A very special welcome to this year’s Sports Awards presentation. This evening provides us with an opportunity to say thanks and well done to the UCD sports people who through their achievements have brought prestige and honour to their clubs and to the University.
The full list of your achievements is outlined in this booklet and we continue to be amazed at the scale and diversity of your success. Recognising your success we have commissioned a special UCD sports pin badge for each person whose achievements are outlined in this booklet. These will be given to your club captain for distribution and we hope that you will wear this badge of achievement with pride.
As well as recognising your individual achievements, it is important to also give credit to the clubs and particularly the committees of each club who have administered to the needs of their members throughout the year. The efforts of the clubs and the respective committees is very much appreciated.
On behalf of the Athletic Union Council Executive committee and the committees of our affiliated clubs, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of UCD Sport, UCD Sport & Fitness, UCD Student Centre, UCD Buildings Office, UCD Bursars Office and the other University Authorities for their continued support of club activities. As we all know the provision of sporting opportunities in UCD is a team effort, and we are most thankful for their assistance, encouragement and provision of excellent facilities.
I would like to specifically acknowledge Dr. Martin Butler, Vice President for Students for his on-going commitment and enthusiastic support of UCD Sport. In particular, I would like to thank him for his support of this evenings celebrations.
Thanks is also due to the many sponsors and benefactors of our clubs and teams, for their continued support of our students. In particular, I would like to acknowledge Bank of Ireland Montrose for their sponsorship of the balloons for this evenings event.
In conclusion, congratulations to everyone involved in the UCD Sports Awards 2012/13. For those of you graduating, we hope that you have enjoyed your involvement with UCD sports clubs. For those of you who shall be returning next year, we look forward to your energetic involvement with us again.

Archery The Recurve team won the overall title at the Student Nationals and the University of Ulster Intervarsities. The victorious team was Aaron Callan, Anne Marie Donohue, Shane Keaveney, Stephen Masterson, Daniela Mueller, Ines Rauch, Kevin Roche and James Ryan. In terms of individual success Ines Rauch won the Advanced Female Recurve event and James Ryan won the Advanced Male Recurve event at the Intervarsities hosted by the University of Ulster.
Athletics The UCD men’s distance team coached by James Nolan had a fantastic year recording success in both the Intervarsity Road Relays and the Cross Country Championships beating rivals DCU into second place in both events. The victorious team was Robert Corbally, James Egan, Mark English, Christopher Johnston, Eric Keogh, Dan King, Alan McCormack, Richard Owens and Joe Sweeney. In terms of individual success Shauna Cannon won the 400 metre events at the Indoor University Championships and the Women’s National Indoor Championships. Mark English won the 400 metre event at the Outdoor University Championships. He also secured the National Senior Indoor title at 800 metre and was selected to represent Ireland at the Penn Relays in the US. Ciara Everard won the 800 metre event at the University Championships setting a new Irish University’s record of 2.03. Ciara also won the Irish Senior Women’s Indoor 800 metre national title setting a new National record of 2.02.54 in the process. Ciara then went on to represent Ireland with distinction at the European Indoor Athletics Championships where she finished in 6th place in the final in a time of 2.02.55. Dan King won the 800 metre University Championships Outdoor title. Fiona Roche won the Women’s Intervarsity Cross Country title. Dave Tierney won the Men’s Shot Putt events and the Men’s Weight for Distance events at the Outdoor and Indoor University Championships.
Ladies Basketball The senior team travelled to UCC for the Intervarsity tournament. Having not won the competition since 2001/2002 the team was keen to claim the prestigious award. Going into the final as underdogs against the University of Limerick, the team had an outstanding performance and sent the crowd crazy with a 3-point buzzer beater to win the game 65-62. UCD’s Eimear Máirtín was awarded MVP of the tournament. Eimear and team mate Sarah Woods, received All-Star awards. The victorious team coached by Jay Fazande was Eimhear Browne, Indira Kaljo, Sarah Madden, Cliona Máirtín, Eimear Máirtín, Kate McDaid, Siobhan McGowan, Ailish McLaughlin, Beth Meany, Karen Meany, Mairead O’Driscoll, Carolyn O’Reilly, Carly Tyrell and Sarah Woods.
Ladies Boat It was a busy year for this UCD Club. At the London Metropolitan Regatta last June the Senior Coxless Fours beat Vesta Rowing Club by 3.17 seconds and the Intermediate Coxed Four crew won the Matt Wood Bowl. The victorious senior crew was Siofra Bennett, Grace Collins, Naomi Fearon and Claire NiReachtagain. While the victorious Intermediate crew was Aoife Feely, Orla Finnegan, Francis Judge, Aoife Ledwidge O’Brien (cox) and Aoife O’Riordan.
Page 3 At the Reading Amateur Regatta in June both the Novice Eight and the Intermediate Coxed Fours won their events. The victorious Novice crew was Tierna Brazil, Shauna Burke, Greta Hughes, Niamh Keegan (cox), Jenny Newman, Aoibhinn NiChionnaith, Ciara O’Donovan, Caoimhe O’Riordan and Isobel Stanley. While the victorious Intermediate crew was Orla Finnegan, Sarah Jane Hanmore, Niamh Keegan (cox), Shauna McEvoy and Ciara O’Donovan. At the Irish National Championships in July 2012 Amy Bulman won the Intermediate Single Scull. Rower Claire Lambe represented Ireland at the World Rowing World Cup III in Germany last June where she finished 3rd in the C Final. Claire also rowed for Ireland at the U23 World Rowing Championships where she finished 4th in the A Final LW1X. In September 2012 Claire won a silver medal at the World University Rowing Championships in Kazan.
Men’s Boat The representatives from Men’s Boat this year are David Neale and Geariod Duane who won the Intermediate Double scull event at the National Rowing Championships last July. David also secured victory in the Intermediate Single scull event at the Championships.
Cycling It was a fantastic year for the Cycling Club with numerous team and individual successes. UCD cyclists Colm Cassidy, Con Collis and Ian Richardson won the 2012 Men’s Elite National Time Trial in Tipperary. The team was joined by Anthony Walsh at the Ulster Team Time trial where they also won the team event. Mike Brookfield, Ross Collins, Ciaran O’Conluain and Ian Richardson won the team event at 2012 Leinster Road Race A2 Championships in Bunclody. Ian Richardson also won the individual title at the event. At the Ballinrobe 2-Day International Stage race UCD claimed the team title with cyclists Colm Cassidy, Ross Collins, Ciaran O’Conluain and Barrick Parker proving supreme. Colm Cassidy also won the Individual overall A1 event and Barrick Parker won the overall A3 event. Colm also won the A1 Stage 1.
Con Collis was the A2 Stage 2 winner at the Suir Valley 3-Day International. At the 2012 Intervarsity Road Race hosted by Trinity, UCD secured the team title. The victorious team was Eoin Morton, Terence O’Malley, Niall Quinn, Niamh Stephens and Colin Tobin. In terms of other individual successes Eoin Morton won the Leinster Road Race A3 Championships in Wexford and the A2 category at the Leinster 3-day stage race. At the Newry Wheeler 3-day event Ross Collins was the Stage 3 winner and Ian Richardson was the Stage 2 (TT) winner. Colm Cassidy won the Danny O’Shea Sorrento 10 mile TT A1 event and the Mark Hayden Memorial A1 event. Ciaran O’Conluain won the Mondello Open A1 event. Ian Richardson won the Leinster A2 Time Trial Championships in Dundalk, the Monie & Pat Nolan Memorial A1 event, the Ras Naomh Finian A3 event and the Mickey Palmer Time Trial A1 event (2013). Con Collis won the A2 event at Brendan Campbell Memorial, the A2 event at the Tommy Brady Memorial and the A1 event at the Lucan Grand Prix (2013).
Page 4 Eoin Morton won the A3 event at the Sean Nolan Meath Grand Prix. Sean McKenna won the A3 event at the Lucan Grand Prix (2013). Joseph Breheny won the A4 event at the Stamullen Grand Prix and the A4 event at the Jazzer Wherity Memorial in 2013.
Equestrian The club won the team event at National Tetrathlon Championships that were hosted in Belfast last November. The UCD team showed great stamina in the four events of running, swimming, shooting and riding to secure the victory. The victorious team was Emma Flemming, David McGeary, Luke McMullan and Rosemary Wentges.
Fencing The female fencers of UCD were dominant at the Irish Intervarsities securing success in both the Women’s Foil and Women’s Epee team categories. The victorious Epee team was Sive Brassil, Aoife Carey, Kate Coleman-Lenehan and Naomi Mullins. The victorious Foil team was Shona Carey, Jennifer Jennings, Nur Khairunisa Shazali and Joana Romalho. Notable individual achievements were those of Aoife Carey, Jennifer Jennings and John Wyatt represented Ireland on the team for the Five Nations. Arthur Lanigan-O’Keeffe represented Ireland in Modern Pentathlon at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Arthur finished 25th out of 36 competitors. Shona Carey, Kate Coleman-Lenehan, Jenny Jennings, Kevin Maher, Aoife O’Mahoney, Ronan Quinn and John Wyatt were all selected on the Irish Student Five Nations team. Kate Coleman Lenehan won the gold medal at the Dublin Epee event.
Kaitlin Foley won the Women’s Sabre category at the Irish Intermediates. Naomi Mullins won the Women’s Epee category at the East of Ireland Open. While Joana Romalho won the Women’s Foil category at the North of Ireland Open, the South of Ireland Open and the West of Ireland Open.
Men’s Gaelic Football Representing Men’s Gaelic Football are Paul Mannion and Jack McCaffrey who were members of the Dublin Senior Gaelic Football team that won the National League final against Tyrone in April 2013.
GAA Handball The Club won the Dublin 40 X 20 League. The victorious team was Tom Aird, Alan Armstrong, Sean Foley, Naoise Green, Peter Harte and Dan Noonan. Notable individual honours were those of Martin Mulkerrins who won the Men’s Open title at the 2013 USHA National Collegiate Championships in February. Marty also won the U19 title at the World Handball Championships in November. While Aine Casey and Laura Mannion won the Ladies B Doubles event at the World Handball Championships.
Ladies Hockey The Ladies Hockey Club had a fantastic season with the firsts securing the Leinster League title, the Chilean Cup (Universities Championships), while also reaching the Irish Senior Cup final and the last four of the Irish Hockey League. The team is currently in Catania at the Euro Hockey Champions Challenge I.
Page 5 The victorious squad is Niamh Atcheler, Emily Beatty, Leah Brennan, Kate Collins Smith, Stella Davis, Hannah deBurgh Whyte, Jamie Deacon, Maedhbh Delahunt, Tiffany Ellis, Nicola Evans, Leah Ewart, Brenda Flannery, Nicola Gray, Sarah Greene, Caroline Hill, Katie Mullan, Anna O’Flanagan, Rachel O’Reilly, Chloe Watkins and Samantha Willis. The second team won the Leinster Hockey Association Cup beating Naas 3-2 in the final. They also secured promotion to Division 2 in the Leinster League. The winning squad included Elisa Buckley, Caitriona Byrne, Maedhbh Delaunt, Tiffany Ellis, Rebecca Evans, Alice Hearden, Sadbh Hynes, Aileen Kyne, Kate Lenehen, Karen Motyer, Alex Murphy, Ailbhe O’Keefe, Samantha Willis and Sarah Woodroofe. The fifths won their Leinster Hockey Association Cup beating Muckross 5-0 in the final. They also secured promotion to Division 10 in the Leinster League. The winning squad was Emma Aspil, Orla Brady, Genevieve Brindley, Ciara Byrne, Amy Coogan, Laura Costello, Jade Hanely, Catherine Haugh, Liefe Holleway, Sally Kingston, Ciara Lynch, Bridget McKewon, Lisa Meehan, Sarah Merriman, Anna O’Carroll, Fiona Orr and Nicola Smyth. Notable individual honours were those of Niamh Atcheler, Nikki Evans, Leah Ewart, Brenda Flannery, Nicola Gray, Sarah Greene, Katie Mullan, Anna O’Flanagan and Chloe Watkins who were all capped at senior level for Ireland during 2012/13. Emily Beatty, Leah Ewart, Brenda Flannery and Sarah Greene were capped for Ireland Under 21’s at the European Championships. Also at Under 21 representative level Emily Beatty was capped for Leinster and Leah Ewart was capped by Ulster. While Helen O’Sullivan and Sam Willis were capped for the Southeast. Hannah deBurgh Whyte, Tiffaney Ellis and Caroline Hill were all capped for the Irish Universities.
Men’s Hockey The Club won the Leinster U21 Cup title for this first time in the Club’s history beating Monkstown 9-0 in the final on April 30th. The victorious team was Robert Burke, Nick Burns, Sam Butler, Ross Canning, Luke Chadwick (captain), Ben Dobson, Stephen Doherty, Billy Dore, Jeremy Duncan, Scott Margetson, Lorcan Miller, Ravin Nair, Shane O’Donoghue, Guy Prendergast, Conor Quinn, David Watkins and Sliabh Wells. Although silverware eluded the first team they did secure their highest ever finish in the Leinster League finishing on 34 points and securing qualification for the Irish Hockey League next season. Notable individual performances were those of Nick Burns, Sam Butler and Ben Dobson who were capped for Munster at Under 21 level. Also at Under 21 level Robbie Burke, Ross Canning, Luke Chadwick, Jeremy Duncan, Ravin Nair, Shane O’Donoghue, Conor Quinn and David Watkins were capped for Leinster. Notably the Leinster team secured the Interprovincial Championship for the second year running and was coached by UCD coach Rory O’Donoghue and managed by the UCD manager Peter Chadwick. Shane O’Donoghue was also capped for Ireland at the Champions Challenge in Argentina where the team won bronze. Shane also featured on the Irish team at the World Series Two event in India and was awarded player of the match in their critical game against China.
Hurling The Intermediate team won the Higher Education All Ireland Championship beating the University of Limerick in the final. The victorious squad managed by Declan Phelan was Simon Aylward, Thomas Aylward, Seamus Carroll, Sean Cheasty, Parraic Crone, Dean Crowley, James Foley, David Freeman, James Gilligan, Fearghus Hannon, David Higgins, Walter Holohan, James Hoyne, Daniel Keating, Tom Kiely, Darragh Martin, Conor Maloney, Matthew McCaffrey, Dillon Mulligan, Eamonn Mulry, Kieran Murphy, Jack Nolan, Aidan O’Dowd, Kevin O’Loughlin,
Page 6 Rob O’Loughlin, Cathal O’Neill, Mick O’Sullivan, Brendan Phelan, Danny Purcell, Liam Rochford and Brendan Walsh. Notable individual performances were those of Cillian Buckley, Willie Phelan, John Tennyson and Walter Walsh who were all members of the victorious Kilkenny All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship winning side in 2012 and the National Hurling League winning side in 2013. While Jack Dougan and Noel McGrath were named as Higher Education GAA Future Champions 2013.
Karate The Karate Club won the overall title for the third year in a row at the University Championships in Limerick. The victorious team was Maria Aragane, Liam Blundell, Paul Byrne, Darren Doherty, Sarah Finn, Khadijah Haron, Jack Jordan, Nick McCarthy, Aishling McNabb, Orla Moran, Aoife Nic Samhrain, John Barry Reidy, Jack Roche, Davy Shaw, Carole Anne Tari, Grainne Tobin and Yannick Treige. The overall victory was secured via success in many of the events including the Junior Kata team. The victorious team was Jack Roche, Davy Shaw and Yannick Treige. Intermediate Kata team were also winners, they were Paul Byrne, Nick McCarthy and John Barry Reidy. The Intermediate Kumite team won their event, the team was Nick McCarthy and John Barry Reidy. While the Senior Kumite team were also winners the team were Maria Aragane and Ashling McNabb. Notable individual successes at the University Championships were those of Jack Roche who won the Junior Kata event. Sarah Finn who won the Intermediate Kata event. Nick McCarthy who won the Intermediate Kumite event. Ashling McNabb who won the Senior Kumite event and Carole Anne Tari who won the Intermediate Kumite event.
Lacrosse The Lacrosse club had a fantastic year. The Women’s team won their first trophy at the Roma Leones Tournament in Rome in March. The victorious squad was Claire Boushell, Aoife Buckley, Amy Clarkin, Ashley DeFlumere, Sorcha Delargy, Ciara Doyle, Gretchen Egan, Aoife Ferguson, Caroline Gillespie, Judith Harrington, Maeve Jones O’Connor, Evanna Murphy, Laura O’Flynn, Kate O’Keefe, Aoife O’Shea, Caoimhe Rahill, Olivia Renney, Brittany Smith, Hazel Watson and Melissa Windover. The Men’s team won the Ireland Lacrosse League and have subsequently been invited to the European Lacrosse Club Championships in Belgium this September. The victorious players were Richard Blanc, Joseph Blitman, Tadhg Bolger, Ciaran Boylan, Theodore Burke, Hugh Byrne, Arthur Cullinan, Gerard Harris, Daniel Jones, Sean Judge, Gareth Kavanagh, Aidan Kelly, Quentin Louy, Tarlach MacGiolla Cheara, Andrew Moran, Andrew Murphy, Cillian Murphy, James Nolan, Donal O’Rinn, Sean O’Shaughnessy, Eoin Parsons, Jordan Reals, Lukas Schmeid, Brian Spour, Kevin Sweeney, David Tyler-McCourt, Matthew Weitz and Hunter Witmer. The mixed team also won the Dublinfest Lacrosse Tournament. The team was Richard Blanc, Aoife Buckley, Arthur Cullinan, Gretchen Egan, Gerard Harris, Sean Judge, Andrew Murphy, Evanna Murphy, James Nolan, Laura O’Flynn, Sean O’Shaughnessy, Aoife O’Shea, Eoin Parsons, Caoimhe Rahill, Olivia Renney and Melissa Windove. Notable individual achievements are those of Katelin Billups, Ashley DeFlumere and Evanna Murphy who have been selected to represent Ireland at the Lacrosse World Cup in Canada this July. While Tadhg Bolger, Cillian Murphy and Sean O’Shaughnessy have been selected on the Irish team for the Celtic Cup in Limerick this August.

Page 7 The club won the 2013 Irish Climbing Intervarsities, their only competitive event of the year, following fantastic performances across the team members. The victorious team was Cliona Ashe, Francesco Barbieri, Geraldine Beaubien, Miranda Beaubien, James Byrne, Neil Byrne, Lorraine Carr, Chloe Condron, Kate Connor, Philip Corr, Edward Cox, Eoin Diamond, Joseph Fitzpatrick, Gra Harrahill, Sam Hughes, Conor Looney, Harry Mahony, Ben Mangan, Conor McGovern, Tommy McGrath, Chris McKeagney, Lara McManus, Linda Monaghan, Emmet Murphy, Alice O’Connor, Brendan O’Rourke, Clare Ryan, Rory Sullivan and Ruth Sulzenbacher. Climber Edward Cox won first place in the Male A Beginners category having completed every route faced on his first attempt.
Netball The Netball Club enjoyed another successful year with victory for the first team in the University Championships beating Queens 26-21 in the final While the second team won the Netball Ireland Division 2 League title. The University Championship winning team was Emma Conway, Holly Corboy, Nicole Crockford, Emma Guerin, Ellen Kelly, Riona O’Hanlon, Maeve McQuillan and Moya McQuillan. The successful league team was Helena Carlyle, Marie-Ruth Coughlan, Tammy Grace, Holly Godson Treacy Ann Guerin, Niamh Henvey, Caoimhe Hughes and Clare Parsons. In terms of notable individual honours Holly Corboy was capped for Ireland. While Maeve McQuillan was capped for Northern Ireland.
Rifle Once again the Rifle Club members proved dominant in competition. At the Air Rifle Intervarsities and Colours the Junior and Senior squads won their events. The Junior squad members were Claire Hempenstall, Alanna Holmes, Sabrina Jackson, Leanne McGinley, Torben Marl, Penny Skanavi and Yue Sun. While the Senior squad members were Evan Boyd, Jizhao Liu, Nicholas Nalpas, Cillian O’Sullivan, Joe Thompson and Frederick Westerholt. There were a significant number of individual successes recorded by club members this year. At the Air Rifle National Championships Alanna Holmes won the Air Rifle Junior event and Penny Skanvi won the Air Rifle Class D event. At the August Air Open Sarah Dillon won the Air Rifle Class C event. John Hutchings won the Air Rifle Class D event and John Lancaster won the 60 Shot Overall event. At the September Air Open Claire Leyden won the 40 Shot Overall event. John Lancaster won the 60 Shot Overall event and the Air Rifle Class A event. Frederick Westerholt won the Air Rifle Class C event and S Izuddin Mohd Zali won the Air Rifle Class D event. At the Air Open I Leanne McGinley won the Air Rifle Class D event. Nicolas Nalpas won the Air Rifle Class B event and Hui Yu Tham won the Pistol event.
At the Autumn Air Open Graham Carey won the Air Rifle Class D event. John Lancaster won the 60 Shot Overall event and Nicolas Nalpas won the Air Rifle Class B event. At the Winter Air Open Jizhao Liu won the Air Rifle Class B event and Mairead Lancaster won the Air Rifle Class D event. At the DURC Air Open John Lancaster won the 60 Shot Overall event. Lorcan O’Carrol won the Air Rifle Class B event. At the New Year’s Air Open Bartley McFadden won the Air Rifle Class D event. Charlotte Cuffe won the 40 Shot Overall event. Cillian O’Sullivan won the Air Rifle Class B event.
Page 8 At the January Air Open Alanna Holmes won the Air Rifle Class D event. Lorcan O’Carrol won the 60 Shot Overall event and the Air Rifle Class B event. At the February Air Open Torben Marl won the men’s Air Rifle Class C event while Leanne McGinley won the women’s event. John Lancaster won the 60 Shot Overall event. At the April Air Open, John Lancaster won the 60 Shot Overall and Air Rifle Class A events. Valesca Lima won the 40 Shot Overall and the Air Rifle Class C events. And Penny Skanavi won the Air Rifle Class D event. At the Air Pistol National Championships Joe Thompson won the Air Pistol Overall event.
Rugby It was an amazing year for this UCD club. The first team secured promotion to Division 1 A of the All Ireland League following their 42-0 victory over Shannon. The team also retained the Dudley Cup. The victorious squad was Andrew Boyle, Risteard Byrne, Brian Cawley, Adam Clarkin, Sam Coughlan Murray, Andrew Cummiskey, Barry Daly, Patrick Dix, David Doyle, Niall Earls, Thomas Fletcher, Conor Gilsenan, Jamie Glynn, Shane Grannell, Rory Hannon, Rory Harrison, Eoin Joyce, Daniel Kenny, David Lynch, Emmet MacMahon, Luke McGrath, Mark McGroarty, Kieran Moloney, Stephen Murphy, Shane O’Meara, Robert Shanley, James Thornton, James Tracy and Michael Twomey. The Under 21’s coached by Vinny Hammond won the JP Fanagan League Cup, the Conroy Cup and the McCorry Cup. The victorious squad was Christopher Best, Liam Bourke, Adam Byrne, Bryan Byrne, Edward Byrne, James Carroll, Peter Conlon, Philip Crowe, Shane Delahunt, Conall Doherty, Cillian Duff, Gordon Frayne, Jack Gallagher, James Harrison, Bobby Holland, Rory Kavanagh, Donagh Lawler, Daniel Leavy, Dylan Leybourne, Kevin Lynch, Hugo Mays, Jonathan McDonnell, Andrew Murphy, Michael Murphy, Philip O’Dwyer, Rory O’Loughlin, Philip O’Neill, Stuart O’Sullivan, Oisin Tegeler, Gavin Thornbury, Peter Tierney, Peadar Timmins, John Van Der Flier and Andrew Walsh. UCD club players Rob Kearney, Sean O’Brien and Brian O’Driscoll have been selected on the British and Irish Lions squad for the forthcoming tour to Australia. Three players featured in the Irish Club side that played England and Scotland they were Danny Kenny, Risteard Byrne and Shane Grannell. Luke McGrath captained the Irish Under-20 team for the Six Nations Championship. He was joined on the squad by fellow UCD club members Gavin Thornbury, Bryan Byrne, Peadar Timmins and Josh Van Der Flier. Liam Bourke was selected to represent America at the Under 20 Rugby World Cup. Shane Delahunt and Rory O’Loughlin were capped for Ireland at Under 19 level were. Capped for Leinster at Senior Level were Adam Byrne, Andy Boyle, Jordan Coghlan, Sam Coghlan Murray, James Tracy and Luke McGrath. Capped for Leinster A were Adam Byrne, Bryan Byrne, Jordan Coghlan, Sam Coghlan Murray, David Doyle, Conor Gilsenan, Luke McGrath, Rory O’Loughlin, James Tracy and Josh Van Der Flier. Capped for Leinster Under 20 were Liam Bourke, Edward Byrne, Bryan Byrne, Jamie Glynn, Bobby Holland, Rory Kavanagh, Donagh Lawlor, Dan Leavy, Philip O’Dwyer, Rory O’Loughlin, Gavin Thornbury, Peadar Timmons and Josh Van Der Flier. Capped for Leinster at Under 19 level were Adam Byrne, Shane Delahunt and Ken Murray. While Philip O’Neill was capped for Connacht at Under 19 level.
Sailing It was a terrific year for this UCD club with 10 club members selected to represent Ireland at the Student Yachting World Championships in La Rochelle, France last October. The team of
Page 9 Ellen Cahill, Simon Doran, David Fitzgerald, Ben Fusco, Cathal Leigh Doyle, Barry McCartin, Aidan McLaverty, Isabella Morehead, Theodore Murphy and Alyson Rumball secured overall victory at the event beating their thirteen rivals with a comprehensive 12 point margin of victory. The club will defend the title again this year. Notable individual performance was that of Annalise Murphy who represented Ireland at the London Olympics finishing 4th in the Laser Radial class. Annalise also competed in the ISAF World Sailing Championships where she finished 6th. She finished 4th at the Miami Olympic Class regatta, 7th in the Laser Radial European Championships and 3rd at the ISAF World Cup in Weymouth. She is currently ranked 10th in the world. She recently won the ISA Sailing Achievement Award and was voted the AFLOAT Sailor of the Year. She will represent Ireland at the Laser European Championships this August in Dun Laoghaire.
Soccer The Men’s Soccer club retained their Collingwood Crown following their 2-0 defeat of UCC in the final. The victorious team coached by Diarmuid McNally and Tony Sheridan was Samir Belhout, Robert Benson, Tomas Boyle, Tristan Dent, Niall Hanley, John Kelly, Robert Keogh, Mark Langtry, Ryan McLaughlin, Michael Leahy, Barry McCabe, Brian McDonald, Mark McGinley, David McMillan, Tyrone McNellis, Cillian Morrison, Robert Murray, Brian O’Brochlain, David O’Connor, Michael Whelan and Niall Wright. Samir Belhout, Tristan Dent, Niall Hanley, Cillian Morrison and Tyrone McNellis were all capped for the Irish Universities team.
Swimming & Waterpolo This UCD Club had a great season with significant individual achievements and hosting the varsities for the first time in the new 50m pool. The event was a huge success with UCD swimmers claiming numerous individual titles, resulting in the club winning the Women’s Team event, the Men’s Team event and the overall Intervarsity title. The Men’s team was David Cooney, Donal Crowe, Michael Dalton, Henry Dean Smal, Luke Dowling, Donal Drought, Brian Feighan, Eoin Gray, Daniel Hecker, Conor Hillick, Jack Keogh, Arthur Lanigan O’Keeffe, John Martin, Niall McAuley, Callum McKinney, Phil Meagher, Paul Murphy, Conor O’Keeffe, Alex Rathke, Rob Stout and Diarmuid Sugrue. The Women’s team was Sive Brassil, Kate Coleman, Lisa Comerford, Aisling Cooney, Niamh Fogarty, Caoimhe Gowran, Eva Kelly, Louise Kent, Romy Madden, Anna McKenna, Chloe Meehan, Naomi Mullins, Aoife Murray, Ciara Murray, Claire O’Donovan, Shauna O’Brien, Sarah Power, Shani Stallard, Xela Steenberge and Aleksandra Surowiec. Notable individual performances at Varsities were those of Aisling Cooney who won the 200 metre and 100 metre backstroke events. Donal Drought won the 100 metre and 200 metre individual medley events. Jack Keogh won the 200 metre butterfly. Shauna O’Brien won the 100 metre and 200 metre butterfly events. Shani Stallard won the 200 metre freestyle event. While Xela Steenberge won the 50 metre backstroke event. The Women’s relay team of Aisling Cooney, India McGlynn, Shauna O’Brien and Shani Stallard won the 200 metre medley and 200 metre freestyle events. Setting new national records in the process. The Men’s relay team of David Cooney, Donal Drought, John Martin and Henry Dean Smal won 200 metre freestyle event. UCD also won the Cannon relay with Aisling Cooney, David Cooney, Donal Drought, John Martin, Shauna O’Brien and Shani Stallard. Lisa Comerford won the 800 metre event at the Swedish Grand Prix in Uppsala. Aisling Cooney is the short course National Champion in both 50 metre and 100 metre backstroke.
Page 10 Shauna O’Brien set two Irish records in the 50 metre butterfly, 27.75seconds long course and 27.30 seconds short course. Shauna also won the National titles in the 50 metre and 100 metre butterfly events both long and short course. Shani Stallard represented Ireland at the European Championships in both the 50 metre and 200 metre breast stroke events. Shani is also the current 50 metre breaststroke short course National Champion.
Table Tennis The Table Tennis team continued their winning ways as they recorded successes at Varsity and National level during the season. The Men’s team continued their dominance of the Irish Universities Championships as they took the team event for the 14th year in a row. UCD also took the National Team Championships for the second year in a row. The Men’s team was made up of Rory Coffey, Matt Finlay, Gavin Maguire, Niall McDonnell, Sean O'Gorman and Jack Stapleton. UCD Ladies also retained their Varsity team title, winning the Ladies team event for the 5th year in a row. The team was made up of Sarah Byrne, Clodagh McCullagh, Stephanie McKenna and Sarah Timlin. At an individual level, Sarah Timlin won the National Under 21 Ladies title and also took the Irish Universities Ladies Singles Championship title for the 2nd year in a row. Sarah Timlin and Gavin Maguire were selected for Ireland at Senior level. Sarah was selected for Connacht at Senior level, while Gavin was called up for Leinster at Senior level. Matt Finlay and Clodagh McCullagh were selected for Leinster at Under 21 level.
Tae Kwon Do Although team success eluded the club this year a number of members secured victory in individual events. Lucy Bofin won gold in the Lightweight sparring event at the Munster Open, the Connaught Open and the Irish International Open. Also at the Irish International Open John Byrne won gold in the Heavyweight sparring event. Lloyd Dube won the Men’s Patterns event. Ciara Fitzpatrick won the middleweight sparring event. Peter Moloney won the Men’s lightweight sparring event. Ciara Fitzpatrick also won the middleweight sparring event at the RITA Open.
Trampoline At the Intervarsities the UCD A team won their respective event. The successful team was Sean Cusack, Dwayne McCaffrey, Maeve O’Callaghan and Ross O’Ceallaigh. Also at the intervarsities Ross O’Ceallaigh won the Intermediate Men’s event. Dwayne McCaffery won the Novice Men’s event. While Megan Zecevic won the Novice Ladies Event. At the Irish Student Trampoline Open Ross O’Ceallaigh won the Intervanced Men’s event and Lauren Clisby won the Level 3 Tumbling event. At the Scottish Student Trampoline event Colm Galligan won the Novice Men’s event and Deirdre Hogan won the Novice Ladies event. Rosie Boland won the Intermediate Ladies event at the Dublin Open. While David Glasgow won the Rathdrum Regional’s and qualified for the Trampoline National Finals.
Volleyball The Women’s team secured overall victory at the Intervarsities in Belfast beating DCU 2-1 in the final. The victorious team coached by Gianni Massa and managed by Miriam Schneider
