

It was a crisp, cool morning. At last, the perfect South Dakota combining weather. We had a long day ahead of us, but when you have the perfect weather, the perfect crop, and the perfect combine, it can be a lot of fun.

When we got to the cornfield the combine was all ready to go. It was surely going to take us almost all day; we tried to work hard and fast. Suddenly, we heard a sound; it was the sound of pheasants. Living in South Dakota, pheasants weren’t unusual to come by, but we were in for a surprise. The combine continued as the sound of the pheasants grew louder. We stopped the combine, and looked; there was no sign of a single pheasant. So, we continued to combine, then all of a sudden, out of nowhere about thirty pheasants flew up, out, and above the uncombined cornstalks. The sight of the feathered beauties was unimaginable. The combine was stopped as we sat and watched in amazement. A couple of minutes past and they were gone. Just like that. It was almost as if they had vanished out of thin air. They were gone.
