Physical education syllabus

Course Description: The following activities are included in the physical education at Roybal Learning Center. Each activity is broken up into 4 week units. o Basketball Soccer Volleyball Flag Football Weight Training o Softball Fitnessgram Preparation Ultimate Frisbee Hockey o At the beginning of each class period all students will be engaged in a basic warm-up/conditioning program including exercises designed to stretch and strengthen each muscle group.

Standards: Upon graduation from LAUSD, students will be able to: o Demonstrate knowledge of and competency in motor skills, movement patterns, and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities. o Achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles, and strategies. o Demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

Grading: Every day a student will earn 5 points. To earn all five points the student must be on time, properly dressed, and must participate in the day’s activities. Grades will be based on a 100% grading scale as follows: 100-90% A 89-80% B 79-70 C 69-60% D 59% or less Fail

Uniform Requirement: All boys and girls will wear the school issued uniform: cranberry ROYBAL P.E. shirt, black shorts, tennis shoes, and socks. *** During cold weather, any student who wishes to wear sweatpants and/or sweater must wear the Roybal issued ones. ****

Health Issues: To be excused from class activity a student must present a doctor’s note or a note from the school nurse. Even if a student is excused from class activities, he/she must dress in the P.E. uniform to earn his/her daily points. Physical activity can be modified for any student once their medical condition is filed with the school nurse and P.E. teacher. Summative Assessments/Benchmark Assignments/Assessments: During the semester students will be tested twice and will be graded according to scale:

Folder: Every student will be asked to have a 3 pronged portfolio/folder for P.E. Students will have homework once a week and will be expected to turn in homework in their folder. Homework out of folder will not be accepted.

Behavioral Expectations: o Students should be able to come into locker room on time, dress quickly, and respect facilities, staff, and fellow classmates. o Students should be to come into gym on time and sit properly in assigned spot. o During warm-up exercises students should keep their shirts tucked in, shorts pulled up to waist, and perform all exercises in a correct manner without talking. o Students should be able to participate in all class activities to the best of their individual abilities.
