ROOTS OF RHYTHM WORLD DRUMMING TEACHER WORKSHOP 2006 LESSON PLAN FOR CHAPTER 7

Lesson Time Approximately 90 minutes

Goals and Objectives 1. Learn about the Lakota culture and heritage 2. Make a Lakota drum 3. Learn to play in the style of the Lakota Indians

Content Standards 1. Use one or more forms of art to promote a product or personal idea or view 2. Understand relationships between music, the other arts and disciplines outside the arts 3. Understand music in relation to history and culture 4. Identify how technology has affected the field of music 5. Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music 6. Discover how a group’s beliefs and values are reflected in its music

Materials 1. Roots of Rhythm book and CD 2. Roots of Rhythm Percussion Making Notes 3. Cardboard tube 9” X 2” 4. Chopsticks 5. Colored PVC tape 6. Feathers 7. Hacksaw 8. Transparency of dance rhythms found on page 50

Student Skill Level 1. Students must be able to hear and play changes in tempo 2. Students must be able to read and play nontraditional ways of writing music

Procedures 1. Show real Lakota drum and play.

2. Make a Lakota drum following directions in Percussion Instrument Making Notes.

3. Discuss flag, size and population, geography and culture, background and history, culture, instruments and rhythms found in book on page 45 to 47 while you are making the drum together.

4. Listen to CD #59 and discuss the heartbeat.

5. Learn to play the four Lakota Dance rhythms on our own Lakota drum. CD #60 to #64

Student Product 1. Students will have made their own Lakota drum. 2. Students will be able to play their drum in the style of the Lakota Indians.

Reflection This lesson evolves the student into making their own instrument that they learn how to play and will help them remember the Lakota Indians.
