Multicultural Projects EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS

EXAMPLE 1

A woman’s association and a number of cultural groups jointly initiate a project to develop the association’s capacity to engage with migrant and refugee women from different cultural backgrounds through involving the association’s existing membership and women from culturally diverse backgrounds to explore each other’s stories, skills and knowledge. Through project activities, possible outcomes could be:  migrant and refugee women feel welcome and accepted and have the opportunity to make new friends  the association improves their program with participation from a diverse membership  migrant and refugee women choose to participate in regular activities of the association  the association improves their capability, knowledge, skills and diversity to increase their support to the community  migrant and refugee women gain and build confidence through sharing their culture and stories  the association increases their membership and profile in the wider community by recognising the various contributions made by migrant and refugee women.

EXAMPLE 2

A cultural group partners with a local club to equip their senior members with skills and knowledge in the area of information technology. Senior members will be trained in the use of IT including computers, and gadgets such as iPhones, iPads and other devices. Through project activities, possible outcomes could be:

 improved relations members between members of the local club and cultural group  the local club has improved capacity and skills to engage with people from a culturally diverse community, and raised its profile in the multicultural community  senior members benefited through gaining confidence and improving their knowledge and skills in the use of information technology  members of the cultural group will participate in the activities deliver by the local club, which will increase their profile to the wider community. EXAMPLE 3

A local club engages young people from different cultural backgrounds in some of the established programs delivered by the local club including a Youth Leadership and Enrichment program. With this program, the local club assists young people to develop as aspiring leaders, including problem solving and public speaking activities. Through project activities, possible outcomes could be:  young people feel accepted with an increased sense of belonging  the club improves their capacity and skills to engage with people from culturally diverse communities  young people attain strengthened leadership, communication and problem solving skills  the club increases program outcomes with participation from a diverse range of young people  young people increase their interaction, awareness and understanding across cultural groups  the local club increases its diversity and appeal to a broader range of communities.

EXAMPLE 4

A community organisation that delivers support services for migrants and refugees initiates a project with a local club to provide its members with the opportunity to gain volunteering experience. The community organisation refers a number of their migrant and refugee clients to obtain volunteer experience through supporting the delivery of project activities undertaken by the local club. Through project activities, possible outcomes could be:

 participating migrants and refugees have the opportunity to build their confidence and their communication skills  members of the local club increase their knowledge about cultural diversity  migrant and refugee clients of the community organisation increase their interaction with the wider community, which will increase their sense of belonging  the club receives additional support from culturally diverse volunteers in delivering their activities  migrant and refugee clients of the community organisation have the opportunity to make new friends  the local club increases their capacity and skills to engage with migrants and refugees from culturally diverse communities, which in turn, enhances community participation by migrants and refugees and reduces social isolation.
