TITLE: 3.MD.3 Our Favorite Lunch
Mathematical Goals Students will gather data and be able represent it in a graph of their choosing. Common Core Standards 3MD3-graphing Prior Knowledge Needed How to conduct a survey, Tally Marks, Pictographs and Bar Graphs. Vocabulary Survey, Data, Tally Marks, Bar Graph, Pictograph, Key, Sum, Difference, Compare, Contrast, Represent Materials Graph paper, pencils, clip boards, rulers, colored pencils, access to other classrooms, various graphing examples, poster board, various art materials.
Task: Your group is in charge of one food category; Main dish, veggie, fruit, side dish or dessert. Create a survey. Then survey your classmates and display the data.
Launch Time: 5-10 min.
The lunch ladies want to create a menu full of students’ favorite items. They have asked us to gather information so they can plan the menu. We will present this information to them at the end.
Divide students into 5 small groups and have them draw from a hat, the food category; main dish, veggie, fruit, side dish or dessert.
Explore Time: 30-45 min
Allow students to work together to create a survey.
Questions: How will you keep track of your data?
How will you track your results? How will you display your results?
Do you have any predictions?
Is there another way to show your results?
Debrief Time: 30-45 min
Students will present their findings in their groups to the whole class.
Questions: What worked well? Would you do anything differently? Why did you choose this graph? What conclusions did you come to?
Present your results to the lunch ladies.

What is the sum of the two most favorite items?
Make predictions about what other classes would vote for and then survey other classrooms.
Survey only teachers and compare and contrast that data with that of the students survey. Our amazing lunch ladies want to create a menu full of your favorite items. They have asked you to gather information so they can plan the menu. You will present this information to them at the end.
