8Th Grade Science Class Syllabus

8th Grade Science Class Syllabus

What will I learn? Welcome to 8th grade science. 8th grade science is primarily an Earth Science course. We will spend the first week reviewing our safety guidelines for working in the lab. Next, we will review using equipment such as graduated cylinders, rulers/meter sticks, and triple beam balances as we learn more about length, mass, volume and density. We will work through the scientific process as well as learning about systems. Forms of energy and transfers of energy will be one of our main topics early on this year. During our astronomy unit, we will look at the Earth/Moon/Sun system (seasons, eclipses, moon phases) as well as their place in the solar system/galaxy/ and universe. You will also be learning about the Earth’s atmosphere, the interior/exterior of the Earth and ocean systems.

What will I need? Required items to make sure you are successful are: pencils, blue or black pen, a binder, paper and a composition book. Non-required items that might make things easier for you are: calculator, colored pencils, glue stick, highlighters, and a metric ruler.

How will I be graded? Your overall grade will be based on your assessment grades. Homework/classwork is your practice and will not be graded. It will, however, be checked and entered into the grade book as completed or not. You will have several assessments throughout the year. The expectation is that you score 80% or better on those assessments. If you do not score 80% or above then you are expected to retake the test after completing a proof of practice. The specific steps for doing this will be covered in class. If you pay attention in class, ask for help when needed and complete your assignments, then you will pass your assessments without retaking. There will be no extra credit offered for this class.

Please visit my website to see what we are learning each day. Proofs of practice will also be available to download if necessary.
