American History 11th Grade Syllabus 2014-15 Mrs. Montague Room #533

The purpose of this course is to provide you with a working knowledge of the events of the past. With that knowledge you will be able to openly discuss how the events of the past have shaped the country and culture we now have today. You will also gain individual insight into how these events directly affect YOU! Contact Information: [email protected]; 407-905-5500 ext. #6002533

Text: Florida United States History and Geography Modern Times, 2013. (You will have online access, too!) Gateway to U.S. History: The Bridge to Success on Florida’s EOC Test, 2014

Technology: We will also be using Edmodo for assignments and discussions. If you do not have an account yet please sign up at http://ocps.edmodo.com/. Edmodo can best be described as Facebook for school. We will be operating under the OCPS subdomain. This means all district policies and code of conduct regarding electronic use will be enforced. You will receive from me a group code for your class, followed by training and instructions for use. Parents will also receive a code just like they get for Progress Book. If you have a smartphone, IPod Touch, IPad, or tablet, “There is an app for that!” We will also be using Remind, for one way mass text reminders.

Required Materials: There will be a class set of books with the option to check out a book from me when desired. You will need a spiral notebook college rule or a space in binder with paper, small binder or section in larger binder to keep handouts. We will use the following materials in our class: sticky notes, a highlighter, pen or pencil, coloring materials (markers, pencils, crayons), and a glue stick/tape. You will need to have these items with you in class so please come prepared! Additionally, as part of AHS policy this year, you will be required to maintain a Student Portfolio throughout the year. I will provide your Portfolio (manila file folder), and it will remain inside the classroom.

Student absences: Student absences are recorded by the teacher as unexcused. Please note Apopka’s new rules on unexcused absences: If you miss a test day due to an unexcused absence, you will take the original test the day you return but you may not complete test corrections. Additionally if you miss a school day due to an unexcused absence, you may not complete the class assignment(s) you missed. Please refer to your handbook for further information.

Tardy Policy Apopka High School tardy policy will be enforced. You must physically be inside the classroom when the bell rings to be considered not tardy. Please note Apopka’s new tardy policy. It is the teacher’s responsibility to track student tardies. After the second tardy to the class, the student will begin receiving Apopka’s designated punishments. Please refer to your handbook for further information.

Assignments: It is your responsibility to come to class prepared every day. Part of coming to class prepared means that you have your assignments completed and are ready to participate. There is an online component to our new textbook and you will be given online assignments. There will be ample time to complete online assignments. If you have any problems with access to the Internet, please see me so that I may assist you.

Late Assignments: An assignment that is to be submitted during the time in which the student is not in a classroom due to an unexcused tardy or an unexcused absence will not be accepted. If a student is tardy or absent for an excused reason, the missed assignments will be accepted in accordance with the OCPS attendance policy. Late assignments must be completed and turned in within three days of the due date and will be assessed a maximum penalty of 30% off the earned grade. No late work will be accepted once we have tested. In order to be successful, you must complete all the work. You cannot pick and choose assignments and expect to pass. Each assignment is an important part to the content we are learning. I expect quality work from each student: simply handing in assignments, poorly done, is not acceptable. If you are having trouble with an assignment, talk to me and together we will find a way to help you be successful.

Academic Honesty: ALL academic work is expected to be the legitimate, truthful work of each student. First offense for copying/sharing class work or homework will be sharing the grade (example: assignment is worth 20 points, 10 points each to the 2 students involved) and parent contact. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Cheating or plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment, parent contact, a disciplinary referral and a loss of respect. Please note that those students who allow others to copy their work are equally guilty of cheating and will receive equal consequences.

AHS/Orange County Grading Rubric: 100-90 = A 89-80 = B 79-70 = C  2.0 GPA is necessary to graduate. 69-60 = D 59-50 = F Grading System: We will be using a weighted system for grading:

Assignments 20% Each assignment will demonstrate evidence of learning and is worth points. The more difficult or time consuming the assignment, the more points the assignment is worth (10-25pts).

Assessments 80% This includes all standards-based assessments: quizzes (5-10 questions) and chapter tests (20-30 questions). See below regarding retakes/test corrections. This category also includes products: projects, essays, basically items that take longer, have a fixed due date, and have a detailed rubric.

*You will be taking the state End-of-Course Exam during the first two weeks of May. New state mandates require that the test is to be calculated as 30% of one’s final grade.

Test Corrections/Retake Policy: After remediation (i.e. tutoring/re-teaching with any U.S. History teacher, MTSS, or Student Success Center session) to enhance learning, students will be given an additional opportunity to demonstrate mastery and subsequently can better their scores by completing test corrections (in the correct format) within one week of the test being returned. The maximum grade one can achieve completing test corrections is an 80%. For a few key assessments there may be a retake offered instead of corrections. If you show mastery of the standard(s) on a later benchmark test in the same marking period, the highest score may replace the lower score. If a student misses an initial assessment due to an unexcused tardy or absence the student will be required to take the initial assessment however a retake will not be offered. A student who is absent the day before a test will still be required to take the test on the assigned day.
