Semester 1 (08-18-14 thru 12-19-14)

Blue Days Periods (1, 3, 5, 7) Gold Days Periods (2, 4, 6, 8)

Health Science 1 is a year-long course of Medical Study which consists of basic anatomy, both the structure and function of the human body, as well as learning about various diseases that affect those systems. Medical Terminology is a very important part of the course, and will be used regularly throughout the year. In addition, you will apply concepts learned in Biology 1 to Health Science. You will study the cell, how it plays a key role in your body’s functions, and the chemicals which affect all functions.

The Agenda will be the specific day-to-day activities which reflect specific assignments, projects or class work that will be posted each day on the Smart Board and White Board in Class and the Lesson Plans which are available on the Boca Ciega Website. Please have your student look on the lesson plans online as this will be an excellent way to keep up on what is being taught and what quizzes or tests are coming up. Especially if you are absent for any length of time you will know exactly what course work needs to be made up. Periodically we will have guest speakers visit our class and speak about their level of expertise as it relates to the medical field.

Grading Policy:

A: 90-100

B: 80-89

C: 70-79 D: 60-69

F: 0-59

Medical Magnet students are expected to earn a grade of C or higher; students who receive a D or F must retake the course.

• Grading is done on a point system

• All Assignments (homework and in-class assignments) are worth 5-10 points each

• Quizzes are worth 20 points each

• All Tests are worth 100 points each

• Review Assignments will be assigned point values based on complexity

• Projects will be worth either 50 or 100 points based on complexity

• ***There is no set total number of points assigned per semester

Quizzes: I will do my best to notify students AT LEAST one week in advance of an upcoming quiz. An unexcused absence will result in an automatic 10% deduction from the quiz grade. Pop quizzes may be used whenever I feel one is needed (ex. When there have been multiple behavior issues, the class has not been attentive, etc.).

Tests: Students will be notified AT LEAST two weeks in advance of an upcoming test. Students will be given a study guide to complete with their peers during class and have the opportunity to ask any last questions. The next day that the class meets will be the exam. Bonus questions may or may not be given with the tests.

Projects/Papers: Students will be assigned projects/papers at my discretion.

Homework: It is likely that homework WILL NOT be given. If it is assigned, homework will be turned in as soon as the bell rings at the beginning of class the next day that the class meets unless otherwise stated. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you are absent on the day an assignment is supposed to be turned in, and it is excused, you will have one day for each day you were absent to make up your work. A 10% deduction will be applied to any assignment that is turned in after an unexcused absence. Assignments will be posted at www.bocaciega.org. No emailed work will be accepted unless previously arranged with me.

Extra Credit: Extra Credit opportunities might be available but are at my discretion. **Don’t let your grade get low enough that you need extra credit. Also, DO NOT ask for extra credit—you won’t get it.

Absences: It is the student’s responsibility to find out what he/she missed on days that they were absent and turn it in by the appropriate date. If you miss one class period, you have one class period to make it up; if you miss two class periods, you have two class periods to make it up, etc. I will also put the date that you will need to turn in your make-up work or take a make-up quiz/test in the grade book. NO WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED PAST THAT DUE DATE! All assignments and activities will be posted on www.bocaciega.org student lesson plans. All absences will be treated as unexcused when I am entering grades into the grade book until it shows as excused in the computer. It is the student’s responsibility to notify me if the absence is excused so that a letter grade is not dropped on any make-up work. Students have 48 hours to turn in an excuse note to the CWMP Secretary once they return to school. If a student is absent the day before a TEST, he/she will still be expected to take the TEST on the day they return to school. (A QUIZ will be treated as any other assignment). If the student is absent on the day a test or quiz is given, it will be the student’s responsibility to come to me to schedule a time to make it up. I WILL NOT COME TO YOU.

Class Rules & Teacher Expectations:

Being in the Medical Magnet program comes with high expectations and this class is no exception. It is the responsibility of the student to come to each class prepared and ready to learn and participate. You will be treated as adults and expected to act as such. Below, you will find an outline of the rules that will govern this class. • Be RESPECTFUL to Teacher AND Peers!!!
