Characters from Greek Mythology in Art

For this assignment, you will select a character from Greek mythology, research his/her personality, roles and stories, and analyze two different pieces of art in which your character is a central figure. After completing your research, you will complete a 3-5 minute presentation to the class. Follow the steps below to complete your research, locate selected art, gather notes and prepare for your presentation.

1. Search for information about your character on the internet and in mythology books. Find out about his/her personality traits, roles and the symbols associated with him/her. Read a few stories in which your character plays a central role; 2. Take notes so that you will be able to introduce your character and share a few interesting anecdotes about his/her origins, roles and symbols; 3. Find two pieces of art (sculpture, vase paintings, paintings, tapestries, reliefs) that feature your character as a central figure. One piece of art should be from ancient Greekā€™s Classical period (approx 510 BCE-323 BCE) BCE) or Hellenistic period (approx. 323 BCE-146 or 31 BCE), and the other should be from a different time period, Renaissance to 21st century. a. analyze each piece of art: include information on the media, style, time period, the scene that is depicted, and the attitude that is conveyed and what is reflects about the subject and the values/beliefs of the time period; b. include brief biographical information about the artist, if known; c. compare the two pieces of art and how each portrays your character; use your understanding of the character and his/her roles in Greek mythology. 4. A formal MLA style bibliography is required. Keep a running list of sources used.
