Instructor: Elizabeth Stelley Class meets: Language Building Room 113, MW from 2:00 to 3:20 Office: General Academic Building Room 401A Office Hours: TR, 1:30 to 3:30, or by appointment (email me) Email: [email protected] Class Website: http://www.math.unt.edu/~ems0106/ Text: College Algebra (Fourth Edition) by Blitzer AND College Algebra Workbook by Grether and Obeid Final Examination Date and Time: Tuesday, May 8 from 4:00 to 6:00.

Course Description: College Algebra, 1100, 3 credit hours: Quadratic equations, systems involving quadratics, variation, ratio and proportion, progressions, the binomial theorem, inequalities, complex numbers, theory of equations, determinants, partial fractions, exponentials and logarithms. Prerequisite(s): two years of high school algebra and one year of geometry, and consent of the department. A grade C or better in MATH 1100 is required when MATH 1100 is a prerequisite for other mathematics courses.

Prerequisites: A passing grade in MATH 1010 or a valid “Permit for Math Enrollment” form. See prerequisite verification procedure attached to this handout. Note that test scores on the math department placement test are only valid for one year from the test date.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is required for this course. I will allow for a total of 3 unexcused absences. For each unexcused absence after that, I will deduct 2 points from your total grade at the end of the class. For clarity, an unexcused absence is defined to be missing any part or portion of a regularly scheduled class meeting. This means that being tardy also counts as an absence.

At the beginning of class each day I will pass around a roll sheet. As soon as everyone is done signing in I will take it back up. So if you don’t make it to class by that time, you are officially absent in my book. However, I don’t want you to get the mindset that if you are running late you should just skip class. Coming to class regularly is the key to passing this class.

Calculator Policy: On the final exam, you will be allowed to use any calculator that does not have a Computer Algebra System (CAS). Under this policy, most calculators will be allowed. Examples of some commonly used calculators that will be allowed include: TI-83, TI-84, TI-85 and the TI-86, as well as virtually all non-graphing calculators. Examples of calculators that are not allowed: TI-89, TI-92, HP-48 or any others that are capable of symbolic algebra. If you are unsure whether or not your calculator is acceptable, make sure you clear it up with me before the first exam.

Grading Policy:

Breakdown: Percentage:

Homework ---- 15%

Exam 1 ---- 20%

Exam 2 ---- 20%

Exam 3 ---- 20%

Final Exam ---- 25%

Homework Policy: Homework will be assigned every class day. Homework will always be due exactly one week from the day it is assigned. Homework is to be turned in on my desk (in the classroom) before class starts on the day it is due. If the homework has not been turned in by the beginning of class on the due date, it will be considered late. I will not accept late homework, period. I will, however, be happy to accept homework early if you know that you will not be able to make it to class. I am going to drop a few of the lowest assignments, so this will cover you being absent. The number of assignments I drop will depend on the total number of assignments at the end of the semester.

1) Homework should be clean and written as neat as possible. 2) Please treat each section as a separate homework assignment. Even if I assign multiple sections in class, please separate them. 3) You must staple your pages together in the top left hand corner. If you do not staple your homework, it will not be accepted. 4) Your name, along with your section number should be at the top of the first page. 5) The homework must be done in the order assigned. It is not the grader’s responsibility to look through your homework just to find one specific problem. 6) If the grader cannot read your writing, your homework will not be graded. 7) Homework should be done on standard 8 ½ x 11 paper. 8) If your paper has perforated edges on it, this must be torn off before submitting your homework. 9) Please make sure to show ALL of your work. This will be an integral part of your homework grade. Just answers will be counted completely wrong unless I deem that there is no work to be shown. 10) Assignments must be done in pencil or blue/black ink. No colored pens or pencils please.

It is your responsibility to keep up with the assignments. If you are absent, you need to either go to the class website or contact one of your classmates. I do not have a phone in my office so trying to contact me to find out the assignment will not be terribly efficient. I encourage each and every one of you to swap phone numbers and email addresses the first day of class in case of absence.

Exams: There will be three exams during the semester worth 20% each. The tentative exam dates are listed on the calendar, but please note these dates are tentative! I reserve the right to change the dates at any time, but be assured, I will always give you at least a week's warning before an exam. Each exam must be taken at the designated time to receive full credit. Exam times are not negotiable. An exam may be taken prior to the scheduled date provided the student contacts me at least one week before the student wishes to take the exam. If an exam is missed, the student must contact me within 24 hours of the scheduled test time. E-mail is the quickest way to reach me. I reserve the right to not allow students without a valid, verifiable excuse to make up the missed exam. This will be the case if you do not contact me in 24 hours. I further reserve the right to deduct 10 points per day late from each makeup exam. Hospitalization of the student, death of a close relative, and orders of a doctor would be considered valid excuses. Most other things (car trouble, sleeping thought the test, not feeling your best) would NOT.

Final Exam: The final exam will be on Tuesday, May 8 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The final will be comprehensive so please do not wait until the very end to study for this course!!

Cheating: Cheating will most definitely not be tolerated. If I see you cheating, you will be subject to any punishment I see appropriate, up to and including, receiving a failing grade for the course and being referred to the Dean of Students. So just don't do it!!

Drop Policies: The last day to drop with a W (passing) is February 23. The last day to drop a class at all is March 27.

Evaluations: This year, student evaluations of the professor will be done online at http://evaluate.unt.edu. Please note that completing this evaluation will be mandatory. I will deduct 10 points from your overall average if the evaluation is not completed. Students with Disabilities: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, it is the responsibility of students with certified disabilities to provide the instructor with appropriate documentation from the Dean of Students Office.
