DAIRY JUDGING & QUIZ BOWL OBJECTIVES Jenny Isham, Undergraduate Assistant Dairy/Extension Intern-Auburn University 7-22-16

1) Open to bona-fide 4-H members of Alabama who are enrolled for the Dairy Quiz Bowl Competition. Enrollment is to be done on the “Registration Form for 4-H Dairy Contests” and is to be recorded in the office of Boyd Brady, 109C Animal Science Bldg, Auburn University, AL 36849-5625; email, [email protected]; phone, 334-844-1562(o); 334-321- 8826(c ); or fax, 334-844-1519 at least two weeks prior to the contest.

2) Quiz Bowl is for teams that shall consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 members. Counties are encouraged to have a 4 person team.

3) For Seniors only one team per county or club, per age group is permitted. There is no limitation on teams from a county or club for juniors. Also, there is no limit to the number of individuals from a county that can participate in the Jr. contest. These individuals will be assigned a team on the day of the contest. Team members SHALL be designated at final registration of competitors at the contest site on the day of the contest.

4) A contestant should not wear any markings, clothing items or jewelry that reveals identity or area of residency. All forms of tobacco or illegal substances use are prohibited. The use of cell phones is prohibited. ANY violation of these rules are grounds for disqualification.

5) There will be one State Contest. This contest will be for seniors and juniors. Seniors & Juniors will be divided by age with contestants ages 9-13 (before January 1, of the year of the contest) competing as juniors and contestants 14-19 (before January 1, of the year of the contest) competing as seniors.

6) The winning senior team may travel and represent the state at an approved national contest. This contest must be approved by the State Extension Dairy Team. Some funds may be available to assist with this trip.

8) The Second Place team can represent Alabama at a regional contest but no funds will be provided and this must be approved by the State Extension Dairy Team.

9) For teams to participate they must be registered before two weeks prior to contest. Team coach must register team with Extension Dairy personnel. Coaches can register 3 or 4 team members.

Sr. Dairy (Cattle and Goats) Quiz Bowl Rules Jenny Isham, Undergraduate Assistant Dairy/Extension Intern-Auburn University 7-22-16

 Teams are seeded by a draw. Team names will be places on a piece of paper and placed in a cap. Team pairings will be drawn.  For teams to participate they must be registered before two weeks prior to contest. Team coach must register team with Extension Dairy personnel. Coaches can register 4 team members plus 2 alternates. Team can consist of 3 to 4 members from this list.

Each round consists of 10 toss-up and a possibility of 2 bonus questions.

 There will be NO multiple choice or True/False questions.  Coaches for each team are the official scores keepers, coaches will notify question reader when their team has qualified for a bonus question.  Correct answers are worth 10 points.  Anyone may buzz in to answer a toss-up question, and there will be no discussion among teammates.  Teams will have 5 seconds from the last word of the question being read to buzz in.  If any team member buzzes in and provides no answer 5 points are deducted.  If any team member buzzes in and provides an answer before he or she is recognized then 5 points will be deducted.  If a member of one team buzzes in yet provides an incorrect answer, the question will be reread for the members of the opposing team, and only members of that team will be eligible to answer.  The opposing team is not required to wait for the question to be reread before buzzing in. The team is allowed 5 seconds to buzz in after the opposing team answers incorrectly and the question is reread.

Bonus questions:  Coaches are responsible for notifying judges when bonuses should be given.  To receive a bonus each team member must answer a toss-up question correctly.  You will have 10 seconds from the last word of the question being read to buzz in and then a maximum of 10 seconds to say your answer.  Correct answers are also worth 10 points, yet incorrect answers to bonus questions bear no penalty.  For bonus questions, team members may talk amongst themselves and discuss the answer.  Each team must have a team captain who buzzes in with the teams’ answer. Note: ONLY the team captain may buzz in and give their collective answer.  The team that qualified for the bonus question is the only team that can receive points. If the team gives an incorrect answer the opposing team will not have an opportunity to receive any points.
