1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO CONGRATULATE THE RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH 12 SCHOOL’S MODEL UNITED NATIONS TEAM ON ITS 13 SEVENTEENTH CONSECUTIVE INTERNATIONAL FIRST 14 PLACE AWARD AT THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 15 MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE IN NEW YORK 16 CITY ON MARCH 21-26, 2006, AND TO HONOR THESE 17 DISTINGUISHED STUDENTS AND THEIR ADVISOR, LYNN 18 WASHINGTON, FOR THIS UNPRECEDENTED 19 ACCOMPLISHMENT. 20 21 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are 22 immensely pleased to once again have the opportunity to recognize 23 Richland Northeast High School for its superior performance and 24 unprecedented accomplishment in winning the National Model 25 United Nations International First Place Award of Distinction for 26 the seventeenth consecutive year; and 27 28 Whereas, this remarkable group of students participated in the 29 Model United Nations Conference in New York City March 21-26, 30 2006, and where more than 2,700 students participated from 31 throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Europe, and 32 Latin America; and 33 34 Whereas, the Richland Northeast delegation represented Iran in 35 this year’s mock deliberations and also won the Award of 36 Distinction for its research paper evaluating Iran’s policies and 37 presenting solutions in a variety of areas; and 38 39 Whereas, the students participate on the team on a strictly 40 voluntary basis and each student’s place on the team, which he or 41 she competes for, is based on his or her particular talent and 42 expertise; the Model United Nations emphasizes

1 [1387] 1 1 consensus-building and critical-thinking skills, and the students put 2 in countless hours of study and preparation; and 3 4 Whereas, this year’s distinguished team consisted of: Aileen Alon, 5 Marques Ardoin, Francine Berger, Hank Blume, Chelsey Boggs, 6 Leacy Burk, Hallie Carde, Caroline Corley, Sona Coshal, Emily 7 Dean, Julian Green, Miles Martin, Matt Meadows, Kate Nielson, 8 Elizabeth Prinz, Emily Robertson, Molly Sanders, Nikki Sareen, 9 Matt Scully, John Sumpter, Hayley Swinson, Danny Weinberg, 10 Lad Williamson, Lin Lin Zhao; and 11 12 Whereas, Lynn Washington, the team’s sponsor-advisor is a truly 13 remarkable and extraordinary individual whose dedication, tireless 14 efforts, and enthusiasm for guiding the students through this 15 demanding, but greatly rewarding, experience is unparalleled; and 16 17 Whereas, in addition to the Awards of Distinction for both 18 performance and research, two Richland Northeast High School 19 2003 graduates, Foard Copeland and Ryan Gassaway, were 20 selected by the International Model United Nations Board of 21 Directors to serve next year in the prestigious positions of 22 Secretary General and Director General, respectively, of the Model 23 United Nations; and 24 25 Whereas, it is proper and fitting that the members of the South 26 Carolina Senate pause in their deliberations to recognize such an 27 outstanding group of young people who have brought enormous 28 pride to Richland Northeast High School and to this great State 29 through their extraordinary performance at the National Model 30 United Nations Conference. Now, therefore, 31 32 Be it resolved by the Senate: 33 34 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 35 congratulate the Richland Northeast High School’s Model United 36 Nations Team on its seventeenth consecutive International First 37 Place Award of Distinction at the National High School Model 38 United Nations Conference in New York City March 21-26, 2006, 39 and honor these distinguished students and their advisor, Lynn 40 Washington, for this unprecedented accomplishment. 41
