Aurelien Verdet

Verdet has grape contracts with growers in which he stipulates the criteria for the early part of the growing season. He then takes over the vineyard work in July and harvests and vinifies the grapes, then bottles the wines. The grapes are tended organically but not certified. Only his own Domaine Hautes Cotes de Nuits – Le Prieure is certified organic. Fruit is harvested manually and all the cuvees are vinified the same way: he uses minimal sulfur, vinifications are long – up to 30 days and his extraction is very gentle; there are very few pigeages. The wine is aged in oak, not exceeding 40% new every year – Tronçais and Vosges.

Domaine Laurent Cognard 2010 MONTAGNY 1er Cru “Les Bassets” October

Following years as a wine consultant and then as a commercial agent for Billecart Salmon he returned home to Buxy permanently to take over his family’s vineyards – the produce of which had been hitherto delivered to the local cooperative. Currently, he tends 6 hectares. He has been revamping the vines and weaning them progressively onto an organic model involving much plowing to drive the roots deeper into the “terroir”. His flagship wine is the 1er Cru “Les Bassets” of which he has exclusive ownership of the upper portion which can only be sold as 1er Cru. Pg. 3

AUBIN BLANC – 1er Cru Champlots 2006 PULIGNY MONTRACHET A.C. Jean Claude Bachelet and his son Benoit operate from their neat, but tiny residence in Gamay near St. Aubin. Rather shy and unassuming they understand that great wine is made by producing great grapes. Consequently they spend a great deal of time on their tractors working the vineyards and paying meticulous care to the procedures of winemaking. St. Aubin is a specialty here, they produce three. The St. Aubin – Champlots 1er Cru is very attractive with its pineapple, tropical, creamy character. This vineyard has a high clay content. The Chassagne – Encegnieres is located just below Batard Montrachet. The other Chassagne – Les Macherelles, is located in the middle of Chassagne and displays a stony, flinty taste. 25% to 50% new oak depending on the vintage, 1er Cru or Grand Cru.

2009 CHAT. RECOUGNE – Bordeaux Superieur Located just outside of Fronsac, the vineyards are planted on a deep, gravelly bench, producing chewy red wines (75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc). Despite not being aged in oak (exception the “Terra Recognita”) the wine does not seem to lack this influence. Lovely aromatics highlighted by cherried fruit, this wine is capable of aging beautifully despite its humble Bordeaux Superieur classification.

This Chateau was purchased by the Milhade family in 1996. Their work has been to upgrade every aspect of this Chateau. Yields are kept low, the vineyard is hand- harvested, and a severe selection is made for the grand vin. Natural yeasts are used for the fermentation. The blend here is 70% Merlot, and 30% Cab. The Cotes du Rhone is produced from a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Carignan, 5% Syrah and 5% Cinsault. The wine displays gorgeous notes of cinnamon, plums, black cherries and tobacco. The finish is persistent, with beautiful high toned notes of dried fruits that linger on the finish. Excellent value.

‘”Domaine Mavette is a family winery run by the third generation that issues what might be described as unusually ‘honest’ wines…the 2007 is a rich, supple, wonderfully scented red wine…the price is a bargain for the quality…” M.Kramer

The Gigondas is comprised of 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault. Good weight and density here.

The family Guiraud cultivates vines on 2 locations – Veyran and Causses. The estate is approx. 25 hectares of which 15 are currently planted. The vine has been grown on this land for over 2000 years. The varieties are Syrah, Carignan, Grenache and Mourvedre.

Chateau Villerembert-Moureau 2010 Minervois (Carignan, Syrah, Grenache) Villerembert-Moureau was acquired in 1926 and was one of the first vineyards to actually produce wines on the estate. Since the 1980’s, the owner Marceau Moureau has passed on his passion for wine to his 3 sons. Vinification: Carbonic maceration for the Carignan. Traditional maceration for the Grenache and Syrah. Chateau Margüi (Ecocert-Organic) 2011 ROSÉ – Coteaux Varois (Provence) 2009 COTEAUX VAROIS Rouge 2010 BLANC – Les Pierre Sauvages

Located in the AOC of Coteaux Varois en Provence, this revitalized chateau and its vineyards have been brought back to like so-to-speak with new owners Philippe and Marie Christine Guillanton. Literally abandoned since the 1970’s, the estate had a history of winemaking for centuries. The new owners bought the property in 2000 and began the renovation project that included vineyards, the chateau and a new winery facility. The Rosé which was accredited as “biologique” (Ecocert) in 2008, is made from Grenache and Cinsault. A white and red are also produced. The red is made from 80% Syrah and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and the Blanc is Rolle and Ugni Blanc. Pg 6 Domaines Elie Sumeire 2011 ROSÉ – Château Coussin 2009 RESERVE de FAMILLE – Cezanne – 2007 CHATEAU MAUPAGUE The history of the Sumeire family has been linked with wine for more than five centuries. Located near the village of Trets near Aix en Provence at the foot of the Sainte Victoire Mountain, the family did extensive remodeling of cellars and replanting of vineyards during the 70’s and 80’s. The Rosé is made from 80% Grenache and 20% Cinsault . Chateau Maupague is one of the other estates the Sumeire family owns. The name ‘Maupague’ means giving little. The hillside vineyards are composed of clay and limestone. The wine is produced from Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache. Expressive of terroir, the wine offers scents of black fruits and earth. The Blanc is made from Rolle, Clairette and Ugni Blanc.

The winery was founded by Lorenzo Picollo in 1945. Today his son Ernesto takes care of the winemaking and his grandson Gianlorenzo (a trained enologist) manages both the 9 hectares of vineyards and the administration. Their vineyards lie mostly in the Rovereto zone of production. They produce only Gavi, from the best commune – Gavi di Gavi. Excellent quality and consistency.

Luna dell Rospo 2009 BARBERA d’ASTI “Silente” Rapalino – Podere di Gallo (Monforte d’Alba) 2009 BARBERA d’ALBA – Pian Romualdo 2006 NEBBIOLO LANGHE Federico Rapalino is one of 3 owners of this prestigious vineyard, noted for the quality of its Barbera. His father bought the property in the sixties. At that time livestock inhabited the ground floor of the house and there were hazelnut trees and vines on the property. Rapalino’s first commercial vintage was 1997. He also makes small quantities of Dolcetto and Nebbiolo. The Barbera is aged in small botti, 18 HA in size. The Nebbiolo lies 300 yards outside the boundary for Barolo in the commune of Monforte.

Bruno Nada (his father is Fiorenzo) is in charge of the family production. His reputation is more known in Italy and Germany than here in the U.S. at this time. Maybe a good thing, since very limited quantities make their way to these shores. The Rombone 2004 received “3 glasses” from Gambero Rosso – the 3rd time this wine has received this coveted award. His other wines – Seifile consistently received 2 glasses, and his Dolcetto is worth seeking out. Then there is the stunning Nebbiolo Langhe…which will rival some Barbaresco!

Wine Advocate Oct 31,2006: “With his 2003 Barbaresco Rombone, Bruno Nada once again demonstrates that he belongs to the elite group of producers in the region. It is a deeply colored wine, with aromas of sweet toasted oak, menthol and spices that float our of the glass..This big Barbaresco is a perfect example of the powerful, full-throttle style shared by many of the best… Pg 8 Montaribaldi 2010 DOLCETTO d’ ALBA – Vagnona . 2009 TRE STELLE Langhe Rosso (Barbera,Nebbiolo and Dolc.) 2010 BARBERA d’ASTI – Consolina 2008 BARBERA d’ALBA – Du Gir 2006 BARBARESCO – Sori Montaribaldi 2006 BARBARESCO – Sori Montaribaldi (wood box) 1.5Lt 2005 BARBARESCO – Sori Montaribaldi (wood box) 3.0Lt 2009 BARBARESCO – Palazzina 2011 MOSCATO d’ASTI “Righey” 2010 ARNEIS “Capural” 2011 CHARDONNAY – La Stissa di Favole

In 1994 Luciano and Roberto Taliano took over the direction of their father’s business and began bottling the wine from the grapes produced in their family’s vineyards (in Barbaresco). The prestige of the winery rests with their 2 Barbareschi – the cru “Sori Montaribaldi” and their “Palazzina” which comes from a parcel in the Starderi cru in Nieve.

Reverdito Michele Revedito began his family’s commercial sales of wines from their holdings with the 2000 vintage. He has added several other Barolos since this time. Gambero Rosso gave Reverdito his 1st “Tre Bicchieri” wine with the 2004 Bricco Cogni which was just released this past year. The vineyards have been owned by the Marcarino family for many years. In the sixties Renzo Marcarino bottled the first wines from the property. Today, Marina Marcarino runs the winery and is one of a few female winemakers in Piedmont. An interesting note – Punset is the only winery in the area that was totally converted to the growth of vines with organic certified methods. Their “cru “ Barbaresco – Campo Quadro –occupies a hillside at 400 meters in altitude. A strict selection of the best grapes is made. Sixty percent of the wine is aged in French oak barrels and 40% in aged in double barriques. Production is approx. 600 cases per year. The Wine Spectator gave the 2000 vintage 93 pts. If you missed that vintage we would suggest not to miss this one!!

Note: The Barbarescoa 2007 received a score of “95” pts from the Wine Spectator. “ This concentrated, well-toned red is packed with cherry, plum, soy and spice aromas and flavors Round and balanced, with a sweet berry and mineral aftertaste. Really builds nicely, gaining elegance and intensity.

The early 1980’s represented a turning point for the winery as the primary objective was to reach quality levels unknown at that time in Romagna. This quest began in the vineyard – new vines and lower yields. Also, updating in the cellar was undertaken. Winemaking was overseen 1st by the very young Francesco Spagnolli in the early ‘80s, then Vittorio Giore and later Donato Lanati.

Duemilavini, the official annual wine guide of the Italian Association of Sommeliers has awarded again its highest honor – “Five Grappoli” to the Thea 2004. With this award Tre Monti has received the Tastevin ranking for having received the “Five Clusters” distinction ten times. This is the only winery from Emilia Romagna to have received this award.

It was founded by Domenico Blasig in 1788 at Ronchi dei Legionari. Five generations of winemakers cover 220 years in their history Today the winery is run by Elisabetta Bortolotto Sarcinelli. The wine production is directed by enologist Erica Orlandino, who worked at Ronco del Gnemiz and Vigna del Leon previously. Annual production is approx. 8,000 cases

Az.Ag. Branko 2011 PINOT GRIGIO – Collio 2010 CHARDONNAY – Collio 2011 FRIULANO – Collio The first vintage from Igor Erzetic that we imported was 1999. We were fortunate to have jumped on the band wagon at the time as his wines have become allocated due to their small production and Igo’s growing reputation, fueled by 3 consecutive “tre bicchieri” awards for his Pinot Grigio.

PETRUCCO 2010 PINOT GRIGIO – Colli Orientale 2010 FRIULANO – Colli Orientale 2010 SAUVIGNON – Colli Orientale The present owners, Lina and Paolo Petrucco bought this winery in 1981. They are located in the hilly commune of Buttrio, in the Colli Orientale zone of production. Together with the “Collio” DOC, the “Colli Orientale” zone is considered to be the best terroir for Friuli wines. Petrucco’s climate is composed of Eocene marl known locally as “ponca” (thousands of years ago marine deposits contributed to this particular soil). The whites all possess a mineral quality to greater and lesser degrees.

Several years ago the owners hired Gianni Menotti, a noted enologist in the area (Villa Russiz) to assist with their wines

Anselmi - Zellina

Azienda Agricola Anselmi is located in the Latisana DOC zone of Friuli, an area that was already known for its fine wines at the time of ancient Rome. The estate was established by the Anselmi family in the 1920’s. They have passed down their experience through 3 generations of children and grandchildren. The “Zellina” label is their “value” range.

There are three owners who began this winery 35 years ago. Domenico Pedrini oversees the wine production (he attended enological school with Jermann). Domenico is not afraid to take chances, creating unusual wines such as Stravino. The common thread for all the wines is that they are clean, well made and very expressive of their varietal heritage. Maybe the most esoteric is their Stravino which is comprised of 5 varieties and aged in acacia wood. The single vineyard Pinot Grigio – Polin – with its slight copperish color is “Pinot Grigio with an attitude” – less than 500cs produced. For afficianodos of the more esoteric varieties, Nosiola “Le Frate” is well worth a try. This is the wine of which Domenico is the most proud.

LOMBARDY Provenza 2011 LUGANA – Ca Maiol 2010 LUGANA – Ca Molin 2011 CHIARETTO (rosato) 2010 GARDA ROSSO (Gropello, Marzemino, Sangiovese,Barbera) 2009 NEGRESCO NV SEBASTIEN Brut Spumante NV SEBASTIEN Brut Rose Spumante This family run winery is owned by Fabio and Patrizia Contatto. Their family’s origins are from Provence. Fabio’s father moved to Lake Garda in the late sixties. The list of wines from this estate offer a range of variety. From the Trebbiano-based Lugana (a different clone than the Tuscan variety, called “Turbiana” by the locals). Chiaretto, the rosato, is made from 4 red grape varieties: Sangiovese, Barbera, Groppello and Marzemino. The Negresco is also made from these same varietals with stricter selection and aging in barriques, with only a small percentage being new. The “Ca Molin” 2009 differs from past vintage in that it now does not receive any barrique aging. Richer, it has more definition than the regular “Ca Maiol” bottling. Sertoli Salis 2009 BACCALITT (made from 85% Nebbiolo and 15% Pinot Noir) 2006 CAPO di TERRA 2005 CORTE della MERIDIANA RISERVA 2005 CANUA – SFORZATO 2011 TORRE della SIRENA (White – from Rossola, Pignola and Nebbiolo)

Utilizing old enological techniques particular to the area, this producer in the Valtellina is rapidly gaining attention for the quality of their wines, which are made from Nebbiolo. Steeply terraced vineyards which translate into hard work is only the beginning of the story here. Low yields and the use of an old technique referred to as rinforzo (strengthening the wine) is used in the production of the Corte della Meridiana. A portion of the grapes (15-20%) are left to dry until late fall when they are added to the other wine which initiates a second fermentation. This gives added richness. Their top wine – Canua – is made from 100% dried grapes and is referred to as ‘Sforzato’. The 97,99 and 2000 vintages received ‘Three glasses’ from Gambero Rosso. The white wine – Torre della Sirena – made from pink colored grapes, with light pressing, is very distinct. The blend is made from Rossola and Pignola . Pg 15 Veneto Clara C NV PROSECCO Extra Dry 92/40-/7.70 po NV ROSE BRUT The “C” stands for Carpene - a historical name in the world of Prosecco. Very seldom does one see such consistent quality in each wine. And yes, the Amarone, especially the Pegrandi is exceptional. For something unusual and quite distinct – try the Castaroto. It is made from all indigenous varieties – that include Corvina (in the largest percentage) together with Oseleto, Rabosa and Cabrusina. Total production here is approx. 4500 cases per year. That’s small.

Marches/Abruzzo Fratelli Barba 2007 Vignafranca (100% Montepulciano – 3 Bicchieri award for 06/07) April The winery is located in Scerne di Pineto, at the foot of the Colle Morino hills with 30 hectares of vineyards. The Barba family is made up of 3 brothers. The present winery was completed in 1991. Equipped with the latest technology. The 2006 and 2007 received “Tre Bicchieri” awards from Gambero Rosso 2007 Vignafranca: “…everyone agreeing on the caressing Vignafranca 2007 and its well-defined, stylish notes. The full, commanding palate is also superbly vibrant and balanced…” Piergiovanni Giusti 2009 LACRIMA di MORO d’ALBA 2008 RUBBJANO – Lacrima di Morro d’Alba They do not come any more esoteric than this! From a variety so ancient in the Marche that its origins remain a mystery. Lacrima di Morro d’Alba earned DOC status in 1985.

Piergiovanni Giusti is carrying on his father’s work, who was one of a few who brought this variety back into production from near extinction. New cellars, technologically up-to-date, together with the aid of enologist Giancarlo Soverchia, a specialist in the traditional grapes of the Marche has gained attention for this winery. The 2010 follows a number of excellent vintages - it has a most particular nose, scents of honeysuckle, rose petals and tropical notes. Very distinct! pg 16 Lanari 2010 ROSSO CONERO 2007 ROSSO CONERO – D’Inclite 2007 FIBBIO – Conero DOCG Riserva

Gambero Rosso 2005 “Monte Conero is not geologically uniform. White and pink calcareous flakes give way to lower Pleistocen lake-floor clays and sandstones. This variegated structure is reflected in differences in the areas and wineries throughout the denomination, even when they are contiguous. At Lanari, in the heart of the parco del Conero, we find wines showing richly structured nose and palate, and fruit that is always perfectly ripened and well integrated with the oak. Giancarlo Soverchia, a consummate expert, oversees both vineyard and cellar operations, and has brought growth across the whole line. The winery style can be defined as consistency of quality and balance, which they have achieved even in difficult years such as 2002.”

Wine Advocate: “Lanari’s 2007 Conero Riserva Fibbio, the estate’s top wine, is 100% Montepulciano. Layers of perfumed dark red fruit meld together seamlessly, followed by hints of tar, licorice, minerals and scorched earth, all of which add a dimension of darkness. It is rich and extroverted yet also wonderfully balanced and totally harmonious….impressive from start to finish….92pts

Dr. Giuseppe Benanti has conducted in depth research on the indigenous varieties of Sicily with respect to the microclimates and soils of Etna. In 1988 Dr. Benanti began his commitment to making flagship wines in the Etnean region. His great-grandfather began making wines in the area in the late 1800’s. Originally, the family came from Sardinia. The Rovitello and Lamoremio are exemplary wines. The basic red – Rosso Verzella – offers exceptional drinking, very stylish, elegant delivery. The two white wines – Bianco di Caselle and Pietramarina – are both made from the indigenous Carricante grape. The Pietramarina, (the current vintage is 2007), is not released until 4 years after the vintage. No wood aging, the wine is very distinct, the finish is lingering. Three glass winner In addition, the Benanti winery was voted Gambero Rosso’s 2007 Winery of the Year.

Az. Ag. Curto 09/10 Nero d’Avola “Eloro” At the end of the 16th century, the Curto family moved to Spaccafrono where ancient documents indicate their status as landowners. The Curtos have been viticulturists since 1670 and they still own 200 hectares of which 30 are planted to grapes. Towards the end of the 20th century the estate began to seriously focus on winemaking. Newly planted vineyards together with a modern cellar make the future promising for this winery. This Nero d’Avola from the DOC of Eloro is near Pachino which has the reputation for the best Nero d’Avola.
