HOSPITAL Joins 12,000 Californians for Annual Event Highlighting National Donate Life Month

Fullerton, Calif. – Saturday, April 26, 2014 − Hospital today emerged victorious as its __- member team crossed the finish line at the 12th annual Donate Life Run/Walk, the largest Donate Life- themed community event in the nation, to celebrate the gift of life and inspire Californians to be organ, eye, and tissue donors. The [hospital team] was one of 25 such teams from hospitals around Southern California who joined more than 5,000 donor family members to honor donors at the event. In all more than 12,000 people from around the country participated in the annual event. The Donate Life Run/Walk was a fitting conclusion to National Donate Life Month, a federally- authorized program that serves to bolster organ and tissue donor registries through the month of April. The morning Run/Walk featured local mayors, city council members and civic leaders who walked with the participants, and an opening ceremony that included emotional tributes and a dramatic release of doves by donor family members and transplant recipients. Hospital also joined other area transplant centers and local businesses to sponsor the Run/Walk. Proceeds from the event will support Donate Life California Organ & Tissue Donor Registry enrollment campaigns throughout the year. “We are so grateful to Hospital for participating this year,” noted Run/Walk founder Kathleen Hostert. “It’s because of organizations like Hospital that this event continues to grow exponentially and reach the far corners of our community.” According to ,. “Organ and tissue donation can save and improve lives right here in our community, throughout the state of California and across the nation. Hospital wanted to help drive that point home with our team, which appeared for the [first/second/etc.] time at this event. By encouraging others to sign up to be donors, we give hope to those in need of organ and tissue transplants while leaving a life-saving legacy for donors and their families.” - MORE- The highlight of the morning’s festivities for Hospital’s team was “It was an early morning for all of us, but one we’ll never forget,” said . “We’re looking forward to coming back next year with an even bigger group!” More than 21,000 California residents are waiting to receive life-saving hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys and other organs. However, there are not enough donors to meet the growing need in the state, let alone the country. In fact, 18 people die every day in the U.S. waiting for an organ transplant and the national waiting list currently hold more than 121,000 people.
