COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduction to African-American Studies (3) Interdisciplinary exploration of salient issues in the black experience and the role of African-Americans in the development of American culture from 1619 to the present.

OBJECTIVES • To gain a better understanding of the social, political and psychological consequences and ramifications of “being black” in American society • To provide a foundational perspective from which to interpret other courses in the Africana Studies minor • To learn how to appreciate the sometimes contradictory popular and academic approaches to explore black culture
