LEADERSHIP 2009-2010

Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary

Plan of Action: Leadership Committee

Purpose: To develop and prepare knowledgeable and capable leaders to carry on the growth and success of the Auxiliary by promoting activities and resources that educate, motivate, and mentor members of all ages and at all levels.

Committee Chairman: Glenda Wheelis 35 Oak Tree Drive, Laurel, MS 39443 Phone 601-649-5463 e-mail [email protected]

Committee Members: Diane Cantrell 1909 Winwood, Gautier, MS 39553 Phone 228-497-6410 e-mail [email protected]

Inez McCain P.O. Box 415, Cleveland, MS 38732 Phone 662-846-1891 e-mail [email protected]

Leadership Goals:

I. Educate Members: Leadership chairmen must strive to educate members on Auxiliary programs and duties of officers.

II. Motivate Members: Keep your meetings interesting and fun as you learn about the programs and how to become potential leaders.

III. Encourage Mentor Programs: A mentor is an advisor or friend that is willing to offer guidance to another individual. When a mentor is assigned, the individual, the mentor and the organization gain.

IV. Develop New Activities and Resources: In order for the leadership to be effective, we must explore and put into place new activities and research new resources. It is vital that we teach and train our members in order to have strong leaders. We must develop leadership programs and activities to attract and educate Junior members, as they are our future leaders.

Programs and Activities

1. Past officers and chairmen can mentor current/new officers and chairmen. Seasoned members can mentor new members. Pair past and current officers and chairmen, so they can share information with each other and offer support. 2. Encourage each unit member to take the Senior Leadership Correspondence Course. 3. Take advantage of the Department’s mini-Leadership topic offered in the monthly Department of Mississippi newsletter. Share at your Unit meetings.

1 Department Emphasis for 2009-2010:

For the 2009-2010 Dept. of Mississippi administrative year, we ask all unit Leadership Chairmen to encourage unit members to take the Senior Membership Correspondence Course (there’s a course for juniors, too). The course is located online at www.legion-aux.org (click on Current Member; go to Programs and use pull down bar to go to Leadership; click on Resources). Not only will our members learn more about the aims and purposes of the American Legion Auxiliary through the study course, they will grow to appreciate how our organization became a national leader in service to others. It is our goal in the Department to work together statewide and produce many graduates of the correspondence course. When a member completes and passes the correspondence course, please inform the Dept. Leadership Chairman immediately.

WATCH FOR THE DEPARTMENT NEWSLETTER! Each month, the Department Chairman will include a mini-leadership course topic in the Department newsletter, with the hope that each unit Leadership Chairman will share that program at the next unit meeting. Your Unit President receives the newsletter, so be sure to ask her for a copy of the Leadership Program article.
