BTEC First Is 3/4 Coursework. You Will Also Do an Exam That Counts As

Congratulations you have started Level 2 BTEC in Principles of Applied Science. This is a brief guide to BTEC Applied Science at our school.

BTEC First is 3/4 coursework. You will also do an exam that counts as ¼.

Your teacher will do everything they can to help you gain a pass but you must be responsible for your learning and develop skills of organisation and time management. Catch up sessions are available with Ms Marshall on ______(S10/S15)

In order to be successful you must:

 Attend all lessons  Quote all sources (next to where they were used)  Catch up on any work missed and discuss absences with your teacher  Ensure that you sign and date all front sheets  Ensure that you quote all sources  Ensure that no work is “plagiarised” (Speak to your teacher if you do not know what this means)

I have read and understood this

Name:______Date______Presenting your work Methods of assessment may include (amongst others!)

Presentations Podcasts Video recording Diaries Vodcasts Role play Recorded discussions Reports Photo diary Poster Brochures Personal statement Performances Mind Map Observation records Leaflets Investigation write ups Witness statements Case studies Annotated photographs Models Work Experience Evidence

How you present your work is up to you. You should decide what fits the task best and discuss this with your teacher. The most important thing is that it meets the criteria and you keep a record of what you did. Quoting sources It is important that the work you do is your own and that you do not claim another persons’ work as yours.

To avoid problems: List all the books you used to help you and page numbers where possible Give the exact websites that you used (just writing google is not enough – write where google sent you) – try to do this in footnotes (Press references, then insert footnote with the cursor next to the sentence/paragraph that you wish to reference) If you use diagrams say where you got them from Homework http://ivoappliedscience.wikispaces.com/ This website will contain H/w and activities, your teacher will advise you what to do.

This also means that you have an opportunity to develop independent learning and thinking skills. You may also like to use what you have learned in other subjects: e.g Geography will help when you do tectonic plates when studying the Earth and Atmosphere. PE will help when we study health.

Acting on feedback Your teacher will give you feedback verbally and on your work. You will be given one opportunity to improve your work (discuss with your teacher the deadline for this and write it down). It is important you make the most of this opportunity and meet the deadline set in order to pass.

Using ICT suites We will try to get you into a computer suite as often as we can so that you can do some research. This is however a privilege and rules apply. If this is abused (e.g. students play games, print without permission etc) then you will no longer have access.

You must ensure that you save regularly in your own area. It is your responsibility to keep a back up of coursework, if it goes missing you may be asked to repeat the work. Key materials of use (copies of task sheets etc) will be stored in X:\Science\Pupils Work Area\BTEC http://ivoappliedscience.wikispaces.com/ Organising your work You will be given a folder to store your work. Completed work will be removed by the teacher for safe storage at appropriate points. It is your responsibility to ensure that your folder is kept organised – if your teacher is not happy with your folder it will not be marked. Try to use front sheets and treasury tags/plastic wallets to keep work together. You must not lose any paperwork that your teacher adds to your folder.

Deadlines These will be set by your teacher. You need to record these on the booklets.
