24th ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL 4-20 July 2017

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), the 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival will be realised under the sponsorship of Garanti Bank for the 20th time this year. The 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival will host leading names and new discoveries from the world of jazz as well as the stars of contemporary music. The festival will feature more than 200 names in 20 different venues around Istanbul between 4-20 July 2017.

The 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival will offer a festival experience full of discoveries between 4-20 July with more than 50 concerts including veterans and new discoveries of jazz, well-known ensembles of world music, new horizons of contemporary music. The festival programme includes a range of jazz, funk, world music, blues and rock performances, with highlights including “Beyond The Memory” concert where famous stars will pay tribute to the cult flamenco guitarist and composer Paco De Lucia, the young star of vocal jazz Kandance Springs, masters Jacky Terrasson & Stephane Belmondo, one of the legendary names of European jazz Nik Bärtsch, and two delightful voices from Africa Fatoumata Diawara and Hindi Zahra. The "JUNUN" project, which had been initially led by Radiohead's guitarist Jonny Greenwood, is among the guests of this year's festival.

This year's festival will feature a remarkable innovation titled “ViTRin”: Showcase for Contemporary Music from Turkey which aims to focus on the successful musicians and ensembles of the local scene, for a wider outreach with the support of SOCAR Turkey. ViTRin will include several festival concerts from 5 through 8 July and will be open to the festival audience as well as leading representatives of the international music industry.

The music marathon “Night Out” and the free of charge, open air event “Jazz in the Parks" will be held on the Asian side of Istanbul as part of the festival programme. The festival will feature “A Childlike Day”, a special event that includes performances and workshops for children.

24TH ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESS CONFERENCE The programme of the 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival was announced at a press conference held on the evening of Tuesday, 28 March at Zorlu PSM, the Festival’s “Venue Sponsor with the Highest Contribution”. Speakers of the conference were Chairman of the Board of İKSV Bülent Eczacıbaşı, President & CEO of Garanti Bank Fuat Erbil, Director of the Istanbul Jazz Festival Pelin Opcin, and Assistant Director of the Istanbul Jazz Festival Harun İzer.

Chairman of İKSV Bülent Eczacıbaşı said, “İKSV is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2017. We hope that this year, just as in the past 45, our festival program will create opportunities for discovery, new ideas and experiences, positive emotions, and personal renewal in the commotion of daily life. We expect the 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival, which will offer more than 20 concerts between July 4th and July 20th, to enrich the lives of the tens of thousands of people who attend these events while further advancing the cultural life of our city. As the previous years, I once more wish you a successful and enjoyable Jazz Festival.” In his speech, Erbil also announced that by taking inspiration from the idea of “Culture&Art Card” that İKSV has presented to 1.000 university students at its 45th year, Garanti Caz Yeşili brand will also be giving 100 university couples a free entrance to a concert that they prefer at the festival. The winners will be drawn from among the applicants who give the right answer to the question that will be asked on social media as a part of the competition. The travel and accommodation expenses for the winners living outside Istanbul will also be covered by Garanti Bank.

Director of the Istanbul Jazz Festival Pelin Opcin and the Assistant Director Harun İzer presented the festival programme and events. At the press conference, which was also attended by well-known jazz musicians from Turkey, the thirteen year old young jazz pianist Hakan Başar performed with his trio.

SONGS WILL SPEAK THROUGH THE 24TH ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL POSTERS The 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival's promotional campaign developed by Alametifarika is an open-hearted invitation to the festival, taking inspiration from the unifying power of songs. Festival posters include the hopeful and embracing lyrics in many different languages by guests from the Istanbul Jazz Festival such as Nile Rodgers, Özdemir Erdoğan, Mercedes Sosa, Jane Birkin, Aynur Doğan, Eleftheria Arvanitaki and Mahsa Vahdat. Through the words of these artists, festival posters also refer to various moments from the twenty-four year history of the festival.

DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES IN DIVERSE VENUES The 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival concerts will be held in different locations of the city, continuing to provide a whole new concert experience to the music lovers by turning unconventional spots into concert venues. Among the 20 venues that will host the festival this year are the enchanting The Marmara Esma Sultan Mansion, which returns as a festival venue after a short break. The lush garden of the French Palace in Beyoğlu, the historical Sultan Park area of Swissôtel The Bosphorus and with its Cote d’Azur-like atmosphere the Panorama Terrace of The Grand Tarabya, will also serve as festival venues for the first time.

Other festival venues include Beykoz Kundura, Fenerbahçe Khalkedon, Austrian Cultural Office Garden, Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Salon İKSV, Uniq Open-Air Theatre, Zorlu PSM Main Theatre and Zorlu PSM Drama Theatre. Night Out programme will take place in Kadıköy’s most beloved venues All Saints Moda Church, Club Quartier, Dorock XL, Kadıköy Sahne, KargART, Living Room, Moda Sahnesi and Zor.

FESTIVAL TICKETS TO GO ON SALE ON MONDAY, 3 APRIL Tickets for the 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival go on sale on Monday, 3 April at 10:30 and are available from Biletix sales points, and also from the İKSV main box office (every day from 10:00-18:00 except Sundays) where there is no service charge. As well as full-priced tickets, discounted tickets for students are available for all concerts.

Tulip Card holders receive special discounts of up to 25% on tickets. Pre-sales for Black and White Tulip Cardholders will be on 30 March, and for Red and Yellow Tulip Cardholders on 31 March, 1 and 2 April.

FESTIVAL’S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS The 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Kamil Özler, the conductor of TRT Big Band, and Fatih Erkoç, one of the veteran names of Turkish pop and jazz music.

Kamil Özler entered the State Conservatory of Turkish Music in 1977. There, he studied clarinet with Tülay Örser; Turkish music and jazz with Yavuz Özustün; and harmony with Demirhan Altuğ. He also took classes about modern harmony, arrangement and orchestration from Berklee College of Music. Özler, who continues working at the TRT Big Band since 1982, also teaches solfege, harmony, orchestration and guitar at İTÜ State Conservatory and Bilgi University. Özler is also a guitar and clarinet virtuoso, who is known for his successful composition arrangements. He is also the author of a training book called "Clarinet Technique". Fatih Erkoç’s first encounter with music was when his father Hasan Erkoç, who is an oud player, gave him a violin as a gift at the age of three. He studied trombone, piano and bass for seven years at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory. Erkoç started to work in İstanbul Gelişim, one of the most popular orchestras of the period before graduating and also worked at the İstanbul State Symphony Orchestra as a short term trombone player. Returning from Norway in 1986 after living there for 11 years, Erkoç won the first prize at the 1st Golden Pigeon Song Contest in Kuşadası for his song "Yol Verin A Dostlar”. He also produced a music programme called "Yankılar" for TRT. Throughout the 90s Fatih Erkoç has become one of the unforgettable figures of pop music with his albums Ellerim Bomboş (1992), Penceremden Gökyüzüne (1993), Sana Deliyim (1994), and Kardelen (1996). After a six-year break that followed his latest album of 1999, the artist released Beklenen in 2005. In 2007, Fatih Erkoç released Kör Randevu in which he performed some of his most popular songs with new arrangements.

A BRAND NEW CONCERT SERIES BY THE ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL: “VİTRİN”: SHOWCASE FOR CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FROM TURKEY 5-8 July 2017

“ViTRin”: Showcase for Contemporary Music from Turkey will be held for the first time this year under the sponsorship of SOCAR Turkey. The series will focus on the successful musicians and ensembles of the local scene and will aim to provide them with a new opportunity to reach a wider international audience. The series will feature more than 30 successful contemporary music and jazz artists and ensembles from Turkey. The concerts, to be held between 5-8 July, will be attended by prominent representatives of the international music industry, in addition to the festival audience.

“ViTRin”: Showcase for Contemporary Music from Turkey, which builds on the objective of promoting the cultural values of our country and enhancing the intercultural dialogue, was developed as a project that focuses on jazz and contemporary music. The rapid development of music production in Turkey and the multitude of recently emerging musicians lead to new projects not only in Turkey but also in the international arena, receiving great interest and demand. This productive environment in the local music industry has motivated the Istanbul Jazz Festival, to offer an effective international platform for emerging artists. "ViTRin", which takes its inspiration from similar international showcase events, is aimed to become an event that embraces the musical productions in our country as well as countries in nearby geography and promotes them to contribute to the universal culture and art.

More than 30 artists and ensembles from Turkey will be featured in the concerts that will take place between 5 and 8 July at the festival within the scope of "ViTRİN". In parallel with these concerts, Turkey's contemporary music scene will be introduced to the international participants with panels and seminars. The sectoral meetings to be held will bring local and foreign music professionals together and establish relations that will encourage local artists to reach out to the international arena. One of the projects planned to be realised under "ViTRin" will be to support the international concerts of artists by creating a structure that will support the international tours of the artists and bands participating in the programme.

“ ViTRin” showcase will feature concerts of Hüsnü Şenlendirici, İsmail Tunçbilek and Aytaç Doğan together as Taksim Trio, Ceylan Ertem who has reached wide audiences from alternative to pop music with her five albums, Turkey's rare fretless guitar virtuoso Cenk Erdoğan, jazz guitarist and composer Bilal Karaman who blend modern harmonies with improvisations and his trio, MadenÖktemErsönmez, comprised of Sarp Maden, Alp Ersönmez and Volkan Öktem, who combine rock, drum'n bass, punk, noise, electronics and ambient music, Korhan Futacı & Kara Orkestra with their creative style that moves between jazz and rock music and the duo project of two talented jazz artists, bass player Kağan Yıldız and pianist Can Çankaya.

Another event included in the Showcase programme will be Night Out, a festival favourite. Some of the most exciting and alternative names of the independent scene such as Ceylan Ertem, Gevende, Son Feci Bisiklet, Jakuzi, Kolektif İstanbul, Özgün Semerci and No Land will give concerts in various venues in Kadıköy and Moda within the scope of the Night Out event. Also as part of the series, Yürüyen Merdiven ft. Tolga Bilgin & Kristian Lind, Geeva Flava and Rain Lab (İdil Meşe & Da Poet) will give concerts at Salon İKSV.

The detailed programme and the complete list of artists included in “ViTRin”: Showcase for Contemporary Music from Turkey will be announced in May. TWO SPECIAL PROJECTS IN ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL

“BEYOND THE MEMORY” A TRIBUTE TO PACO DE LUCIA ANTONIO SERRANO, CARLOS BENAVENT, JOSE MARI, NINO JOSELE, PIRAÑA, FARRU, DAVID DE JACOBA, LEVENT YÜKSEL, TAKSİM TRİO, CENK ERDOĞAN Saturday, 8 July, 21.30, Zorlu PSM Main Stage This night is homage to the cult guitarist and composer of Flamenco, Paco de Lucia, by iconic musicians like Antonio Serrano, Carlos Benavent, Jose Mari, Nino Josele and Piraña with whom the artist had collaborated in different stages of his career. Farru and David de Jacoba will join the company with their dance moves and vocals. Three names from Turkey who are all masters in their own fields are the precious ingredients of the tribute night exclusive to the 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival. Contributors from Turkey will include Levent Yüksel whose “Tuana”, a famous remake of a Paco de Lucia’s “Palenque”, earned him his stardom in the heydays of Turkish pop, the 90’s. Taksim Trio is one of the most spectacular bands of world music in recent years, which will be on stage to demonstrate the unusual harmony of clarinet, baghlama, qanun and Flamenco. Cenk Erdoğan, a rare maestro of fretless guitar in Turkey and composer of award-winning film scores, is also among the guests of this matchless night.

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE, JOSHUA REDMAN VE TRT BIG BAND 11 July Tue 21.00, Zorlu PSM Main Stage A landmark of jazz scene in Turkey, TRT Big Band and its conductor, recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achivement Award Kamil Özer, will meet with the master bassist Christian McBride and American saxophonist Joshua Redman, widely known for his own band aside from his creative collaborations. These sought after jazz geniuses, will join together with TRT Big Band for the first time at the 24th Istanbul Jazz Festival on this unmissable night.

24TH ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

“FESTIVAL AWARDS CEREMONY” FATİH ERKOÇ Tuesday, 4 July, 21.00, Austrian Cultural Office Garden The bewildering opening night of the festival at the Austrian Cultural Office Garden will witness the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards to two veteran jazzmen: the conductor of TRT Big Band, Kamil Özler, and a maestro of Turkish pop and jazz, Fatih Erkoç. Fatih Erkoç will mark the evening with his delightful jazz set, then leaving the stage to a surprise Australian band.

“TERRAMONDO” JACKY TERRASSON & STEPHANE BELMONDO CAN ÇANKAYA & KAĞAN YILDIZ Wednesday, 5 July 20.00, French Palace Garden One of the most praised members of Blue Note records, jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson will be joined by the French jazz trumpeter Stephane Belmondo on a mesmerising night where the glamour of classical jazz will shine bright. Terrasson is the esteemed winner of Thelonious Monk Piano Contest and an established artist with almost twenty jazz albums in his discography. Belmondo, on the other hand, is known with his applauded collaboration with the new age and jazz phenomenon Yusef Lateef. The duo’s thirty years of friendship has been crowned with their 2016 album Mother. With their romantic, warm and effortless music; ballads, jazz standards, chansons and a pinch of improvisation, they will leave the audience to the arms of nostalgia at the French Palace Garden. The opening of the night is by an act from Turkey. The new-born duo of contrabass player Kağan Yıldız whom most of the jazz followers are already familiar with from Kerem Görsev’s trio, and pianist Can Çankaya who took part in projects with numerous names of local jazz scene, will be on stage together.

KORHAN FUTACI AND KARA ORKESTRA // RAIN LAB* Wednesday, 5 July 22.00, Salon İKSV ViTRin’s focus of this night will be on Turkish composer and saxophonist Korhan Futacı and Kara Orkestra, as well as Rain Lab, the joint project of Da Poet and İdil Meşe. Having performed in Europe and the USA with her acoustic solo project, İdil Meşe gained widespread recognition after Acid Pauli has remixed a song that she originally wrote for Oceansvs Orientalis. Her partner Da Poet on the other hand, has been sharing the stage with artists like Gaslamp Killer, Chinese Man, Mount Kimbie, Araabmuzik, and Daedelus. The duo is specialised in trip-hop and hip-hop, and considered among the most successful names of the local scene in their own league. Gained recognition for his lyrics, compositions and saxophone performances on the albums of Tamburada and Dandadadan, Korhan Futacı took part in countless jazz festivals in Turkey and abroad. Having shared the stage with many international artists, Korhan Futacı and Kara Orkestra’s organic unity weaves a rich orchestral pattern like a high-intelligence machine. They offer intergalactic sonic experiences to their listeners. NIGHT OUT Thursday, 6 July, 19.00, Kadıköy, Moda The third edition of the festival’s music marathon night on the Asian side of the city will once again give the stage to the most promising independent artists of the local scene. This year, Ceylan Ertem, Gevende, Son Feci Bisiklet, Jakuzi, and Kolektif İstanbul will perform in the most favourite clubs and venues of Kadıköy and Moda; All Saints Moda Church, Club Quartier, Dorock XL, Kadıköy Sahne, KargART, Living Room, Moda Sahnesi, and Zor.

JUNUN FEATURING SHYE BEN TZUR AND THE RAJASTHAN EXPRESS / MILES MOSLEY / BİLAL KARAMAN TRIO / MADENÖKTEMERSÖNMEZ Friday, 7 July, 19.45, Beykoz Kundura

The founder of West Coast Get Down Collective, bass guitarist, vocalist and composer Miles Mosley is known as one of the driving forces behind Kamasi Washington’s success. Mosley will perform his latest solo album Uprising, in his way of envisioning the future of jazz. As, Junun takes over the stage with their spiritual and ambient sounds, the garden of this old shoe factory will be further mystified. A project by composer, poet and reviver of the spiritualist Sufi music tradition of Qawwal, Shye Ben Tzur, and the Indian band The Rajasthan Express, Junun has also been featured in a documentary directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The evening will be co-billed with two bands from Turkey, within the scope of the “Vitrin” Showcase: the trio of talented jazz guitarist and composer Bilal Karaman, and the dream team MadenÖktemErsönmez delivering their rock, drum’n bass, punk, noise and electronica infused sounds.

“JAZZ MATINÉE” YÜRÜYEN MERDİVEN FEAT. TOLGA BİLGİN & KRISTIAN LIND // GEEVA FLAVA Saturday, 8 July, 13.45, Salon İKSV In this day-time event of “ViTRin” Showcase, the stage will host Yürüyen Merdiven and Geeva Flava. Geeva Flava one of the finalists of last year’s Young Jazz series, will be the opening act of the session with their cheerful and dynamic performance. The joint project of Yiğit Özatalay and Mustafa Kemal Emirel: Yürüyen Merdiven (literally translating as “escalator”), will then be on stage, joined by Swedish contrabass player Kristian Lind and trumpeter Tolga Bilgin. The night will see the celebration the different characteristics of instruments from the melodic temperament of drums to the percussive sounds of piano.

“JAZZ IN THE PARKS” MASTRETTA // YOUNG JAZZ CONCERT Sunday, 9 July, 16.00, Fenerbahçe Khalkedon The classic outdoor event of the festival once again invites the residents of the city to a day of lying down on the green grass underneath the blue sky. The Young Jazz bands that will take the stage at this year’s festival will be announced after the evaluation concert on May 28. Following the performances of the selected Young Jazz bands, the Spanish band Mastretta will incite the audience to the pleasure of dancing until the closing of this beloved festival event. With Mediterranean tastes at its base, Mastretta will offer experimental voyages fuelled by rock music on this lovely Sunday afternoon.

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE’S NEW JAWN // KANDACE SPRINGS Monday, 10 July, 20.30, Sultan Park - Swissotel The Bosphorus The new discovery of Blue Note, Kandace Springs will be on the stage of Sultan Park on a warm summer night with her mesmerising vocals and amusing songs that bring soul, jazz and pop together. Taking inspiration from diva singers like Sade, Ella Fitzgerald, Lauryn Hill, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Erykah Badu, the young musician will be followed on stage by the new project of the American jazz bassist Christian McBride, New Jawn Quartet with their modern jazz explorations. Considered among the most productive of his generation of jazz musicians with over 300 records, McBride has proved his virtuosity with five Grammy awards he had received. Having collaborated with pop and rock stars like Sting, Paul McCartney and Celine Dion along with jazz masters like Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, and Chick Corea, McBride leads five different jazz ensembles including a Big Band with its 18 members.

“HAVANA NIGHT” ROBERTO FONSECA ABUC // DAYMÉ AROCENA Wednesday, 12 July, 20.30, Uniq Hall Open Air Stage This night dedicated to taking the musical heritage of Cuba into the future, will host Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca and the 23-year-old Cuban neo-soul vocalist, a discovery of Gilles Peterson, Daymé Arocena. Having toured the world with Buena Vista Social Club and gained worldwide recognition Fonseca will perform his latest release ABUC, which is considered as a comeback to the roots of Cuban music. Daymé Arocena’s powerful jazz and sould vocal technique will blend with Afro-Latin and Cuban sounds. Get ready to dance: A passionate ride to the magical atmosphere of Havana is awaiting you. FATOUMATA DIAWARA & HINDI ZAHRA Monday, 17 July, 21.00, The Grand Tarabya Panorama Terrace The hottest star of African music who has accompanied many artists on stage from Damon Albarn to Herbie Hancock, Fatumata Diawara will join forces with the Hindi Zahra, a unique whizz of blending jazz and world music. Happening under the duo’s ongoing project “Olympic Cafe Tour”, this night will bring together the power of two passionate female vocals.

DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER “MEMPHIS” Tuesday, 18 July, 21.00, The Marmara Esma Sultan Mansion Three-time Grammy winner and seven-time nominee, Dee Dee Bridgewater also holds a Tony Award for the musical The Wiz. Bridgewater visits the festival with her special project, which is a homage to the musical heritage of Memphis, where she was born. Having a solid fan base in Turkey, the artist will perform songs by the blues and soul maestros like BB King and Al Green. The audience will admire the jazz and soul diva at the unique atmosphere of Esma Sultan Mansion, right on the Bosphorus.

DONNY MCCASLIN Tuesday, 18 July, 22.30, Salon İKSV The American jazz saxophonist Donny McCaslin was an indispensable contributor to David Bowie’s final studio album, Blackstar. McCaslin performed songs by MUTEMATH, Deadmau5, The Chainsmokers and of course David Bowie in his 2016 album Beyond Now, which he has dedicated to Bowie and recorded with Tim Lefebvre, Mark Guiliana, Jason Lindner, Nate Wood and David Binney, whom were all other names behind the legendary Blackstar. The album was pinpointed among the best jazz albums of 2016. Having received the Grammy Award for Blackstar on behalf of David Bowie together with Ben Monder, Jason Lindner, Tim Lefebvre and Mark Guiliana at the beginning of this year, McCaslin has three Grammy nominations of his own. The supernatural McCaslin will give you the shivers with his experimental and uncanny style.

BOKANTÉ // BILL LAURANCE Wednesday, 19 July, 21.00, Beykoz Kundura The artists behind Snarky Puppy, incubator of jazz and electronic fusions, Bill Laurance will be at the peculiar garden of Beykoz Kundura along the Bosphorus. No other place could be more convenient for such a performance. The night will kick off with the performance of the keyboard player of Snarky Puppy, Bill Laurance, and move on with the brand new project of the founder and the bassist of the band, Michael League. A “weird combination of West African music, Delta blues, and Led Zeppelin” in League’s own words, Bokanté will draw new horizons for your ears.

ISFAR SARABSKI // BASEL RAJOUB SORIANA FEATURING SIROJIDDIN JURAEV Thursday, 20 July, 20.30, Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum The winner of the solo piano contest of 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival, the Azerbaijani pianist has consolidated his place in the jazz music scene with his collaborations. Having performed in magnificent concert halls from Royal Albert Hall to Queen Elizabeth Hall, Sarabski’s trio will now be joined by musicians from Turkey under the sponsorship of SOCAR Turkey. Presented in collaboration with Aga Khan Music Initiative (a programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture), Soriana is Rajoub’s homage to Syria’s musical knowledge and tradition through new inspirations.

A CHILDLIKE DAY AT THE FESTIVAL

The festival puts a smile on children’s faces this year. Children will discover their musical talents with concerts and workshops while having a blast on Saturday, 8 July at 15.00 at Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum.

World renowned clarinet virtuoso Oran Etkin is at the festival with a special concert in which he will tell the story of jazz instruments to children in an amusing way. Oran Etkin will be accompanied by Deniz Taşar on vocals, Riccardo Marenghi on drums, Ertan Şahin on tuba, and Barış Mert Peker on the piano. Children will enjoy the company of Oran Etkin who speaks to the ears and hearts of children just as good as his clarinet does throughout this workshop.

A 13-year-old pianist of remarkable talent, Hakan Başar (Jr) delivered his first concert in the 5th Pera Music Festival in 2015 and improved his musical potential at a faster pace each day. He recorded his first sample album at MIAM (Istanbul Technical University Center for Advanced Studies in Music). He drew even more attention last year with his participation in the Young Jazz competition of the festival. Ticket holders will be able to visit the Feyhaman Duran exhibition at Sakıp Sabancı Museum, and attend various workshops upon making reservation. In addition, Music for Peace Brass Ensemble will give a concert and lead a workshop on this day dedicated to children.

A WIDE RANGE OF JAZZ AT THE ZORLU PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE

Zorlu Performing Arts Centre will host Istanbul Jazz Festival artists as the venue sponsor with the highest contribution of İKSV. Among the concerts by many local and international names are Paco Du Lucia "Beyond The Memory" concert and Christian McBride, Joshua Redman and TRT Big Band.

TAKSİM TRİO Saturday, 8 July, 19.30, Zorlu PSM Drama Stage Taksim Trio features Hüsnü Şenlendirici, İsmail Tunçbilek and Aytaç Doğan, who are all in love with their instruments. Applauded for minutes at the world music fair of WOMEX in 2007, the trio took the stage at Queen Elizabeth Hall within the scope of London Jazz Festival the next year. Their second album that was released in 2013 featured their original compositions next to adaptations of songs by Orhan Gencebay, Zülfü Livaneli and Şükrü Tunar. Their third album Ahi came out in 2016. One of the most exciting names of world music with their musical richness, the trio is a living proof to the admirable harmony of clarinet, baghlama and qanun.

MEHMET ALİ SANLIKOL & WHATSNEXT? FEATURING TIGER OKOSHI Thursday, 13 July, 19.00, Zorlu PSM Drama Stage Jazz musician, composer and scholar Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol is making a comeback to the festival after 14 years, this time joined by jazz trumpeter Tiger Okoshi and his genre-bending ensemble Whatsnext?, for a night that will defy the boundaries between modern jazz and Turkish music. A true musical genius, the modern successor of mehter (janissary) and Ottoman music, and a Grammy nominee Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol will exhibit his musical wisdom, as proven by his peculiar recent release Resolution that saw the dazzling synthesis of New Orleans jazz and çifte telli (a solo Turkish folk dance). The eight piece ensemble will feature Tiger Okoshi, a respected jazz scholar known with his collaborations with jazz veterans like Gary Burton, Bruce Arnold, and Rakalam Bob Moses.

NIK BÄRTSCH’S RONIN Thursday, 13 July, 21.30, Zorlu PSM Drama Stage Swiss pianist, composer and producer Nik Bärtsch’s “zen funk” quartet Ronin wanders beyond the limits of classical jazz, crosses paths between contemporary and ethnic music and incorporates elements of blues with his distinctive musical language that he has achieved over the course of years.

KEREM GÖRSEV QUARTET Friday, 14 Jul, Fri 21.30, Zorlu PSM Drama Stage Celebrating the 50th anniversary of his first encounter with the piano, Kerem Görsev’s quartet featuring Ferit Odman, Kağan Yıldız and Engin Recepoğulları invites you to the retrospective of a successful career. Kerem Görsev’s passion for jazz burgeoned with his stepping foot into conservatory in the 60’s. Composing his first songs in the 90’s, Görsev became one of the most prominent pianists of the jazz scene in Turkey and continues to perform in Turkey and all around the world.

ANTONIO SANCHEZ & MIGRATION Friday, 14 July, 19.00, Zorlu PSM Drama Stage Jazz drummer of Mexican descent Antonio Sanchez is the name behind the original scores of the Oscar- winning film Birdman and is known with his collaborations with Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. Following the release of his latest album The Meridian Suite, this is Sanchez’s first visit to Istanbul. Four-time Grammy winner, Sanchez is seen among the most influential band leaders of today. Some film critics speculate that Birdman owes its Oscar to the music of Sanchez. Do not miss this performance that will prove the speculations right.

A JAZZ NIGHT WITH TUNA ÖTENEL AND HIS FRIENDS Wednesday, 26 April, 21.30, Salon İKSV In this special night that will witness the return of Tuna Ötenel to the stages after 10 years break, the jazz veteran will be accompanied by his friends Sibel Köse, Hakan Behlil, Neşet Ruacan, İmer Demirer, Murat Verdi, Can Kozlu, Hasan Kocamaz and Emin Fındıkoğlu. To be organised by Istanbul Jazz Festival under the musical direction of Emin Fındıkoğlu, the concert will be held on April 26 at Salon İKSV. The receiver of the festival’s “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2008, Tuna Ötenel has contributed immensely to the promotion of the knowledge and appreciation of jazz in Turkey since the 60’s. Tuna Ötenel was behind the piano and saxophone in the first ever jazz record of Turkey, Caz Semai, dated 1978 and featuring Kudret Öztoprak on guitars and Erol Pekcan on drums. Having had to take a break from music and the stages for 10 years due to his unfortunate health problems, Tuna Ötenel is recovered thanks to his passion for music. Now, he is back on stage with his Cornett, which he plays with a single hand, and with the support of his long-missed friends. The revenues of the concert will provide scholarships to young students of music.
