The UW Medicine Department of Neurological Surgery Neurosciences Summer Student Program

The UW Medicine Department of Neurological Surgery Summer Student Program provides “Bench to Bedside” exposure in the field of neurosciences.

Established in 2008 by Richard G. Ellenbogen, M.D., Professor and Chair of the UW Department of Neurological Surgery, the program provides students seeking summer lab placements the opportunity to explore basic and clinical neurosciences.

Our hope is that students will be so excited by their work that they will desire to pursue an academic career in research and/or medicine.

PARTICIPATION INCLUDES:

□ EIGHT WEEK LAB PLACEMENT IN ONE OF OUR NEUROSCIENCE LABS

□ WEEKLY NEUROLOGICAL SURGERY GRAND ROUND LECTURES

□ WEEKLY NEUROSCIENCE FACULTY LECTURES

□ OR OBSERVATION

□ STUDENT PRESENTATION OF INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM FOCUS

Sixty high school and college students from 40 different schools have participated in the program over the past 5 years. Students have been placed in 15 different laboratories, attended over 80 separate Grand Rounds presentations, observed and followed 11 different surgeons, and had weekly lunch seminars with 18 different faculty members. Several students from our earliest classes have now been accepted into medical school, and many of the high school students have gone on to neuroscience or pre-med studies in college. We actively encourage students of color and limited means to participate and are proud to be a placement site for the Rainier Scholars program and the UW Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation.
