Neal 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\rm\1369sd08.doc 11 12 Introduced in the House on March 5, 2008 13 Adopted by the House on March 5, 2008 14 15 Summary: Boy Scouts of America Troop 74 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 3/5/2008 House Introduced and adopted HJ-95 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 3/5/2008 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO CONGRATULATE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA TROOP 12 74, OF LANCASTER COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF THE 13 FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDING, AND TO 14 COMMEND THE TROOP AND ITS LEADERS FOR THEIR 15 MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE KERSHAW 16 COMMUNITY. 17 18 Whereas, Boy Scouts of America Troop 74, of Lancaster County, 19 recently celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its founding; and 20 21 Whereas, chartered on September 1, 1957, the troop reached its 22 fiftieth anniversary in September 2007 and celebrated this 23 important milestone as a troop on December 31, 2007; and 24 25 Whereas, in commemoration of the event, Troop 74 will have a 26 special recognition celebration on March 30, 2008, at Kershaw 27 Second Baptist Church, the troop’s sponsor since its initial charter; 28 and 29 30 Whereas, Troop 74 names among recent accomplishments its 31 qualification for the 2007 Centennial Quality Unit Award. In 32 addition, since 1965, which is as far back as the Palmetto 33 Council’s records go, the troop has had at least fifty-one members 34 achieve the elite status of Eagle Scout; and 35 36 Whereas, the troop has performed numerous service projects over 37 the years, most recently the renovation of the historic James 38 Ingram Cemetery in Heath Springs. Troop 74 cleared away dead 39 wood and brambles left in the wake of Hurricane Hugo and other 40 storms, cleaned and primed the cemetery’s wrought-iron fence, 41 repaired and set up broken tombstones, made headstones for four

1 [4810] 1 1 unmarked graves they discovered, and planted crepe myrtles on the 2 site; and 3 4 Whereas, for another favorite service project, in response to the 5 expressed desire of Kershaw Elementary School, the boys bought 6 statues of South Carolina’s state symbols and installed them in the 7 front of the school, created a garden there, and built picnic tables 8 for the area; and 9 10 Whereas, in accordance with the mission of the Boy Scouts of 11 America and to the end that these young men may become 12 responsible, participating citizens and leaders, Troop 74 and its 13 leaders work together to prepare members to make ethical and 14 moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values 15 of the Scout Oath and Law; and 16 17 Whereas, for nearly a century, the Boy Scouts have been 18 representative of all that is best in America’s youth. The House of 19 Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing the young men 20 of Troop 74, who since 1957 have shown themselves worthy to 21 bear the respected name of their organization in the Kershaw 22 community. Now, therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 25 26 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 27 by this resolution, congratulate Boy Scouts of America Troop 74, 28 of Lancaster County, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of 29 its founding, and commend the troop and its leaders for their many 30 years of service to the Kershaw community. 31 32 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 33 David Shores, scoutmaster, and Odell “Nick” Lucas, past 34 scoutmaster and current strong supporter of Troop 74. 35 ----XX---- 36
