EXTRACTOIN OF IRON

The important minerals of iron are Hematite (Fe2o3), Magnetite (Fe2o4) and Iron parities (Fes4) The ore of Iron is Hematite because it is found Abundantly on the earth crust, more over the percentage of iron is greater in Hematite than any other minerals. So Hematite is selected as ore of Iron. An ore is a mineral from which metal is commercially extracted

For the extraction of Iron first step is concentration of the Iron ore. Concentration of the ore is to remove earthly impurities, gang, stone etc. The method adapted for this is magnetic separation

EXTRACTION OF IRON

The process of separating Iron from Iron ore using Blast furnace. a long farness of about 30cm diameter made up of steel, and its inner layer lined bricks

The substance called charge, which is a mixture of Hematite, limestone, coke is putting through the cup and cone arrangement of the furnace which is at the top of furnace mean while a high temp of air is passed from the bottom to the top of the furnace.

STEP-1 The oxygen present in the air come is contact with the coke and forms carbon monoxide

2 C +O2 2CO + 2000K During this reaction a large amount of heat is librated and the temperature of the furnace will be about 2000k

STEP-2

The carbon monoxide come in contact with the ore Hematite and reduced to Iron. `

Fe2 O3 +Co 2Fe +Co2

The Iron produced in the furnace is in molten from due to high temperature the molten Iron poured in moulds and allowed to solidify it the Iron obtained from blast furnaces in called PIG IRON.

STEP-3

Use to high temperature the limestone discomposes to from calcium oxide and carbon dioxide this calcium oxide combines with sand (Sio2) present in the ore forms calcium silicate slag. The slag formed is presented above the PIG IRON and separated tab CaCo3 Cao+ Co2

cao +sio2 CaSio3 (slag)

The slag is used in the manufacture of road and cement. The air drawn from the furnace is used for roasting the ore
