Welcome to 4Th Grade Math! I Just Wanted to Let You Know What Our Procedures and My

Dear Parents, August 10, 2015

Welcome to 4th grade Math! I just wanted to let you know what our procedures and my expectations are for math this year. We use the Go Math series. The lesson for the day consists of 2 pages that are double sided. We do the first page (both sides) for our lesson. It is a teacher-guided lesson that the students interact with. I tell the students to put a star on this page so you will know we did this page together in class. We keep the pages in the big math book so you can use it to review and help them with their homework. I have told the children that they can bring the math book home for homework help, but they MUST bring it back the next day to school. We will use it daily and if they leave it at home they will not have their supplies for class. This will be a negative Dojo. If the book is lost or destroyed, they will have to purchase another copy. Please go over the lesson pages with them for extra help and support. The second page usually has a “Share and Show” section that the students do on their own and then we go over together and share our answers. The “On your own” sections is usually independent class work where they practice what they have learned that day. I will occasionally take grades on this section of the paper. In the Math section of the assignment book, your child should be copying down what lesson we did that day and the name of it. For example: Lesson 1.6 Adding Whole Numbers. Homework is from the student practice book. The assignment book will say HWp. P11 for ex. Expect your child to have math homework Monday-Thursday. There may be times we will have homework on Friday. So always check the assignment book. In addition to the workbook page for homework, your child should be memorizing and practicing multiplication and division facts. They MUST know these in order to build on a firm foundation! Flashcards are a great way for quick recall. We will be learning multi-digit multiplication and division soon and the quicker they are at recall the more successful they will be at multi-digits! You can get online and play math games and download lots of math APPS for fourth grade too! For Mid-Chapter Check and Tests, I expect the students to make corrections on the problems they missed. I give mini-lessons on each problem. They are given class time to make corrections after we go over the correct answers and work through problem areas. Corrections are counted as half credit toward their final grade for the test/quiz. I want them to be successful so that is why we make corrections. We learn from our mistakes! *****HOMEWORK HELP: Here are resources to help with homework. EACH lesson is on YOUTUBE. Go to youtube and type in the search: Go Math Lesson ___By Nina Nelson. In the blank put in the number of the Go math lesson. It is in the top right corner of the homework and they should have it in the assignment book too. This is a valuable tool and review. It will show you an exact lesson on how to do the math lesson and how your child was taught it during the day. Here is a website with more tutorials that go with each lesson as well: http://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/content/hsp/math/gomath2015/na/grk- 6/on_the_spot_videos_9780544251519_/index.html

Looking forward to a great year! Mrs. Hoskins [email protected]
