TOOL: SCHEDULING CHECKLIST Each school design team should use this checklist to review the school’s new schedule, clarifying or adjusting the schedule as needed based on team members’ responses.

Overall: Our schedule: ☐ Has a clear link to the school’s Opportunity Culture goals ☐ Minimizes short blocks of time ☐ Minimizes unnecessary transitions ☐ Has period lengths that align with student and teacher need/ability

Students’ Time: The schedule: ☐ Aligns time in core subjects and electives with student need and school priorities ☐ Provides adequate flexibility to adjust time or class/instructional group size as required by student need ☐ Schedules the highest-priority classes at the “sweet spot” of a student’s day

Teachers’ Time: The schedule: ☐ Creates adequate independent planning time for all teachers, commensurate with larger class loads ☐ Provides adequate planning time for blended-learning teachers to design online learning before the school year begins, revise throughout the year, and collaborate with and develop the reach associate ☐ Includes adequate collaborative planning time per week, consistent with the district’s parameters for collaborative planning time: ☐ for teaching teams to plan together ☐ for teaching teams/reach-extending teachers to plan with intervention/enrichment specialists, ☐ Ensures that correct groupings of teachers/teams have collaborative planning time ☐ Clarifies who facilitates collaborative planning time and ensures that person’s availability ☐ For multi-classroom leaders, provides: ☐ adequate individual time for planning and data review ©2014 Public Impact To copy or adapt this material, 1 see OpportunityCulture.org/terms-of-use ☐ adequate flexible time for multi-classroom leaders to carry out the responsibilities of an MCL, including direct student instruction, observing/developing team teachers, and planning with and for team teachers ☐ Clarifies use of time of electives/specials teachers beyond their courses (such as lunch coverage)

©2014 Public Impact To copy or adapt this material, 2 see OpportunityCulture.org/terms-of-use Intervention/Enrichment Time The schedule: ☐ Allows support staff of teachers such as ESL or special education to reach all students they need to, either by staggered intervention/enrichment periods that support lower group sizes (but hinder cross-grade grouping), or with whole-school scheduling that allows cross-grade groups (but hinders reductions in group size) ☐ Clarifies teachers’ roles during intervention/enrichment time, including teaching assistants or specials/electives teachers ☐ Clarifies how often students may be grouped/regrouped
