*RESEARCH PAPER* CLASS RESEARCH: Monday-Wednesday, October 22-24th DRAFT DUE: Monday, October 29th FINAL TYPED COPY DUE: Friday, November 2nd TRAVEL BROCHURE DUE: Monday, November 5th We are going to begin writing our research paper on a European country. You have randomly selected a country and must now complete research, write a rough draft and final copy, and create a brochure about this country. This assignment has 3 parts totaling 350 points. If you do not complete this assignment you will not be able to earn enough points to pass the 2nd nine weeks.

Research You are expected to write a 5-paragraph paper about the country you chose. Each paragraph should have topic sentences and at least 5 facts included. You may choose to include more than 5, but that is the minimum. This section is worth 100 points for successfully completing the research pages of this packet using at least 3 different sources: One encyclopedia, one regular book, and one Internet site. You may use as many sources are you feel are necessary to write the best paper possible. Your packet of notes and rough draft must be turned in with the final copy of your paper.

Paragraph 1= Introduction- You must hook the reader with this paragraph using interesting facts that you will not use later on in the paper. This is where your thesis statement is to be included. Paragraph 2= Physical features- In this paragraph you should include all major physical features (rivers, mountains, seas, etc.) and explain how these features have influenced the country. Remember you must have at least 5 things, you may include more than that. Paragraph 3= Art, Religion, & History- This is the paragraph where you talk about culture. Some countries have been shaped a lot by religion, others have been a basis for art, and all have unique history. Please be sure to include examples of all 3. Examples could include major wars, famous leaders, artists, or musicians. History is a good way to connect to your 4th paragraph. Paragraph 4= Customs & Economics- This is the paragraph where you should talk about the current state of the country. How do people live today? What type of money do they use? Are they part of European Union? If so, how has this affected them? If not, why aren’t they? Paragraph 5= Conclusion- This is where you wrap it up. This paragraph should include more interesting facts and restate the main ideas.

**While collecting your information be sure you are writing down where you are getting it. You must include a bibliography with your final paper (the sheet is included in this packet), and you must know your sources to complete this. Write down the book title, author, publisher and what year it was published, Internet website, title of story, encyclopedias, page numbers, etc. *** DO NOT PLAGIARIZE! This means do not copy a complete sentence from anything you use as a source. Everything needs to be in your own words. Research will be completed in school on October 22-24 in the school media center. Any additional research that is needed must be done at home, the public library, or before school hours with a pass. The rough draft is due: Monday, October 28th. The final copy with a rough draft and this packet is due: Friday, November 2nd and needs to be typed (if possible) using 12 pt font Times New Roman double-space. Students may ask for a pass to use the school computers before school as long as they get the pass the day before. Do not wait until the last minute as many teachers are doing similar assignments and computers are in high demand. Each paragraph in the rough draft is worth 20 pts. Late papers will have points deducted.

The Final paper and bibliography are worth 70 pts. Along with the final paper students need to create a travel brochure about their country including facts that are in their paper. The brochure is worth 80 pts. The brochure should be colorful and include facts from their paper. Brochures are due: Monday, November 5th.
