VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Internship at The Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS) in Wilhelmshaven (Germany).

The CWSS is pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of internship positions for the fall of 2015.

Internship Title: Visibility and Appearance of the Wadden Sea World Heritage within the communication of municipalities, tourism organizations and other multipliers in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination (The internship encompasses qualitative research in at least one of the three countries of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination)

Duration: Internships of up to 3 months, which accompany vocational training or higher education of the intern, (starting date flexible, ending latest after 3 months). Primarily desk research, the intern is not necessarily required to work full-time from the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

Background The transnational project “PROWAD” funded by the EU via the INTERREG IVB North Sea Program, has identified and contributed to developing opportunities and perspectives for sustainable socio-economic development in the Danish-Dutch-German Wadden Sea region related to the designation of the Wadden Sea as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The World Heritage status as a powerful instrument, represented in a strong ‘Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination’ and the `World Heritage Brand`, will enable regional and local tourism brands to raise their profile nationally and internationally through a coherent communications and marketing strategy. Tourism organizations, regional and local governments and nature NGOs as well as private partners want to play an active role in the protection of the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) and in taking responsibility by buying into the brand.

Visibility and Appearance of the Wadden Sea World Heritage communication of municipalities and tourism organizations in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination

In 2007, a study was carried out to analyze how the National Park of Schleswig-Holstein was presented and advertised on the websites of the communities bordering the National Park. This was followed by further research in 2011 with an extended focus on how the presentation of the World Heritage status was included. The aim of the analysis was to find out whether and in what quantity and quality the National Park and the Wadden Sea World Heritage status were mentioned.

The new project in the course of the internship is a continuation of the former analysis with an extended focus on the Wadden Sea World Heritage destination and it´s 3 countries (Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands) and aims to contribute to achieving the following objectives:

 Describe the development and use of WS/WH brand based on the analysis 2007 and 2011.  Identify the recent WS/WH brand image and the brand evaluation attributes.  Consolidate how to strengthen the WS/WH brand future role as a marketing tool.

Learning opportunities for the intern  General understanding of the work and mission of the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat, the role of policy, nature conservation, science and administration, along with local stakeholders in protecting and conserving the Wadden Sea as an ecological entity through common policies and management;  Insight and hands-on experience in CWSS’s role in facilitating and promoting projects;  Insight and hands-on experience in engaging the public in the protection of the Wadden Sea through awareness-raising activities and environmental education; and  Familiarization with the workings of effective transboundary ecosystem-based collaboration in order to conserve a World Heritage site.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in nature protection, news media and social media.  Field of study: economics, international relations, anthropology, sociology, public or business administration, or environmental studies.  Language skills: written and spoken proficiency in English and at least in one of the “Wadden Sea Languages” (Danish, Dutch or German);  Good oral and written communications skills and demonstrated research abilities and interest  Internet proficiency as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.  Demonstrated interest in the field of brand management and marketing.

The CWSS does not provide financial support for interns. All successful applicants are expected to make their own arrangements for travel to Wilhelmshaven, lodging and living expenses during the three month internship period.
