Looking Back: The Poupard family  February 18, 2014

The Poupard family farm was one of the most prosperous in the Grosse Pointes, presided over by Simon and Genevieve in the mid-1800s. It occupied the parcel of land near today’s Yorkshire and Bishop Roads in Grosse Pointe Park. Simon was one of the organizers of the first volunteer fire department in the area, which indicated high social standing. Charles A. Poupard is a descendent of this family. He served as treasurer for the board of education for 31 years, reportedly never missing a meeting, and was known for his kindness. Poupard Elementary School opened in 1951. Unfortunately, Charles died before he could be honored at the opening of the school. Genevieve is pictured with one of the farm horses.
