1) How do you know that the narrator does not take part I the events being narrated? We know because the story is written in third person omniscient, meaning the narrator is not in the story but knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters.

2) How would the story be different if one of the escaping African Americans in Harriet’s group told it? The tone of the story would change. Harriet gives a determined tone, but the slave might give a fearful tone. The story might lack Harriet’s background but include more of the slave’s thoughts, feelings, and background. 4. Third Person 1. African Americans all knew that Omniscient “Moses” was coming. 2. All eleven African Americans had been well fed. 1. Only one African Third Person American expected “Moses” to save them. Limited 2. Only Harriet Tubman was well fed and watered.

3. Analyze details that only a contemporary third-person narrator could know. Tubman successfully led two trips a year for 6 yrs. Her work ended with the Civil War. She would remain lifelong friends with Jarm Loguen.

5. What was your purpose for reading “Harriet Tubman”? The purpose was to learn about Harriet and get a better understanding of the Underground Railroad.

6. How does having a purpose help you focus your reading of the story? It helps students enjoy the reading, want to learn, and read actively.

7. What are three details that helped you achieve your purpose? We wanted to learn about her determination to lead other slaves to freedom. In addition, we learned about the pattern in which she lived her life to liberate the slaves and the skills and bravery she portrayed to complete this task.

8. What historical event caused Tubman to stop making the journeys she made in the 1850s? Explain why. Tubman stopped these journeys due to the start of the Civil War. Slavery was abolished.
