Battle of Algiers
The relationship between The Battle of Algiers and the current situation in Iraq was the most interesting part about the assignment. Although the movie was filmed in 1966 it is still hold current to the events affecting the United States currently. The movie focused on the terrorist attacks of the Algerians on the French troops stationed there and the torture tactics used by the French to discover the terrorist cells. Unfortunately, the French failed in their attempt to colonize Algeria and the Algerian FLN (National Liberation Front) disregarded the democratic process to incite more violence, however this time from the GIA (Armed Islamic Group). The most important questions posed in correlation to the American situation in Iraq is: Is America exploiting Iraq just as the French exploited Algeria? Did the Americans and the French have motives to invade Iraq and Algeria? What should America do next? Is the War on Terrorism going to end the same way as The Battle of Algiers did? Is America doomed to fail in its quest to free the world of terrorism?
