Welcome Back Everyone! This year is sure to be a great one for everybody. This packet will give the basic guidelines for the 7th and 8th grade band at East Hamilton, and also include a calendar for the first semester. Students in these band classes should have had at least 1 year of middle school band, or attended the summer camp. Seventh and 8th grade band is different than beginning band- it is assumed that you know the basics of music reading and playing your instrument. If you are a new student to band, or to you band instrument, make sure you are practicing daily to keep up with the rest of class! Materials needed for every class a. INSTRUMENT (included: reeds and proper cleaning materials-see instrument checklist) b. Pencil c. Music binder with 10 pages of page protectors and a pencil pouch. d. Music and Method Books (will be distributed and are included in class fee) e. Agenda f. GOOD ATTITUDE AND WILLINGNESS TO PLAY! Fees:  $40 Fee for students who have a Band T-shirt and Polo  $30 Uniform Package (Band T-shirt $10 and Polo $20)  $25 Jazz Band Fee (includes Jazz band Tshirt)  Please try to have fees in by August 22nd with Contact Sheet and Binder Uniform:  All students in MS band will have uniform package which is part of their class fee. Students that have a polo shirt and T-shirt from last year may continue wearing it this year, as long as it is in good condition and Fits! Students will need to purchase a pair of black pants, black dress socks, and black dress shoes to wear with our polo shirts for band concerts. The first concert we will wear these polo’s at will be on December 12th , so please be prepared to have your materials by that time. Evaluation/Grading: Grading for this course will be made up of the following elements:  CLASS PARTICIPATON (50%): o This is a weekly participation grade that includes: being prepared for class every day, staying on task the entire class period and performing on one’s instrument the designated music.  Pass Offs (20%): o Students will be passing off weekly material either live in class or they will email me a recording through google classroom before the last class of the week. Students are responsible for knowing the material covered in class, and will need to practice this material outside of class to make sure they are prepared. New students to band or to their instrument: you will need to complete a practice log the first quarter of class so I can see that you are working on the right material needed for class.  Theory/Playing Tests (10%): o Theory Tests are ways for the teacher to make sure that you understand how music is written and how to take notes and symbols on the page and turn that into music you play on your instrument. Music theory will be a daily part of class at the beginning level and students should expect 1-2 theory tests a quarter. o Playing Tests are the way that the teacher can make sure you keeping up on your instrument at the same pace as everyone. Students will perform pre-assigned selections of music in groups, or make individual recordings of music to be evaluated by the teacher. These will be done at least once a quarter.  Concert Attendance (20%): o Students should expect to have one concert a quarter with one rehearsal day the day prior to the concert. Concerts dates will be given at the beginning of the quarter and attendance at these concerts are mandatory and for a grade.  Exams (10%): o Exam will be cumulative (go over everything learned) at the end of the quarter. For the first quarter this will be a theory review. The second quarter exam will go over some first quarter theory but also on the musical knowledge gained from the music you have practiced and performed in class.
