Wednesday:

St Helen’s Wednesday Friendship Club. We meet every other Wednesday, except during August and costs £1.50. Our meeting lasts for 2 hours starting at 2pm but lunch is available at 12.30 costing £3.50 and must be pre-booked through the church office. We have a speaker who will talk on a subject which we hope will interest most people, and we finish the meeting with a quiz or other item of interest. We have a meal and entertainment at Christmas and local theatre trips throughout the year. Programme of activities and events available from the church office. Silver surfer sessions. Confused about computers? You are not alone! So come for a lesson at our weekly sessions where volunteers will gentle guide you through how to use a computer. Why not bring a friend and share the experience? Every Wednesday afternoon at the Helpful Bureau 39-41 Church Street Stapleford. Haven Eagles The Haven Eagles is a free club for the over 50’s. It is an opportunity for tea £1 per drink), chat and fellowship with opportunities for outings and making new friends. Autumn Years Activities and Lunch Club.

3 Starting at 10.00 with Movement to music: Gentle exercises to music for the over 55’s St Helen’s Church Hall, Frederick Road, Stapleford. Thursday mornings from 10.00am-11.00am Cost: £3 per session with refreshments provided.

This is then followed by: A hot two-course lunch is served at 12:30pm. After lunch we have activities such as quizzes, bingo and raffles. Advice and information is available throughout the session. Cost: Lunch is £4.50 and tea and coffee is 50p.

Throughout the day we offer complementary therapies, nail trimming, topical speakers, information, presentations, arts and crafts, health and fitness, games, day trips, shopping trips, lunch and much more. We also offer a full personal needs assessment aimed at helping you to remain independent at home. Our community outreach Advisor can visit you at home, as many times as you like, at a time that is convenient to you to discuss your needs. Come along for all or just part of the day!

“Dig In” – Stapleford’s community allotment. Community allotment in Stapleford at Albany allotments, run by and for the local people who like growing fruit and veg. and like eating it even more! Occasional horticultural workshops, regular on-site “cook and eat” sessions and various trips and outings. It’s completely free; all materials provided for use on site. Age Concern Chilwell For people living in the Attenborough and Chilwell areas. General chat, dominoes, cards, magazines, bingo quizzes and talks. Occasional outings such as coach trips and guest speakers. We hold special events for Christmas, Easter and Harvest Festival. Lunch is provided and transport arranged via voluntary drivers. Beeston Probus Club A club for retired men to meet and share ideas and listen to speakers on a variety of subjects. We also have outings and lunches. The club meets on the third Monday in every month at 10:00am until 12 noon at the Beeston Methodist Church, Chilwell Road, Beeston. There is an annual subscription but we invite men to come along to a meeting or two before deciding whether to join. Community Walk Meet up at the Greenwood Community Centre to join in with an organised walk, travelling by car to the starting point, this walk is organised so those needing shorter walks are able to follow one route whilst those wanting more of a challenge can follow a longer one, with everyone meeting up for refreshments after. Tuesday:

The Oasis Luncheon club We meet for a midday meal at the Oasis Christian Centre, entry from the union street door. We start to serve a three course dinner at 12:15. Membership is by application. A minimum age restriction applies. All helpers are Christian and volunteer their time to help prepare and serve the meal. Attenborough Friendship Group We have quizzes, speakers, teas and outings. This enables the elderly to get out of their homes and enjoy the company of other people. Over 60’s art group Run by Age UK this art group is open to all levels of experience or skill. Held at the community room in Toton Tesco (near the café) from 2:15-4:15pm. This activity is free to take part in, just show up on the day, but we do need to pay for insurance for which we ask for a contribution once a year. Carers support group Run by the carers hub this is a chance for carers to come and meet with their peers and professionals who can help support you in your caring life. There are support workers and specialist speakers who come as well as activities to keep your mind occupied. Thursday: 9 Men in Sheds This project is aimed at supporting older men who want to get together and share and learn new skills in the welcoming space of a “shed”. The caretaking team will provide the “shed”, tools, materials equipment and practical support. There is currently no cost for this activity which is held at The Middle Street Resource Centre between 10.15am and 12.45pm. Beeston Memory Café The café is a safe, friendly venue where folk with dementia and those who support them can meet. Mindset Voice Hearers Group Are you a sufferer of Schizo-affective disorder or Paranoia? Have you experienced psychosis ? If the answer is “YES”, we have a monthly support group which runs from 2.30-4.00pm. 10 Mindset Cinema Club Come and join us for a night with the stars! We show a wide variety films on our large projector in both 2d and 3d every other Friday at the Beeston Resource Centre, Middle Street, Beeston between 12.30 and 4.00pm. Beeston University of the Third Age. U3A is an autonomous self-funding co-operative of older people which enables members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities. All members can take from it what they want, and give to it what they can contribute. Members, through sharing their knowledge, skills and experience, learn from each other, meet new people, make new friends and expand their world. Members drive the organisation and activities and this gives us great freedom and independence to provide what YOU, the members, want. The Open Meeting is held monthly, at 10.00am on the first Thursday of each month at Chilwell Road Methodist Church, Chilwell Road, Beeston. There will normally be a guest speaker, and an opportunity to find out about the Interest Groups that are available to members. Refreshments are provided and you can chat to other members and learn all about the organisation. We also publish a newsletter which gives this information and copies are also available on this site. The annual subscription is currently £15. In addition each interest group has to be self financing and therefore, depending on the activity, there may be a small charge per session to cover room hire and any other relevant costs or expenses of that group. A vintage tea parlour – coffee morning Open to all, we are open every Friday 10.00am-3.00pm at Oban House, Chilwell Road Beeston. Homemade cake and tea/coffee for £2, tea and toast for £1.50 and a freshly made sandwich or toasted sandwich for £2. Activity morning An activity morning for the young at heart! Held every Friday morning at 9.30-12.30 at Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre. A leisure card is required to access facilities however if you are over 65 and have a state pension you can have a free concessionary card, just bring ID with you such as your bus pass. The cost of the session is £3.85 per hour which includes Low impact body conditioning or table tennis. Awsworth Activities Group Held at Awsworth Village hall from 11am-12.30pm. Come along for the whole session or just a part of it. Various activities are available which include: Reminiscences group – please feel free to bring along any memorabilia of past times to share. Games – such as scrabble, dominoes, cards etc. Movement to music – a gentle exercise class for the over 55’s which starts at 11.00am. Cost: Movement to music £3. Refreshments are free. Trowell Woman’s Institute Ladies Choir The Choir was formed in 1970 and has always had non-WI members. We are a very friendly, lively group of about 18 ladies who enjoy singing. We entertain at local Care homes and some other events (sometimes WI) with a mix of light popular songs and the odd comedy sketch. We practice on Monday nights 7.30 to 9pm at the Church Hall, Nottingham Rd, Trowell from the first Monday in September to the end of June. We welcome any ladies who would like to come along to see what we do and think about joining us. There are no auditions and it is not necessary to read music – you will probably know the songs anyway. Trowell Women’s Institute The Woman’s Institute offers women the opportunity of sharing friendship and learning, to help widen their horizons and together influence local, national and international affairs. We are an active, flourishing and welcoming group, with a broad range of ages, backgrounds and interests. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month (except August) from 7.30pm in the Parish Hall. We normally have a guest to entertain us and all meetings except the Christmas and Birthday Parties are open to visitors. We also go on outings such as coach trips, walks and concerts. Trowell Women’s Institute Darts We have darts social evenings with other WI’s and friends from the area. Everyone can have a game and we all enjoy the fun, whether we can hit the board or not. Friday:

St Helen’s Community Luncheon Club. A 2 course lunch is served every Friday at St Helen’s Church Hall, Nottingham Road, Trowell, except summer, Easter and Christmas school holidays, for people aged over 55 years who live in the local area. The meal is cooked and served on the premises by trained volunteer staff. Guests are welcomed with a hot drink from 11.30am and lunch is served at 12 noon. Another hot drink is available after the meal. A charge of £3 applies, and we are a non-profit making organisation. Craft n Chat This group meets at 2pm every third Monday each month at St Mary’s Church, Church Street, Eastwood. Meet with others to make craft items using various skills: knitting, crochet, cardmaking, jewellery making etc. Have a nice cup of tea, relax and chat whilst making your craft item. Items produced by our Craft n Chat group are usually sold for profit at church fund raising events. Although we are a group of ladies at the present time, our Craft n Chat group is not an exclusive club and everyone is welcome - men included! Bowling in Broxtowe Do you enjoy spending time outdoors, keeping fit and meeting new people? Why not try outdoor bowling? It’s fun and enjoyable, suitable for all ages and abilities; no previous experience or equipment is necessary and there is the potential to join a bowls club and play matches. There are six bowling greens managed by Broxtowe Borough Council. Beeston - Broadgate Recreation Ground, Broadgate Beeston Fields Recreation Ground, Central Avenue Chilwell - Inham Nook Recreation Ground,Pearson Avenue Stapleford - Hickings Lane Recreation Ground, Hickings Lane Queen Elizabeth Park, Toton Lane Toton - Manor Farm Recreation Ground, Toton Lane Bowling can be enjoyed during the months of May to September on our outdoor greens. They are open seven days a week from 10.30 a.m. in the morning until dusk with the exception of Thursday mornings when the greens are closed for essential maintenance. An attendant is available on site during these periods. Exercise For Health Referrals and Cardiac Rehabilitation in Broxtowe Broxtowe Borough Council are helping Broxtowe residents to get fit and active, by offering leisure and physical activity opportunities to in-active patients when recommended by their GP or Health Professional.

Patients can be recommended to Leisure Services for a Health and Fitness Membership or to Broxtowe Sport for a variety of community based physical activity sessions.

Health and Fitness Memberships

Patients can take out a Vitality Health and Fitness Membership at one of the three Leisure Centres within Broxtowe:

 Bramcote Leisure Centre  Kimberley Leisure Centre  Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre

Customers will receive a gym induction as part of the membership. A tailored 1-2-1 exercise programme designed with a fully qualified Fitness Advisor is also available to help prepare patients for their journey of independent exercise. Following the gym induction each patient will be free to exercise at their own convenience. Qualified staff will be available to offer advice when needed.

Memberships for the Exercise for Health Scheme are offered at a substantially discounted rate to help individuals achieve their goals.

Community Based Physical Activity Sessions

Broxtowe Sport offer and have links to a variety of sports and physical activity sessions across the Borough of Broxtowe led by qualified instructors and volunteers. There are opportunities suitable for pregnant women, new mums, older adults, people with disabilities and people new to exercise. Activities take place at a number of venues across the Borough of Broxtowe throughout the week. Opportunities can be selected to suit the individual.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Heartbeats is a network of exercise sessions throughout Broxtowe, suitable for people with diagnosed heart problems who would like to be more active.

Heartbeats is open to patients through referral by hospital and community cardiac rehabilitation teams. Referrals are also accepted by other Health Care Professionals such as Cardiac Rehab Nurses, GP's and Heart Failure Nurses.

The BACPR Instructors

Our BACPR Instructors have all successfully completed the British Association of Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) Specialist Exercise Instructor Level 4 Cardiac Qualification.

The Referral Process

Patients with the following cardiac conditions can be referred to Heartbeats:

 Myocardial Infarction  Percutaneous Coronary Intervention  Cononary Artery Bypass Grafting  Aortic or Mitral Valve Replacement or Repair  Stable Angina  Heart Transplant  Heart Failure  Cardiomyopathy  Arrhythmia and or implantable Devices

Patients must also be;

 Clinically stable prior to the event 21  Motivated to attend the sessions  Able to exercise Independently and safely

Referral Method

After completing a phase 3 programme, patients should be informed of the exercise opportunities available to them in order to continue with their rehabilitation. For patients wishing to continue with exercise a BACPR form is required.

Once we receive the referral form (http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx? id=31830&p=0), we will contact the the patient within three weeks, to arrange an induction at either Bramcote Leisure Centre or Kimberley Leisure Centre.

Induction

The initial session for each participant will include:

 An explanation of how the sessions run  Checking referral details  Appraisal of cardiac and non-cardiac risk factors  Physical assessment  Reminder of the use of the Borg Scale  Goal setting  Answering any questions or concerns

Cost of the Sessions

Duration of the Programme

On-going assessments by the BACPR instructor will access the readiness of the patient to move into mainstream leisure activities. It is expected that the maximum length of time a participant will spend on the programme is six months.

Opportunities to Exercise After the Programme

Thursday 26 The People’s Choir The aim of the choir is to promote health and well-being through the joy of singing though the ability to sing is not required! The choir is held at Royal Concert Hall on Thursdays 1pm-2.30pm and is open to all, with people attending who have memory issues plus others with mental health issues, physical disabilities and learning disabilities. We sometimes have to change venue if the concert hall is unable to accommodate us but we do tell people when this will be happening and we always ensure the replacement venue is appropriate for our needs including having disabled access. There is a small cost for the Peoples Choir of £2 per week and free refreshments are available. There are no auditions and you don’t need to be able to read music; we are a very informal, relaxed group. If people have specific needs or require support we ask that their support worker attends but we do have the support of an ex-mental health nurse who comes to all the sessions. The best foot forward scheme

28 Best Foot Forward is a weekly programme of free guided health walks in open spaces around Nottingham, funded by Nottingham City Council. For each walk there are two walk leaders present, one leads from the front and the other follows at the back of the group, this enables all walkers to find their own pace. Best Foot Forward is accredited to walking for health. Anyone can join the walks but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and we do not allow dogs or smoking on any of our walks. Strelley Woodland & Countryside Walk Taking in the stones of Monks Way, Strelley Hall and All Saints Church. A path through Oldmoor Wood takes us into open fields, before continuing up Catstone Hill to the underground reservoir. Meeting place: Broad Oak Public House, Strelley Village at 10am Grade: Moderate to hard Walk length: 4 miles Duration: 90 minutes Terrain: Open fields and hilly at times This walk runs on the 1st Weds of each month

Forrest and Arboretum Walk A varied walk around the Forest following established pathways, with extensive views of the city from the lovely wooded areas. Leading to a walk around the Arboretum. Grade: Easy to Moderate. Walk length: between 1.5 and 3 miles. Duration: 40 – 90 minutes. Terrain: Wooded areas. Meeting point: 10.15am inside the Mary Potter Centre (near the City Homes Desk on the ground floor), Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham NG7 5JD.

Wollaton Park Walk A number of pleasant walking routes in Wollaton Park, with its 16th Century Hall, lake and deer park. Old Basford Walk 30 A flat walk with benches at intervals. Lots of interesting wildlife can be found along the way. Meeting place: The Garage on Mill Street at 10.30am. The men in sheds scheme

31 Men in Sheds is a project that supports older men who want to get together to share and learn new wood-working skills. Age UK Notts provides the ‘shed’ – a workshop, tools and equipment and a co-ordinator for support. But the day-to-day running of the shed is left to the shed members who choose the activities they want to participate in. Shed members come from a wide variety of backgrounds ranging from highly skilled to beginners. All work together and there is a role for everyone. Members can put their skills to good use, share their knowledge, learn new skills and put the world to rights over a cup of tea. The products produced by the shed members are sold to help support the Men in Sheds project.

We provide professional and personal care to support elders and give valuable respite to carers. What can I expect on a typical day in Elders Daycare? On arrival we provide tea/coffee and refreshments as well as a 2 course hot midday meal. Then during the day some of our activities are: Arts and crafts (daily) Gentle Exercise Cards Bingo Computer training on request (internet linked) As well as this, we have regular visitors to the centre who do activities such as movement to music, entertainment and information sharing along with regular outings for lunches or a full day out. We can also support with bathing and hairdressing services. Whilst elders are in our care we aim to: Help keep their independence whilst giving valuable respite to carers Keep them active and stimulated Keep them in touch with the community Help them feel part of a warm and friendly environment. What services do you provide? At lunchtime we provide a nourishing meal with refreshments and we will fulfil any specific requests with regards to dietary needs. We can arrange transport to the centre for those living nearby (NG7/NG8 area) We receive referrals from Adult Services, GPs, health services and families. We offer person-centred care that seeks to enhance the choice and independence of older people. The centre is equipped to support people who are physically frail, have dementia or a disability and offer supported services such as hairdressing and bathing. Sybil Levin provides a range of stimulating activities, day trips, nourishing hot meals and door-to- door transport to improve the wellbeing of the older person.
