Class Overview: Course Description This course is continuation of Art 1115. Topics covered include, line variation, perspective, shading, still life, portrait, color mixing, and expression. Materials will be varied including, but not limited to: Acrylic paint, watercolor, tempera, and oil paint. Six lab hours per week. 3 semester hours credit. Repeatable 3 times.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Successful completers will: 1. Demonstrate skill in form order or the arrangement of elements in composition for painting. 2. Build a greater comprehension of spatial relationships employing the visual elements of line, shape, texture, and value in painting. 3. Examine and implement a variety of media commonly used for painting. 4. Develop a more personal system or aesthetic for painting. 5. Use effective, professional methods in presentation of painting.
Methods of Instruction Visual aids, demonstration and individualized instruction will guide the student.
Methods of Student Evaluation Grades will be given on projects, exams, and attendance.
Required Materials: Students will need an assortment or heavy body acrylic paints. Suggested colors include: Black, White, Magenta, Cyan Blue, yellow, Cad Red, Burnt Siena (Brown), Violet, Sap green, Cad Orange, Phalo blue, Phalo Green. Students will also need an assortment of brushes, with synthetic or natural hair. Plastic containers for water and mixing paint. Optional materials are Gesso for priming boards and canvas and Acrylic medium for mixing paint. Surfaces to paint on: Canvas on stretchers or canvas board or Cardboard or other board material to paint on. Other Materials provided. Pro tip: buy extra white for mixing. Also, old paintings from thrift stores can be repurposed. Classroom culture: High academic standards are to be maintained throughout the class. These standards include: student participation, thoughtful discussions, written components with collegiate level craft, timely completion of projects, and professional attitude. Participation in classroom critiques required. Students are expected to maintain personal hygiene. Official Attendance Policy: Students are to miss no more than 7 classes or automatic withdrawal or failure will occur.

1. Monochromatic color - on a 12 by 18 canvas design a Monochromatic (one) color painting with acrylics – 50 points 2. Still Life – bottles, objects, toys, and dolls– 50 points – set up a still life of toys, dolls, and bric-a-brac – paint it! Acrylic paints or oil paints 3. Landscape painting – painting of outdoors or building. – 50 points. Acrylic or watercolor 4. Portrait: Full body portrait. May use a photo as reference or may use a model. At least 18 by 24 if not larger– 50 points 5. Expressive abstract with text. This painting should have at least 3 layers – and some text. An exploration of expressionism and postmodernism. Must be large! – 50 points 6. Master Artist – Emulate the style of a master artist. – 100 points 7. Free choice – This is an open-ended project. Expand upon something we did this semester or try something new! This is your final exam of sorts. The purpose of this project is to explore size and duration in art. Must be comprehensive, well executed, and large – 100 points
