Course Outline: Mandarin 11

Introduction Mandarin 11 is a course for learners to further develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learners are expected to master the phonetic system, Hanyu Pinyin, of Mandarin, and speak Mandarin with correct pronunciation and intonation. This course will provide learners with communicative skills to enable learners to communicate with Mandarin speakers in real social environment.

The RosettaStone software will be used as the main tool to deliver the learning and practicing materials on line. RosettaStone 中文 Level 2 will be used for Mandarin 11. Supplementary teaching and practice materials will also be provided to help learners to enhance their learning. On line and face to face learning center hours are also provided to enable learners to ask questions or practice with the instructor as needed.

About the RosettaStone Software RosettaStone is an easy-to-use software for second language learners. It uses a communicative approach to create a real-life social environment in which learners can build their foundation of fundamental vocabulary and essential language structure, and develop the language skills to enjoy social interactions.

For first-time users, learners can simply log on as First-time user, navigate around and click Quick Start guide to adjust the computer hardware settings for the headset. Learners can also choose to turn on or off the “Speech recognition” function when learners want to want to check their own pronunciation in Mandarin. It is suggested that learners practice a few times to become familiar with navigating between the course screens and ways to answer questions before starting the course.

The organization of the course materials Mandarin 11 includes four thematic units. Each unit is divided into four core lessons that are in turn developed into various exercises and activities such as pronunciation, vocabulary, listening, reading, writing, and review. Learners can click any of these buttons to choose the activities to do. Activities are marked on line and can be reset. Learners can redo the same activity as needed. The “Milestone” button at the end of each lesson provides learners with a comprehensive review in oral form, which enables learners to review all the concepts and skills learned in the core lessons. In order to move to a new core lesson, learners are required to finish all the activities in order.

All the communication skills, listening, speaking reading and writing will be assessed in the above formats.
